A handsome old man sat upright in his chair. His bearing commanded respect without anger, and his eyes, filled with the weight of years, searched the people in the hall as though looking for something.
People like them could be found everywhere in Huainan, where wind and clouds were gathering, and in Huaiyin City, where the Prince of Nankang Commandery held sway. Each had a past of their own, one that would have made them a legend in the martial world.
Now, however, every one of them seemed frozen in place, motionless as a clay statue.
Black and White qi wound around their bodies. Characters sprang forth one by one, joined together, and floated nearby.
"What are these characters? Why can't I read them?" Zhang Jingbei's eyes shifted over the dreamlike writing arrayed beside the others. Though he could not make out its meaning, an inexplicable feeling rose within him...
"Put together, these characters seem to form passages about these people's lives!" Langhao forced out the words, then struggled against the surging pressure to look toward the door.
"Who are those two?"
The moment the two figures outside stepped in, Zhang Jingbei and Langhao trembled inwardly. Their limbs grew heavier still, and even turning their heads became difficult.
When they made out the newcomers' appearances, their hearts lurched. Their vision blurred, and every color drained from the world except Black and White.
