South of Nuoding City, Fasinuo Province, Douluo Continent.
Soul King Village.
A six-year-old boy with fiery red hair looked around in confusion. Beyond the puzzlement in his eyes was a spark far too keen for his age.
"Where am I? Wasn't I supposed to go back to Earth? This doesn't look like it..."
He was Huo Linfei, who had just defeated the Ghost King and was preparing to return to Blue Star.
As he stood there bewildered, an aged voice came from behind him. At the same moment, a wrinkled hand patted his shoulder.
"Little Mute, what are you thinking about? Time to go home and eat."
Huo Linfei turned to the old man, and memories that were not his own suddenly flooded his mind.
In an instant, he understood.
He had crossed into another world, one called Douluo Continent.
The boy whose body he now inhabited was an orphan. He had survived only because the old man before him had taken him in. But he had not spoken a word in years, which was how he had come to be called "Little Mute."
The old man was the chief of this village, Soul King Village. His name was Old Jero.
As for the village's name, it was said that a Soul King-level expert had come from here long ago, and the village had been named for him.
Huo Linfei had learned all this from the boy's memories.
Having inherited those memories, Huo Linfei also gained a basic understanding of this world.
But he felt no joy at all. His brows drew together, and a bitter taste filled his mouth.
He had finally cleared the Super Beast World, made it through the Seven Parallel Universes, defeated the Ghost King, and stood on the verge of returning to his old life. Yet in the blink of an eye, he had landed in another new world.
Old Jero seemed to notice his low spirits and asked with concern, "What's wrong? Are you worried about tomorrow's Martial Soul Awakening?"
"It'll be all right. Even if you awaken an ordinary Martial Soul and can't become a Soul Master, we can still live as ordinary people. A quiet, simple life is good too. I may not have made much of myself, but I've saved some money over the years. Even if I'm gone one day, it'll be enough to see you through to adulthood. So, child, don't worry too much."
"Okay. Thank you, Grandpa Jero."
Hearing those words, Huo Linfei felt an unexpected warmth in his chest. The reply slipped out before he knew it.
"Little Mute, you... you can talk?!"
Old Jero grew excited the moment he heard Huo Linfei speak.
"Yes, Grandpa Jero."
Huo Linfei nodded.
"Thank heavens. Now this old man can rest a little easier..."
Murmuring to himself, Old Jero took Huo Linfei back to their home in the village.
At the same time, in the Blacksmith Shop in Holy Soul Village...
A boy around Huo Linfei's age stared at everything before him in confusion.
Beside him, a weathered man drained the cheap ale from his wineskin. Seeing the boy standing there in a daze, he hurled the wineskin at him.
"What are you standing around for? Get back to hammering iron!"
The Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect.
"What's going on? Wasn't I ascending to the Divine Realm with my companions?"
A delicate little girl stared at herself in the mirror, her face full of questions.
In the Star Luo Empire, the Heaven Dou Empire, and several other places, similar scenes unfolded...
The next day, Old Jero brought Huo Linfei to Spirit Hall's branch at the center of the village.
Calling it a Spirit Hall branch was generous. It was only a shabby wooden hut about the size of an outhouse, though it was large enough for Spirit Hall's people to conduct the awakening ceremony.
After all, this village was no bigger than a fart and had few residents. There was no need to build a proper branch hall.
Old Jero led Huo Linfei to the hut. Besides several children his age, a tall young man stood there in a white Spirit Hall uniform.
"Master Su, sorry to trouble you again!"
Old Jero bowed slightly to the man he called Master Su and clasped his hands in greeting.
Su Yuntao gave a slight nod and said evenly:
"Let's make this quick. If everyone's here, we'll start now. I still have to visit another village for its awakenings afterward."
"Of course, Master Su."
Old Jero nodded repeatedly, then quickly arranged the children in a single line.
Including Huo Linfei, there were seven children in all.
Huo Linfei stood at the very back.
"Martial Soul Possession!"
Standing before the first child, Su Yuntao gave a low shout. The next moment, his body underwent a dramatic change.
His frame swelled, his muscles bulged, and wolfish features appeared on his body. Beneath his feet, two Soul Rings—one white, one yellow—flared to life.
So those are a Martial Soul and Soul Rings?
Huo Linfei watched with curiosity.
He found it wondrous. It bore a faint resemblance to the Super Beasts of the Super Beast World, yet it was also vastly different.
Soul Masters, huh?
Interesting.
"Martial Soul: water ladle. No Soul Power."
"Blue Silver Grass. No Soul Power."
"Spoon. No Soul Power."
"..."
The six children were tested in short order. Just as Su Yuntao had expected, they all had Trash Martial Souls and no Soul Power.
He sighed softly and looked toward Huo Linfei.
"Child, it's your turn."
"Okay."
Huo Linfei answered quietly, his expression calm.
Then he walked forward.
Unlike the other children, Huo Linfei showed neither fear nor nerves. His composure surprised Su Yuntao a little, but it did not give him much hope.
A child's early maturity could help him on the path of a Soul Master, but it had no bearing on his Martial Soul.
A child's Martial Soul would most likely be the same as one of his parents'.
As Huo Linfei stepped into the formation, golden light flashed. A familiar energy surged and churned within him...
The next second, thunderous roars rang across the sky!
The force of them stirred excitement in Su Yuntao, who had held out little hope.
Then a small figure appeared, scarlet from head to toe, with horns on its head and four crimson-gold claws. It seemed to stand amid flames.
The Martial Soul looked mysterious, but its puppy-sized body and harmless, adorable appearance did not match the power of its arrival.
Aside from the horns on its head, the flames that had covered it when it first appeared, and its scarlet mechanical skin, it looked much like a puppy.
At the sight of it, Su Yuntao's excitement faded at once.
Just some canine Beast Martial Soul he did not recognize. It did not look particularly strong.
Huo Linfei's reaction was entirely different.
The instant he saw the creature, his heart jolted. Then delight surged through him.
He knew that figure better than he knew himself. It was the companion who had fought beside him across the Seven Parallel Universes of the Super Beast World—the Phantom Qilin Beast.
No wonder the energy had felt familiar.
Even in his joy, Huo Linfei had never imagined he would see the Phantom Qilin here again, much less that it would become his Martial Soul.
With his old partner at his side, Huo Linfei felt even more confident about becoming a Soul Master.
"Let's test your Soul Power first." Seeing the delight on Huo Linfei's face, Su Yuntao frowned and sighed inwardly.
Huo Linfei gathered himself and placed his hand on the crystal ball Su Yuntao held out.
No sooner had he touched it than blue light swiftly filled the crystal ball, spilling out in a dazzling glow.
"Innate Full Soul Power? What a shame..."
Su Yuntao was startled, but when he thought of that unknown canine Martial Soul, which looked to have little offensive power, he shook his head inwardly.
Still, since he was already here, and the boy's Martial Soul was at least not Blue Silver Grass, he decided to extend an invitation.
"What's your name, little one? Would you like to join Spirit Hall?"
Huo Linfei looked at him and said slowly:
"My name is Huo Linfei..."
