Background / History

Formation and Settlement

Bei Mingyuan was born as a Kunpeng hatchling in the sea 250,000 years before the story. As he grew, mountains, rivers, stone forests, and other landscapes appeared on his back. During occasional flights in Peng form, he rescued humans and Soul Beasts and brought them aboard. These populations multiplied until a complete ecosystem formed 1.

The developing civilization eventually split into rival factions, with humans and Soul Beasts fighting one another. Fifty thousand years before the current story, Bei Mingyuan created a human avatar, subdued the factions with his Divine-Level Kunpeng Martial Soul, and founded the Northern Underworld Empire. Later sovereigns were his descendants 1.

Continental Exchanges

After unification, Bei Mingyuan largely withdrew into sleep while his true body continued drifting. The continent encountered Douluo, Heavenly Profound, Sun Moon, and other landmasses. His oracles encouraged contact and exchanges, while incoming Soul Masters and Soul Beasts brought knowledge of Soul Tool manufacture 1.

Repeated encounters with Sun Moon Continent included contests between their experts. The imperial court recalls winning the most recent contest, held five thousand years earlier 1.

Dragon Refuge and Poseidon’s Attack

Following the Dragon God’s fall, surviving dragon clans found shelter within the barrier surrounding Bei Mingyuan. Nearly every surviving True Dragon entered the continent, where the clans recovered, multiplied, and prepared for a future conflict with the Divine Realm 8.

Poseidon later attempted to seize the continent to increase his followers and strengthen his prospective Divine Position. Bei Mingyuan defeated him and warned him never to return. Bei Mingxue dates this attack to twenty thousand years before the current story and invokes it as the empire’s grievance against Sea God Island 12 15.

Government and Society

Imperial Rule

  • Bei Mingxue is the empire’s first empress and a Level 99 Limit Douluo. Apart from the founder, she is the only sovereign described as possessing the complete Kunpeng Martial Soul 1.
  • Communication with the Progenitor ordinarily requires a ruler with a Kun or Peng Martial Soul. Bei Mingxue’s complete Kunpeng Martial Soul allows her to hear his oracles clearly 1.
  • Administration includes human and Soul Beast officials, military leaders, academy heads, and representatives of clans and sects 1.
  • Diplomatic policy welcomes peaceful visitors and knowledge exchanges, while promising overwhelming retaliation against aggression 8.

Human–Soul Beast Coexistence

  • Soul Beasts capable of assuming human form hold important imperial positions; General Long Wei is a Black Demon Dragon King with 700,000 years of cultivation 1 6.
  • Humans and Soul Beasts marry and establish families across the species divide 1 8.
  • Soul Beast populations originate from Douluo Star’s four continents, secret realms, and scattered islands 8.
  • A Soul Ring tournament is held every five years. The search for suitable rings can delay advancement even for otherwise qualified cultivators 24.

Supernatural Systems

Divine Concealment

  • A special barrier around Bei Mingyuan blocks scrutiny from the Divine Realm and shelters the continent’s dragon populations 8.
  • Bei Mingyuan can still confront external divine observers: during the approach to Douluo, he crushes a spying divine gaze 12.

Underworld Cycle

Bei Mingyuan created a system that preserves cultivation resources while returning the dead to life.

  • Soul Masters and Soul Beasts meeting the stated thousand-year cultivation threshold leave Soul Rings after death. A receiving device stores these rings instead of allowing them to dissipate 8.
  • The dead enter a special Underworld-like space, where their memories are erased before reincarnation 8.
  • A soul may be reborn as either a human or a Soul Beast, regardless of its previous form 8.
  • Bei Mingyuan’s intervention sustains the cycle, making the continent function as a self-contained world apart from Douluo Star 8.

Soul Ring Processing

  • Bei Miao uses Kunpeng’s devouring power to fuse numerous Ten-Year Soul Rings into a Thousand-Year Soul Ring 23.
  • Collected rings can be converted into Demon-Sealing Cards for the Soul Spirit Tower, while the associated souls are sent into reincarnation 23.

Technology and Military

Soul Guidance Technology

  • Tens of thousands of years of development have made the empire’s Soul Tool technology exceptionally mature 1.
  • Soul Tools serve military, agricultural, transportation, and medical purposes 9.
  • Its research institutions provide alternatives for people with weak innate Soul Power: the Northern Nether Prince’s son, born with level-one innate Soul Power, becomes Qiu Beiling’s apprentice in Soul Tool Armor research 5.
  • Imperial warships possess turbocharging systems that accelerate the fleet’s advance 22.
Technology Documented Capability or Deployment
Ninth-generation Soul Guidance Energy-Gathering Cannon Three Soul Emperors can briefly charge it to produce a full-power Level 90 Titled Douluo strike and pierce a Soul Douluo’s Martial Soul Avatar. Its first deployment comprises one hundred cannons 5 9.
Level 9 Fixed Soul Guidance Cannon A shot can scorch land across dozens of kilometers. Bei Mingxue later orders increased workshop production 9 24.
Level 9 cannon arsenal The empire reports possessing 330 level-nine cannons 10.
Level 10 cannon Qiu Beiling claims these weapons can slay gods; this remains a stated capability rather than a demonstrated feat in the supplied chapters 9.
Light Spirit Detection Instrument A Level 9 analytical Soul Tool that nevertheless cannot obtain information about the Sky Screen 2.

Battle Armor

  • Bei Mingyuan develops One-Word and Two-Word Battle Armor; a few Three-Word Battle Armor Masters also emerge 17.
  • Four-Word Battle Armor depends on technology the empire cannot reproduce. Only five of Bei Mingyuan’s avatars possess such armor 17.
  • The five armor sets are stored in the imperial temple when not in use 17.
  • Bei Miao’s Black Rhinoceros Armor demonstrates the technology’s combat value by withstanding Xiao Bai’s attacks and supporting effortless underwater combat 20 21.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Sky Screen Connection

The Sky Curtain System connects Northern Underworld Continent and Douluo Continent, allowing qualified humans and intelligent Soul Beasts to communicate. Douluo’s major sects and Spirit Hall initially have no records of the moving continent 3.

Bei Mingyuan first orders silent observation. After the screen exposes the empire’s technological advances and powerful Soul Beasts, he authorizes public participation to investigate the system’s capabilities and hidden controller. Bei Mingxue and Long Wei then challenge Douluo’s assumptions about civilization, cultivation, and military power 4 5 6 7.

Approach to Douluo

Bei Mingxue announces that the continents will meet in three days. A divine vision and subsequent Sky Screen video reveal the Northern Underworld Continent moving through the ocean, provoking fears of a catastrophic collision 11 12 13.

Sea God Island loses contact with Poseidon and evacuates its residents. Despite the widespread fear, Bei Mingyuan explicitly states that he does not intend to destroy the island 15 16 17.

Sea God Island Campaign

Bei Mingxue appoints Long Wei to lead the vanguard, while Bei Mingyuan assigns Bei Miao to handle the campaign. He orders the Demon Soul Great White Sharks captured rather than killed so that they can enrich the continent’s wildlife 17 18.

Bei Miao defeats Xiao Bai and secures her tribe’s submission through a wager. His subsequent sea-cleaving attack opens a passage for the fleet, and he collects Soul Rings and Soul Bones for imperial use before ordering the advance to continue 20 21 23.

By Chapter 24, Bei Mingxue has mobilized further cannon production, and Bei Miao orders the fleet to fire on Sea God Hall. Bo Saixi remains behind and raises a barrier using the hall’s remaining divine power 24.
