The Classic of Mountains and Seas had little spiritual energy in reserve. He could not stay in this world for two months or longer, as he had in others, and there was not enough to exchange for any particularly valuable treasures.
So now that he had seen the spectacle, why stay?
He had come to travel and clear his head, never expecting to gain anything of value. Yet this trip to another world had already given him something precious beyond measure—worth far more than any treasure. Wanting more would be greedy.
As for the loose ends he was leaving in this world, he had already made arrangements.
In the Havens' house, he had hidden a cache of treasure in a large chest suspended from a roof beam. A charm of the Invisible Arts concealed it from the couple, but if the members of the Secret Histories Research Society searched his room, they would find it.
The treasure was worth a considerable sum. The cash alone amounted to more than a thousand pounds. Its most valuable piece, though, was half a treasure map.
The map marked a hoard he had put together over the past two days.
