Shen Bing watched nervously as the progress bar finally reached the end.

A window popped up: Novice Teleportation Talisman analyzed successfully. Quantum Transmission Technology acquired.

Shen Bing felt as if thunder had struck him.

What happened to the promised immortal realm? Analyzing a teleportation talisman should have yielded a way to make one. He could even have accepted an immortality technique like instant movement. But what the hell was Quantum Transmission Technology?

Shen Bing was a student at the University of Electronic Science and Technology, studying computer networking. He was no stranger to the word "quantum"; Huaxia had already launched a quantum satellite.

Quantum technology was the real deal, the future of human development. But didn't it feel out of place in the immortal realm?

Quantum Transmission Technology had made breakthroughs in certain laboratories, but it was nowhere near a mature technology.

Shen Bing rubbed his stomach. It hurt... and so did his liver.

Once the pain passed, only excitement remained. He desperately wanted this so-called Quantum Teleportation Technology. If he could actually bring it into the world...

Just thinking of the teleportation technology in the sci-fi epic Star Trek set his heart racing.

With the Gate to the Immortal Realm in his hands, he still saw no hope of becoming an immortal. Having some super-advanced technology at his disposal would be nice too.

To Shen Bing's delight, the Novice Teleportation Talisman was still sitting safely in that mysterious slot, with a multicolored orb of light beside it.

He dragged the talisman back into his Inventory, then tapped the orb. A small window appeared.

"Transfer Quantum Teleportation Technology? Note: The first technology transfer is free."

He tapped Confirm.

Suddenly, a roar went off in Shen Bing's head. It felt as though countless things had been crammed into his brain, swelling it until it ached.

"Hiss..." Shen Bing sucked in a sharp breath and fought to suppress the pain.

Curiosity killed the cat!

Four or five minutes passed before the pain finally vanished. Only then did he realize that sweat had soaked his back.

"Damn it! Why did it go straight into my brain?" Shen Bing grumbled inwardly. The Quantum Transmission Technology extracted from one little teleportation talisman had left him in this state. If he analyzed Sun Wukong's Seventy-Two Transformations next time, wouldn't he just drop dead?

Surely there was a rainbow after the storm?

Shen Bing began taking stock of his gains. Quantum Teleportation Technology was now in his head. His brain had to be the most valuable one in the world.

A moment later, he realized he had been too optimistic.

There was plenty of new knowledge in his head, but the strings of formulas, symbols, and explanations might as well have been written in an ancient script.

Shen Bing recognized some of the symbols. After all, he attended a top university and had survived high school, the most knowledge-packed period of a person's life. He vaguely remembered a few constants and variables from Microscopic Physics, but most of it was beyond him.

"What am I supposed to do with this?"

It felt like having a pig set down in front of him when he had no idea how to butcher it.

Seeing it right there but being unable to make use of it was maddening.

The material included a brief introduction to Quantum Teleportation Technology. A specialized device broke an object down into quantum particles, then used quantum effects over distance to transmit the properties of the original particles. At the destination, the particles were reassembled into the object.

The problem was that the extracted technology was a future development built on scientific foundations humanity had already established. Shen Bing would have to learn those foundations himself.

Shen Bing knew his limits. Even with all this information, he would probably be on his deathbed by the time he managed to develop Quantum Teleportation Technology.

Then he remembered something in the Treasure Pavilion: the Aperture-Opening Pill.

That miraculous pill could develop fifty percent of a person's Brain capacity. Supposedly, even Albert Einstein had used only around seven percent of his. If Shen Bing reached fifty percent, wouldn't that be incredible?

Wouldn't it be much easier then to learn the quantum theory humanity had already mastered?

Excited, Shen Bing opened the Treasure Pavilion and spent one Immortal Jade to buy the Aperture-Opening Pill.

After the purchase, the pill's price in the Treasure Pavilion changed to ten thousand Immortal Jade. It was painful to look at.

The Aperture-Opening Pill sat in his Inventory like a pearl, though it seemed to possess a vitality no pearl had.

I wonder if I can analyze the Aperture-Opening Pill. If I can, that would be incredible. I could mass-produce geniuses. My people would sweep every Nobel Prize. Shen Bing could not help feeling smug. He thought his chances were excellent.

He dragged it in and selected Analyze...

"Sorry, this item contains technology beyond the system's current level and cannot be fully analyzed. Forcing the analysis has a small chance of yielding incomplete technology."

Three buttons appeared below: Force Analysis, Cancel, and View Level-Up Requirements.

Shen Bing checked the level-up requirements first.

"Current Gate to the Immortal Realm level: 1. Complete five tasks to reach level 2."

Those requirements...

Shen Bing had a bad feeling. Five tasks did not sound like many, but it depended on what they were. If these were ordinary game quests, he would not blink at five, fifty, or even five hundred.

But the Gate to the Immortal Realm led to a real immortal realm. Shen Bing could already imagine how miserable doing errands for immortals would be.

Life was like getting screwed: if he couldn't fight back, he might as well enjoy it.

Shen Bing was not about to wait until the Gate to the Immortal Realm leveled up before analyzing the Aperture-Opening Pill. Who knew whether level two would be enough? The pill was extraordinary. If he forced an analysis now and got lucky, he might gain something, and the pill would still be there.

"Force analysis!"

"Force analysis of Aperture-Opening Pill successful. Basic Animal Intelligence Potion Formula acquired. Can improve an animal's intelligence to a certain extent. Warning: Not suitable for human use."

Shen Bing's mouth twitched. So much for my plan to create genius scientists. No matter how smart an animal gets, it can't become a scientist!

"Oh well. Better than a failed analysis!"

But he immediately regretted it. If only he had analyzed the Aperture-Opening Pill first instead of that damned Novice Teleportation Talisman.

There was no undoing it, though. He could only accept the result.

Shen Bing did not transfer the Aperture-Opening Pill right away. He did not dare take it yet.

Merely transferring technology had made his head hurt so badly he had almost passed out. Who knew what would happen when he swallowed the pill? Shen Bing did not want his troublemaking roommates hauling him to the hospital.

He then looked at the nine Immortal Jade left in the shop interface and winced. If only he could buy more...

"Damn! There's actually a Recharge button?" Shen Bing felt as though he had found the key to Pandora's box.

As if in a trance, he tapped Recharge.

"Insufficient account balance. Exchange rate: 1 Immortal Jade to 1 million Huaxia yuan." The system notice, highlighted in bright red, nearly blinded Shen Bing. It also killed his hopes of buying another Aperture-Opening Pill. What a rip-off.

But soon he grew smug again. He had effectively spent ten billion yuan just now! Who else could be so extravagant? Spending a fortune was nothing; he had practically thrown away dozens of tons of gold. Even if it had been discounted.

He also realized how poor he was. To make the most of the Gate to the Immortal Realm, he needed to earn a lot of money so he could buy its items. Without money, he could not buy an Aperture-Opening Pill—or even a teleportation talisman. At ten Immortal Jade each, those cost ten million yuan apiece.

"Where am I supposed to get that kind of money?" Shen Bing was troubled. His family was reasonably well-off, but his unreliable parents gave him only about a thousand yuan a month for living expenses. With prices as they were, it was just enough to get by.

The technology extracted through the Gate to the Immortal Realm was impressive, but his knowledge and bank balance were both painfully modest.

Take Quantum Teleportation Technology. Leaving aside whether he could build a device from the specifications, simply letting word get out that he possessed the technology would probably land him in serious trouble.

As for the Basic Animal Intelligence Potion, it did not seem particularly useful either.

"I'd better rent a place off campus. Otherwise, I really won't dare take that Aperture-Opening Pill."

Shen Bing was a man of action. He immediately went online to search for rental listings.

He had a little over four thousand yuan in his account: his living expenses for the semester, plus some savings. With that, he could only afford a single room or a shared apartment. Anything else in Rongcheng would eat up his money in little more than a month.

After making call after call, he finally found a promising place in Fengze Residential Community, over ten kilometers from the university. It was a three-bedroom apartment, but the landlord was willing to rent out the rooms separately.
