Over the next while, Pan Long told Milton everything he had discovered during his infiltration, down to the smallest detail.
To back up his story, he took out several manuals he had found in the basement.
As Milton read the experimental records on the secret medicine and the notes on controlling Calamity, his face turned green, then red. At last, it darkened like a sky about to break into thunder and rain.
The manuals were clearly years old; forging them would not have been easy. Some of the events they described also matched things that had happened in Holy Salt Town, lending them still more credibility.
The manuals were evidence enough to prove Pan Long's account.
Milton drew several deep breaths before he finally calmed himself and asked, "What are you going to do?"
"There are two ways to solve this," Pan Long said. "The first is to counter each move as it comes and untangle the conflict. The second is to ignore all that and kill the people causing the problem."
He smiled faintly. "I'm not especially clever, and I have no influence. I doubt I could outwit those crafty old foxes move for move. So naturally, I'll take the second option."
Milton nodded. "Do you need our help?"
"No. Just take care of yourselves." Pan Long pushed open the door and walked out. As he went, he activated Stealth, and his figure gradually disappeared.
By the time Milton hurried after him, there was no trace of him.
A short while later, Pan Long arrived at the Sacred Prayer Hall.
It was heavily guarded. Every soldier had drawn his weapon, and their murderous air made it clear they were braced for a fight.
Pan Long ignored them, walked straight past, and entered the Prayer Hall.
He soon found an
