Background / History

He Qi travels to Changzhao Reservoir with Sun Heng, Weng Nannan, and Cai Qi. Sun Heng and Weng Nannan intend the trip to bring him closer to Cai Qi, but He Qi is preoccupied with fishing. He initially resents the attention Cai Qi gives Fang Xian, then warms to Fang when Fang takes an interest in his plans 23 24 28.

Fang later recruits He Qi for a nighttime trip to the reservoir by promising both a large fish and dating advice. He Qi joins him in hunting the Human-Faced Fish, devises a way to track it, and helps pursue it after their first attempt fails. Fang handles the fighting while He Qi tracks and rows the boat 30 32 33.

Afterward, He Qi agrees to handle the fish’s sale and split the proceeds with Fang. He later tells Fang that Cai Qi is willing to give him a chance 35 41.

Personality

He Qi is enthusiastic and capable when fishing, but less assured around Cai Qi. His jealousy of Fang gives way to admiration: he trusts Fang’s claims about romance and follows him into the reservoir despite his fear. The Human-Faced Fish shocks him, yet he continues to help track it 23 30 32 33.
