Annan strained to make out the words drifting toward him, but the wind swallowed too much of what was said.

"Can you hear what he's saying?"

He asked his grim-faced companions, but no one answered. Cupping his hands around his mouth, he shouted, "I can't hear you!"

The Knights' Order in the distance stirred, then suddenly broke formation.

“You made them angry,” Lilith said, who had also come up onto the City Wall.

“It's not as if they'd charge the City Wall...”

Before Annan could finish, the Knights' Order raised their lances and charged Star-Moon Bay.

A thunderous rumble sent flocks of birds into the air. They bore down on the City Wall with terrifying force. The recruits knew the impregnable City Wall protected them, yet they still trembled, unable to keep a firm grip on their weapons.

At that moment, no one doubted that the Knights' Order could ride down a Legendary fighter.

But when the Knights' Order came within roughly three hundred yards, the riders suddenly veered away to either side.

"If they knew you didn't even have bows, they'd have come closer."

Annan flushed. Preoccupied with firearms and Greater Elementals, he had chosen not to spend the long years needed to train archers. Still, the City Wall built against the Ratfolk would be hard for cavalry to breach.

The Knights' Order regrouped, then rode back the way they had come.

"Have they given up?" Annan asked.

"No... They're heading for the Wheat Field!" Ingrid clutched her notebook to her chest. "Annan, we could send fifty Greater Earth Elementals to stop them."

"No. They're trying to lure us out," the Guard Captain said. "We do nothing."

Annan was not so blindly confident that he thought himself better suited to command than the Guard Captain. Swallowing
