As Ren achieved Union with the Dao, the path emerged beyond his control, and this was probably the only chance outsiders would ever have to understand an Immortal or Buddha's path in detail.
If he remembered it all and studied it slowly afterward, he might discover a similar path.
Ren Changsheng might have claimed that path as well, but given their friendship, surely it would not be hard to ask Ren to be generous and leave him a path he had no use for.
So long as he committed these words to memory, then worked hard to understand and develop them, he too would have some hope of becoming an Immortal or Buddha.
