Ch. 21Steam (Please Bookmark and Recommend)
Chapter summary
- Jiang Hao asks about the Lord of Dawn’s divine punishment, hoping to prompt a useful exchange. Ieta Cavendish explains that the Lord of Dawn’s anger was triggered when a False God seized authority over the sun—an authority the Lord of Dawn had long coveted.
- The group discusses the Lord of Dawn’s origins. Ieta says the original sun god was Amanatar, who perished; Lathander was born from him and later died in the Dawn Calamity. The current Lord of Dawn and the Dusk God then arose from Lathander. Avram Krell compares this succession to the line of goddesses associated with magic and agrees that later gods are not simply the original gods under new names.
- Ieta says he knows only part of what followed, since the Lady of Night was involved. He reports that the Lord of Dawn issued an oracle, after which the Church of Dawn sent a force of five Legendary experts and a Demigod, called the “Light of All Worlds.”
- In exchange for Ieta’s answer, Jiang Hao offers him a clue to an authority he might claim: Steam.
Character developments and interactions
- Ieta reveals knowledge of divine history and his hostility toward the Lord of Dawn. Avram deduces that he is likely Ieta Cavendish, a descendant of Lathander and a mortal enemy of the present Lord of Dawn.
- Avram plays amateur detective, reasoning from Ieta’s age, knowledge, and animosity to infer his identity. He also helps explain the succession of the gods.
- Fiona Russell is surprised to learn that the Lord of Dawn is a New God rather than an unchanged primordial deity, exposing the gap between what she was taught and the truth.
- Jiang Hao remains composed and rewards Ieta’s account with the potentially valuable “Steam” clue.
Significant themes
- Divine succession and identity: Gods can perish and be replaced by beings born from them, challenging the idea that primordial gods simply persist unchanged.
- Hidden truths versus accepted belief: Fiona’s surprise highlights how religious and historical accounts can obscure divine history.
- Power, authority, and rivalry: The struggle over the sun’s authority drives the Lord of Dawn’s wrath and hints at the danger of claiming divine domains.
- Knowledge as exchange: Jiang Hao turns information into a trade, offering a clue that may shape Ieta’s future.
