As Black Dragon Bamas approached the Wizard Tower, another Primordial Black Dragon, identical to him, suddenly appeared outside it and faced him down.
It was just as enormous, with Scales as cold as black iron. Its horns swept back into a crown-like shape, and the same diagonal scar ran from its forehead across its face.
Looking at it was like looking at himself.
No. It was himself.
"Mirror Image." Black Dragon Bamas's deep voice bristled with rage. "Feeble, foolish Mage, do you think the great Black Dragon Bamas is some beast that knows nothing of Magic? You thought a mere Mirror Image could fool me?"
Granted, chromatic dragons were hardly masters of Magic. White Dragon were little better than beasts, and compared with the metallic dragons, many of whom were masters of the art, calling chromatic dragons magically inept was no exaggeration.
But as a Primordial Black Dragon, Bamas had probably seen more spells than most non-Legendary Mage Practitioners had ever cast. Of course he understood Magic.
To him, the Mage's attempt to scare him off with Mirror Image was an insult to his intelligence.
He flew faster, raised a sharp claw, and slashed down. At the same instant, the mirror dragon raised its own claw and struck.
Trying to scare me?
The black dragon scoffed and drove his claws into the mirror dragon's skull without hesitation.
His claws pierced its Scales. The familiar resistance of flesh startled him, and a sense of foreboding had barely risen before pain surged through his face.
Claws tore through the Scales on his face, and blood sprayed out. In a single exchange, a fresh scar had appeared across it.
The new scar crossed the old one, forming an X on Bamas's face. The already vicious-looking dragon now resembled one fresh out of prison.
