| Established super-speed | 7 | Runs too quickly for ordinary pedestrians to perceive clearly, though Ryan can track and overtake him in flight. |
| Temporary Compound V enhancement | 37 38 | Ryan forces him to consume a dose and tests his speed on an empty highway. He runs faster than usual but cannot escape Ryan; prolonged exertion leaves him exhausted with a dangerously pounding heart. |

Background / History
A-Train began running as a child. He and his brother used to race beside the railway tracks from Brooks District to Brooklyn District, and he once dragged cars to train his powers. His brother watched him defeat successive opponents and earn his place in The Seven 41 43.
By the time Ryan encounters him, A-Train is a prominent Vought celebrity whose face appears on running-shoe advertisements. His career combines racing, endorsements, and membership in The Seven, making popularity and athletic success central to his livelihood 6 36 47 62.
Appearance
- Hair: Spiky hair 12.
- Everyday team attire: Frequently wears a blue jacket or blue tracksuit 12 20 61.
- Hero suit: A tight blue athletic suit, worn for his race against Shockwave 47.
- Eyewear: Black sunglasses or goggles; sometimes pushes the goggles onto his forehead 7 47 61.
Personality
A-Train is vain and preoccupied with his marketability. During a meeting intended to discuss heroic deeds, he requests a billboard reshoot because the photograph shows only “three-tenths” of how cool he is. He also hides his relationship with The Female to preserve his image as a single, athletic, desirable man 20 36 54.
His treatment of ordinary people is frequently callous. When he expects to collide with a child, he worries about ruined clothing and washing blood from his face rather than the victim. After killing Robin, he jokes about the incident in a recording and later berates Hughie for finding his apology inadequate. His manner improves sharply once he learns that Hughie knows Ryan 7 17 21.
Beneath his confidence, A-Train fears replacement and abandonment. He believes losing his position as the fastest would cost him admiration, The Female’s affection, and his brother’s approval. Although he shows genuine warmth toward his brother and sometimes protects The Female, self-preservation can override those attachments: he considers killing her when her disclosures threaten to draw Homelander’s anger 41 42 53.
Abilities & Skills
Super-Speed
- Moves faster than ordinary people can visually follow, often leaving only a gust of wind or an afterimage 7 42 48.
- Easily overtakes a moving train and reaches its destination ahead of it 43.
- Uses rapid repositioning in combat: after pretending to apologize to Starlight, he moves behind her, punches the back of her head, and escapes 22.
- Has practiced running technique; Ryan notices the quality of his starting stance, stride rhythm, and breathing during track training 41.
- Cannot fly. Even with Compound V, his ground speed does not allow him to escape Ryan’s aerial pursuit 38.
- Cannot always brake or change direction safely at speed, as demonstrated by the collision Ryan intercepts 7.
Enhanced Physique
- Survives being thrown into a building and impaled by a steel bar after colliding with Ryan, though the injuries require a lengthy hospital recovery 7 12.
- Is stronger than The Deep and can pin him to the conference table when Ryan requests assistance 57.
- Uses his physical abilities to evacuate injured teammates, including Translucent and Homelander 19 77.
Compound V Enhancement
- Uses additional Compound V to temporarily increase his existing powers 37 38.
- Knows several supply routes, including The Female, a storeroom linked to Supe Charity and Ezekiel, a transfer point behind a noodle shop, and a hospital outside the city 38 41 43 54.
- Cardiac strain: Repeated use leaves his heart struggling; both the highway run and the Shockwave race produce severe chest symptoms 37 38 49.
- Long-term decline: He recognizes that repeated use has reduced his unenhanced running speed, yet continues relying on the drug to compensate 42.
- Dependence on the shortcut: He dismisses further training as insufficient and argues that training chiefly improves control rather than raw power 42 43.
Relationships
- Ryan — Initially an enemy after their street collision, then a feared teammate and transactional ally. A-Train supplies information about Compound V, seeks Ryan’s protection for The Female, and later helps him while his powers are weakened 7 12 38 53 54 57.
- Hughie — A-Train kills Hughie’s girlfriend, Robin, making him the focus of Hughie’s anger and investigation. His reluctant apology becomes more accommodating only after Hughie identifies himself as Ryan’s friend 15 20 21 31.
- Robin — Killed when A-Train strikes her at super-speed. Vought’s legal team subsequently requires him to apologize to Hughie 20.
- The Female — His secret girlfriend, a star whose fame has faded, and a source of Compound V. He promises public recognition and marriage but retreats from commitment to protect his bachelor image. When she reveals sensitive information, he asks Ryan to secure Homelander’s forgiveness 36 37 53 54.
- His brother — An unnamed, supportive training partner who has followed his career since childhood. Their relationship becomes strained when A-Train rejects training in favor of Compound V 41 42 43.
- Shockwave — A younger rival threatening his place in The Seven. Shockwave is 0.3 seconds faster before A-Train uses Compound V to win their public race 38 42 47 48.
- Homelander — A feared team leader whose approval and power shape A-Train’s choices. Homelander supplies his race-day Compound V and later sends him to fetch more during the battle with Zod 12 47 53 77.
- Starlight — A teammate he sexually insults and then ambushes after she slaps him. Later, both assist Ryan against The Deep while Ryan is weakened 22 57.
- Billy — An investigator targeting his secrets. Billy poses as a fan and obtains A-Train’s autograph on a shoe to distract him during surveillance of The Female’s villa 36.
- Batman — A-Train expresses hostility toward him after the merger with the DC universe; the reason for their apparent grudge is not explained 154.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Introduction and Conflict with Ryan
- Ryan first recognizes A-Train through a shoe advertisement, then follows him through the city 6 7.
- When A-Train hurtles toward a frightened child, Ryan intercepts him. A-Train rebounds into a building and is impaled; Ryan’s clumsy attempt to free him worsens the wound 7.
- At Seven Tower, A-Train recognizes Ryan and objects to his recruitment. He also repeatedly warns him that occupying Homelander’s seat could provoke lethal retaliation 12 23.
- As Ryan establishes dominance over the team, A-Train shifts toward compliance, explaining Translucent’s durability and carrying him to the infirmary after Ryan’s attack 19.
Robin’s Death and Hughie’s Investigation
- Billy shows Hughie and Ryan footage of A-Train joking about killing a woman. The recording undermines his claim that he was pursuing a bank robber 17.
- Vought arranges an apology to Hughie. A-Train initially offers condolences, then portrays himself as the aggrieved party when Hughie remains dissatisfied. Ryan silences him with a smack 20 21.
- Hughie’s investigation turns toward A-Train’s secret relationship, hoping exposure will damage his reputation and value to Vought 31.
- Surveillance of The Female’s villa reveals his fear of Shockwave and his access to Compound V 36 37.
Compound V Dependence and the Shockwave Race
- Ryan intercepts A-Train with a hidden vial and forces him to demonstrate its effects. The resulting highway pursuit ends with A-Train exhausted and begging for his life; Ryan instead proposes cooperation to obtain more Compound V 37 38.
- Training with his brother confirms that his speed has declined. A-Train rejects continued practice, convinced that Compound V is his only reliable way to defeat Shockwave 41 42.
- He takes Ryan along an old railway route to a supply point behind a noodle shop, but the operation has no Compound V in stock 43.
- Homelander provides a race-day dose, which A-Train secretly injects. Before the start, he and Shockwave agree that the loser will have a leg sawed off 47 48.
- A-Train wins and tries to enforce the wager. Ryan intervenes and gets him to call it a joke; afterward, the drug’s physical cost leaves A-Train clutching his chest on the deserted track 48 49.
Dependence on Ryan and Later Events
- After The Female reveals information about the noodle-shop basement, A-Train asks Ryan to protect her from Homelander. He admits that he may otherwise kill her himself and offers information about a Compound V hospital in exchange for help 53 54.
- When Ryan returns to Seven Tower with weakened powers, A-Train offers sincere assistance and restrains The Deep on his orders. He subsequently locates Homelander and sends Ryan the location 57 58.
- Ryan increasingly uses him for practical errands, including collecting a dishwasher. Bystanders mistake the delivery run for a rescue mission 61.
- During Zod’s attack, A-Train carries the injured Homelander away and fetches Compound V. Zod steals and consumes the drug, gaining renewed strength before Ryan escapes through his Time-Space Instrument 77.
- After Ryan’s return and rise in public standing, A-Train remains at team meetings and bluntly remarks that the heroes are still working for money 124.
- Following the merger with the DC universe, he helps Ryan understand the changed world during a brief conversation 154.
