In the screening room, Lu Mingfei wore a decent, well-fitted suit. He looked sharp and full of energy, nothing like the loser he had been a few months ago. He had even had his hair done, and looked almost respectable.
He had only just entered the screening room.
Today was the graduation party organized by the Literature Club, the club Lu Mingfei had joined in high school. Of course, it was also a confession party: Zhao Menghua was going to confess his feelings to club president Chen Wenwen.
"Lu Mingfei, I thought you weren't coming." Chen Wenwen spotted him and walked over with a smile, teasing him a little. "After all, you're off to study at a prestigious university in America."
"Hahaha, how could I not come when the president invited me herself?" Lu Mingfei rubbed the back of his head and smiled too.
"Need me to help with anything?" Lu Mingfei looked around and pointed at their classmates.
"Everyone seems pretty busy."
"No, no. Go over there." Chen Wenwen pointed. "The Literature Club members are there, along with Su Xiaoqiang and the others."
Lu Mingfei glanced over, and his face fell. "Come on, President. Why are they all girls?"
"I'm giving you a chance, and you don't even want it! Or are you planning to find an American girl once you get there?" Chen Wenwen widened her eyes at him. "That's a dangerous line of thinking!" Then she burst out laughing.
"Lu Mingfei, if you've got nothing to do, you can help me with something!" A male voice cut in, and a hand patted Lu Mingfei's shoulder.
Lu Mingfei looked at Zhao Menghua, brushed his hand away, and headed toward Su Xiaoqiang and the others.
"I'm going to have a Coke and some popcorn! Who said I've got nothing to do?"
Zhao Menghua's expression darkened. He glanced at Chen Wenwen. Remembering how she and Lu Mingfei had been laughing together made him uncomfortable.
"Lu Mingfei's changed so much these past two months. He's hardly the same person," Zhao Menghua said to Chen Wenwen.
"He has. But isn't the Lu Mingfei we have now pretty great too?" Chen Wenwen smiled. She remembered the afternoon a month ago when she and Lu Mingfei had stayed behind to clean, and what he had said to her. Her smile grew brighter.
"President Chen, why do you think I suddenly stopped liking you?"
"W-what did you say, Lu Mingfei?" Even now, Chen Wenwen remembered how she had stammered when she first heard him say it.
"Hahaha, you heard me right, President." He had smiled so brightly then, as though he had asked whether she had eaten, not told her he no longer liked her.
Seeing his smile, Chen Wenwen had suddenly calmed down. Looking back, it felt as though Lu Mingfei's mood had rubbed off on her.
In fact, Lu Mingfei had used his mental power to soothe her.
"So you confessed to me and then rejected me yourself? How dare you!"
"Haha, I'm heartless and unreasonable!" Lu Mingfei laughed happily. After seeing the record of his own fate and undergoing his transformation, he had suddenly learned to let some things go.
"You really have changed a lot, Lu Mingfei. Tell me, did aliens abduct you and alter you?" Chen Wenwen looked at him as though she were interrogating him. His transformation over the past month had turned his world upside down.
You're not far off, Lu Mingfei thought. But aliens didn't alter me. Someone from another world did.
"Come on, President. Did losing a little admirer go to your head? You believe in aliens now?"
"Your grades suddenly got better than mine. You talk more, you're nicer, and you even have an eight-pack! What else could it be but aliens?"
Chen Wenwen blushed when she mentioned his eight-pack. She and a few other girls from the Literature Club had discovered it while passing the basketball court.
I don't just have an eight-pack. I can turn into a dragon!
"Still, I really didn't expect you to tell me this all of a sudden. I was worried you might confess to me one day..."
"So everyone knew that you knew I liked you except me!" Lu Mingfei pulled a face.
"Haha, you're really fun now, Lu Mingfei. If you'd been like this from the start, I might have fallen for you."
Lu Mingfei shook his head like a rattle. "Please don't. Then I'd have to figure out how to turn you down without hurting your feelings."
"I can't talk to you anymore!" Chen Wenwen glared at him.
"It's almost dinnertime. Were you expecting me to skip dinner to keep chatting with you?" Lu Mingfei protested.
"Who wants to chat with you? You're taking out the trash today!" Chen Wenwen stormed out, deliberately making her footsteps thud.
But as she went down the stairs, her footsteps softened, and she smiled.
Lu Mingfei picked up the classroom trash and went out too, his steps light.
Lu Mingfei sat in the front row of the screening room and watched the confession unfold step by step, just as it had in the original story. The difference was that this time he watched from below the stage. Nobody asked him to go up and play a part.
Ever since some classmates had seen him pull off a feat straight out of a movie—taking on more than twenty thugs alone—fewer people dared even speak loudly to him.
Before long, Zhao Menghua confessed to Chen Wenwen, and she shyly accepted him. There was no melodramatic turn where Lu Mingfei's change of character made girls from every direction fall for him.
Watching the two of them hold hands, Lu Mingfei felt a little wistful. People really could change at the drop of a hat. The old him would probably have wanted to cry at the sight, but now he could watch without a pang and offer Chen Wenwen his sincere congratulations.
Of course, those congratulations were for Chen Wenwen. As for Zhao Menghua... well, that depended on his mood.
After this, I'll be saying goodbye to the world of ordinary people... Lu Mingfei looked around the room and toward the stage. Suddenly, he felt like a warrior carrying everything on his shoulders, walking on alone in silence.
Then a beam of light fell straight on him, as though lightning had broken through dark clouds and an angel had descended to the mortal world, his gaze sharp as a blade...
All right, it was nothing that dramatic. The newcomer wore sunglasses, so there was no telling whether his gaze was sharp as a blade or soft as spring water.
Lu Mingfei's eyes widened. He thought that fated moment had arrived, but when he saw who it was, he swore.
"Holy shit! B-B-Big Shot!"
Lu Mingfei was a mess. The girl he had once liked had gotten together with someone else today, and his heart had remained still as water. He had taken the wary looks directed at him all evening in stride too. But now, seeing the man in sunglasses who had pushed open the screening room doors, his heart was in turmoil.
"Lu Mingfei, is that a relative of yours? Your Big Shot? He looks younger than you to me. But he's handsome, and he's got such presence." Beside Lu Mingfei, Su Xiaoqiang whispered to him while sneaking sidelong glances at the man who had come in.
Su Xiaoqiang was not the only one. Everyone's eyes were drawn to the newcomer.
"Yeah, yeah. That's my B-Big Shot." Lu Mingfei stammered, accepting this new family tie with tears in his eyes.
Meng Chuan took off his sunglasses and looked at Lu Mingfei. His eyes were somewhat cold, and Su Xiaoqiang, who had been sneaking looks at him, immediately looked away.
With everyone watching, the man who seemed almost too intimidating to look at once his sunglasses were off said something that no one present except Lu Mingfei understood.
"They're all watching you."
