"Your Highness, Nawan has returned." The old man before him wore a silver leather cap that marked his status: one of the Demon Realm's 109 Devil Kings. Or rather, one of its eighty-six surviving Devil Kings. In the Demon Realm's crushing defeat, twenty-three Devil Kings and six Great Devil Kings had died.
"The man you mentioned in your report—is that him?" The Devil King glanced at the cloud cocoon, now transparent. When the black clouds had swarmed over Luo Qian, a cloying scent had knocked him unconscious. He lay inside the cocoon as though hibernating.
The towering shadow was Nawan, a pawn the Demon Realm had planted in the Divine Realm. "Yes. I lay hidden near Divine Mountain for two months, and only one man with an Eastern face appeared." "Good."
"Your Highness, why not kill him and offer his entrails to the souls of our fallen?" Nawan had never agreed with his master, Devil King Sean, ordering the man taken alive. A barely perceptible cold glint crossed Sean's eyes, but Nawan, kneeling on the ground, did not notice. "You may go."
Even during the retreat, the Devil King's command tent remained lavishly furnished. Sean's domain lay in the Blood-Washed Plains Belt, the most fertile region of the Demon Realm. That he had carved out territory there, amid so many Great Devil Kings, spoke volumes about his methods and cunning.
The Demon Realm's army had been routed, but not by the Divine Realm's troops. It had fallen to those miraculous Magic Devices that descended like a tide blotting out the sky. Sean was not foolish enough to believe, as the other brutish Devil Kings did, that the things radiating strange light were simply "Magic Devices."
