Ch. 421Pools of Water and Fire Marshes
Key plot points and events
- Wang Jinhai learns that Tang Changsheng has access to Ghostwood and offers to investigate whether it can be used to make paper soldiers. Tang agrees and has his soldiers bring him some.
- Tang estimates that time passes more slowly in the Immortal Realm, so Marquis Wu may not yet have fallen—but crossing over now could still bring Tang into danger. He decides to remain in the modern world a little longer.
- Concerned that the Yin Soldier Camp Board may be too weak to secure the ruined City God Underworld Office, Tang decides to strengthen it by improving his troops. He plans to refine his assorted Ghost Creatures into Guardian Yin Soldiers, whose strength will reinforce the board.
- Tang realizes he can use the Yin and Yang formations on Yin-Yang Mountain as natural facilities for refining soldiers. He visits the Yin Pool in his Ghost Domain, where imported Seven Absolutions water has accumulated and grown deeper as yin qi continually condenses into liquid.
- To test the pool, Tang orders a subdued but unrefined Malicious Ghost into it. The ghost immediately screams as green smoke rises from its body.
Character development
- Tang continues to show patience and strategic foresight: he postpones returning to the Immortal Realm and prepares his forces before attempting to claim a dangerous, important site.
- He demonstrates resourcefulness by devising his own method of refining Yin Soldiers despite lacking formal knowledge of military formations or a sect inheritance.
Significant themes
- Preparation and power: Tang recognizes that controlling a dangerous place requires more than ambition; he must first strengthen his troops and magical tools.
- Improvisation: Rather than relying on specialized teachings he does not possess, Tang adapts the natural properties of his formation to solve the problem.
- The consequences of spiritual environments: The Yin Pool’s concentrated yin water can transform or harm beings placed in it, introducing the risks of Tang’s new refining method.
- Unequal time across worlds: Different rates of time shape Tang’s decisions and create uncertainty about events in the Immortal Realm.
Character interactions
- Wang Jinhai eagerly offers to study Ghostwood paper-making, and Tang responds warmly by supplying the material.
- Tang commands his Ghost soldiers to gather Ghostwood and later orders a Malicious Ghost into the Yin Pool as a test subject.
