"Keep charging and it'll die! Stop!"

This time they understood. The Rat Tide slowed.

"Don't listen to it! Attack!" another voice rang out.

But Annan had already reached the Gargoyles. One snatched him up and took to the sky, speeding away.

The Elite Rats hurled spears into the air. Much like Martin spitting at the sky, they ended up killing a heap of their own.

Albeck fired several beams of Fel Energy. He didn't hit any of his own, instead shooting down the Gargoyles that weren't carrying Annan and the others with unnerving precision.

"This was my escape route all along, Albeck!" Annan's shout echoed through the night sky.

They had escaped the encirclement for now, but Annan kept his eyes fixed on the ratfolk camp. Only when they were far enough away that even the High Priest couldn't stop them did he breathe a sigh of relief.

On the ground, Albeck looked away.

The Rat Tide parted before him, revealing the Ratfolk Elder limping toward him in a sorry state.

It demanded loudly of the late-arriving Albeck, "Albeck, you let that demon thing get away!"

"My name is Traitor," Albeck said without expression. "You're the one who let Olmedo Just Right escape. I only came to clean up your mess."

"You'd better think of how to explain this to the High Priest."
