The intruder and the guardian were nowhere to be seen in the darkened night sky.
Annan hurried to the garden and found the Old Ancestor, still looking elderly, resting in her rocking chair as if the battle above Free City had had nothing to do with her.
But many people had seen that blazing beam rise from the City Lord's Mansion garden.
"You're so beautiful, I almost feel bad calling you Old Ancestor anymore."
The Old Ancestor opened her still-clouded eyes and asked kindly, "Then what would Little Annan like to call me?"
"How about Sister Eliyes?"
Eliyes Montreal was the Old Ancestor's name.
"Then what would you call little Olin? Niece Olin?"
"Great idea. She can call me little brother Annan, and I'll call her Niece Olin."
"Haha... I haven't been this happy in a long time." The Old Ancestor laughed until tears glimmered at the corners of her eyes. "But who upset our Little Annan?"
Annan felt no joy at seeing an enemy dealt with. "I'm worried about you... I didn't expect you to fight in person. Won't that make the curse worse?"
The Old Ancestor said gently, "I only used a little of the power I have left after the curse. It's nothing serious."
"Did they get away?" Annan glanced up at the night sky, bright again.
"One did."
That meant the Old Ancestor had stopped the other one for good.
So in those few dozen seconds, the Old Ancestor had killed a Legendary? Even though the curse had left her with so little power...
Annan hoped the one who had died was Agawar. They would have driven off an enemy and settled a grudge at the same time. A win on both counts.
"What are you thinking about?" the Old Ancestor suddenly asked
