Ch. 561The Rat Hunt
Plot points and events
- Lady Deepwinter refuses to leave despite losing her homeland and territory, but her Guard Captain wants to protect her. Annan intends to take the Expeditionary Army to Deepwinter Territory after settling affairs in the Old Royal Capital.
- The army establishes a base in the city, treats the plague, and begins clearing out ratfolk. Dean Breichim and Mr. Swaro have already eliminated the strongest rats, allowing the soldiers to fight with little danger. The army recaptures the eastern outer city, then the outer and Inner City; only the little Palace Garden remains in ratfolk hands.
- News of the recapture spreads across Middle Earth. Evelyn documents the campaign for Voice of Freedom, and the report boosts the Magic Newspaper’s popularity. Some Tartun Empire officials instead criticize Annan, arguing the city will be retaken and accusing him of ambitions against Montreal.
- Annan brings the rescued Princess Sails into the city and shelters her in the Underground Palace, away from the fighting. Three other survivors are found in the Dungeon, unconscious; Annan asks Mages to save them.
- Maria, a ratfolk agent who can pass as human, helps Annan by handing over ratfolk who want to resist the humans. She then leads the remaining rats north, enabling the Expeditionary Army to clear the city more quickly.
- Princess Sails reveals that the ratfolk drew her blood to study the Montreal Golden Family’s bloodline. Annan suspects they are plotting against the Tartun Empire and has Evelyn publicize the theory, adding that the ratfolk may have corrupted or bribed people within the Empire.
Character developments and interactions
- Annan combines military action with political messaging: he uses Maria’s offer to remove ratfolk opposition, cares for Princess Sails, and turns the Empire’s criticism into a possible warning about ratfolk infiltration.
- Princess Sails is physically frail after captivity but not tortured. Her bloodline was studied, and she helps Annan reason about the ratfolk’s possible aims.
- Maria shows pragmatic cooperation with Annan, trading hostile ratfolk for a chance to retreat with her followers.
- Evelyn is now an active war correspondent who appears hardened by the violence. She strongly resents critics who disparage soldiers from safety and agrees to report Annan’s warning.
- The Expeditionary Army’s varied groups—Rangers, Mages, Thieves, Warriors, and Bards—each contribute to the campaign, while the Empire’s divided officials reveal tensions around Annan’s growing influence.

- Political division and infiltration: The ratfolk may be targeting the Tartun Empire from within as well as through military force.
