Pan Long didn't remember ever encountering the Tianyou class back when he played the game.
But he knew Dungeons & Dragons was an enormous setting. The Forgotten Realms alone had dozens of novels and hundreds of games based on it, and even its sourcebooks would stack higher than a person.
So it was perfectly normal for this world to contain things he didn't know about.
Next, the local bishop of Ilmater's Church explained the Tianyou class to him in detail.
People like these were known as Warlocks.
Generally speaking, Warlocks could cast Arcane Magic, which originally belonged to wizards. But in a world this vast, there were bound to be exceptions. A tiny handful could cast Divine Magic, which originally belonged to Clerics.
Arcane Magic was easy enough to explain. Plenty of powerful creatures in the world possessed it, so it was hardly surprising that someone with their bloodline could cast a few Arcane spells. Divine Magic was stranger. Put simply, it came from gods, or at least from great beings on par with gods. In theory, only the descendants of such mighty figures could be born able to wield it.
As for Clerics or Druids... no matter how high their level, their Divine Magic wasn't theirs. There was no chance of passing it down!
Though no one had ever properly resolved the theoretical problem, people born with Divine Magic did exist. Gradually, someone designed a class that could make full use of their remarkable gift.
That class was Tianyou.
Like Warlocks, Tianyou casters relied on charisma rather than wisdom. They could learn relatively few spells, needed a slightly higher class level to cast spells on par with a Cleric's... and couldn't gain a Cleric's domain powers or spell-conversion ability.
None of that mattered to Pan Long.
He had only
