Gar's life changed a little.
While he worked at the docks or walked down the street, passersby would rush over to greet him.
It was much the same for the other Orcs. They suddenly found themselves treated with far more kindness.
All Orcs had benefited from When Freedom Knocks. Gar was later summoned by Annan, who said that quite a few Orcs might be coming soon. He told Gar to choose a few Orcs to quit their dockworker jobs and serve as Peacekeepers and guards.
The Basic Education Gar had received enabled him to do that, and the Magic Film meant he would no longer face discrimination—though of course some viewers disliked When Freedom Knocks. Plenty of people still hated and despised Orcs, but they were not going to travel thousands of miles to Free City just to spit at them.
Brook and Dag saw the biggest changes. When either walked down the street alone, people would call out, "Chris! Where's your son?" or "Christopher! Where's your father?"
When they walked together, people shouted, "Free City is a wonderful place!" and "Don't give up hope!"
Everyone called Brook Chris now, even the other Orcs. They had forgotten his real name.
Brook was beginning to understand what Lord Annan had meant when he said, "You really will become 'Chris.'" For now, at least, he enjoyed it.
Brook was a failure: thin, looked down on by his tribe, and not considered worthy of a mate.
Chris was a success. Everyone knew him, and wherever he went, people were kind to him. A Succubus had even invited him to her home, on the condition that Christopher came too.
Only Annan still called him Brook. "Brook, you're the face of Free City now."
