The best way to test it would be with something "one of a kind." But such things were rare in any world.

Take the world of Sword and Lament. Even Seles, leader of the One God Religion and one of the Empire's four legion commanders, did not wear a unique set of equipment. Several reclusive high priests of the One God Religion who appeared later all wore the same set.

Of course, by then Seles himself had changed into a higher-tier set of equipment, and that set did seem to be the only one in the game.
