Pan Long flew fast. In moments, he had left the tiny Peach Blossom Paradise behind and crossed the churning black Great River.
The demon army north of the river had strength in numbers. Though it was a shambles, plenty of demons were watching the sky and saw him coming.
Demons knew nothing of warning shots. Five or six fireballs immediately flew toward him.
Their aim was hardly impressive. They had misjudged Pan Long's altitude, and even the highest fireball lost its force before reaching half his height. It traced a parabola through the air and fell back to earth.
The ones that landed in the river were harmless enough. One fireball struck the ground and exploded amid a crowd of demons, killing several on the spot. Somehow, they had handed Pan Long a fine opening.
It was as if the other side had kicked off by passing the ball straight into its own goal. Pan Long could not help bursting out laughing.

He deliberately dropped lower, much to the demons' delight. More fireballs, rays, poisonous smoke, missiles, and other spells came flying at him, thick as a rainstorm.
As for hitting their own side earlier... when had demons ever cared about that? To a demon, there was no such thing as a "comrade."
Chaotic evil meant selfishness and disorder taken to their extremes. Expecting these creatures to work together was hopeless. They would have a better chance if they chopped themselves down and started over.
In the blink of an eye, Pan Long plunged into the storm of spells below.
At the same moment, a wild wind rose.
It came so suddenly and fiercely that it swept away every spell without the
