Ch. 21Exposing the Fall of Sea God Island

Key plot points and events

  • Xiao Ran tells Qian Renxue that, after becoming the Angel God, she stopped pursuing Tang San so he could complete his trials and face her fairly. Meanwhile, Tang San killed the million-year Deep Sea Demonic Whale King—reportedly with Asura God’s help—absorbed its Soul Ring and Soul Bone, and returned to Sea God Island to begin his final trial.
  • During Tang San’s succession, the Sea God revealed Qian Renxue’s Angel Trials to Tang San and his companions, and other gods were able to interfere with her inheritance. Qian Renxue is horrified and furious, especially at the revelation that her trials were exposed for others to watch.
  • In the Divine Realm, Asura confronts the Sea God over meddling in another god’s succession. The Sea God backs down, and the two reach a cynical bargain over Tang San, while Asura agrees to act as though he knows nothing.
  • The Deep Sea Demonic Whale King learns of its future death and vows revenge against the gods. At Spirit Hall, Qian Daoliu realizes how badly the Angel lineage was treated and doubts whether sending Qian Renxue into the corrupt Divine Realm was wise.
  • Xiao Ran tries to comfort Qian Renxue by telling her that, ten thousand years later, the Whale King’s wife—the Demon Empress—will destroy Sea God Island and kill its inhabitants. He adds that Tang San later favored Shrek Academy over Sea God Island, reinforcing Xiao Ran’s view of Tang San as a hypocrite.

Character developments and interactions

  • Qian Renxue shifts from anger to deep hurt as she realizes how vulnerable and unsupported she was during her divine trials. She also questions why she ever allowed Tang San time to grow stronger.
  • Xiao Ran acts as the expositor and comforter, but his account is openly hostile toward Tang San and the Sea God.
  • Qian Daoliu loses confidence in the ideals of honor and fairness he once prized, recognizing that those principles left the Angel lineage open to exploitation.
  • The Sea God and Asura God reveal a self-serving, political relationship: they quarrel over interference in divine succession, then settle matters through a private compromise.
  • The Deep Sea Demonic Whale King becomes a future antagonist, transforming the news of its death into a vow to challenge the Divine Realm.

Significant themes

  • Fairness exploited as weakness: Qian Renxue’s insistence on an honorable contest contrasts with the gods’ willingness to manipulate events.
  • Hypocrisy and unequal standards: Xiao Ran condemns Tang San for benefiting from divine help while neglecting Sea God Island after gaining power.
  • Corruption and power politics: Even the Divine Realm’s officials appear to protect their interests rather than uphold justice.
  • Vulnerability and betrayal: Qian Renxue and Qian Daoliu confront the cost of trusting institutions that should have protected them.

Ch. 22Tang San’s Dire Predicament

Key plot points and events

  • The Sky Screen reveals that Tang San will abandon Sea God Island to protect Shrek Academy, leaving the island’s Sea Soul Masters and Demon Soul Great White Sharks to be slaughtered by the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King’s wife.
  • Bo Saixi, the Seven Sacred Pillar Douluo, and Xiao Bai turn against Tang San, horrified by the prophecy and questioning whether he deserves to inherit the Sea God’s power.
  • Tang San denies the accusation and calls Xiao Ran a liar. Ning Rongrong, Oscar, and Ma Hongjun defend him, citing his loyalty to Shrek and the opportunities he gave them.
  • Sea Dragon Douluo rebukes the Shrek members and accuses Tang San of favoring his own people over Sea God Island.
  • Bo Saixi calms the others, but demands that Tang San promise to protect Sea God Island’s believers after becoming the Sea God.
  • Tang San swears on his Blue Silver Emperor Martial Soul. He secretly exploits the wording, knowing he could still use his Clear Sky Hammer if the oath were broken.
  • The islanders accept the oath outwardly, but trust is damaged. Xiao Bai retreats into the sea, and Bo Saixi warns Tang San to prepare for the Sea God Nine Trials.

Character developments and interactions

  • Tang San presents himself as honorable but privately resents being challenged. His carefully limited oath and thoughts of future godhood expose his deceit and arrogance.
  • Bo Saixi struggles between her regard for Tang San as Tang Chen’s descendant and her doubts about his character. She maintains order while demanding accountability.
  • Xiao Bai reacts most emotionally to the threat against her clan and withdraws rather than accept Tang San’s assurances.
  • Ning Rongrong, Oscar, and Ma Hongjun stand by Tang San, revealing their loyalty to him; the Sea Pillar guardians dismiss their defense as biased.
  • The Sea Pillar Douluo and Sea God Island’s believers move from reverence toward suspicion, while Tang San’s relationship with them becomes strained.

Significant themes

  • Loyalty and favoritism: Tang San’s supposed choice between Shrek and Sea God Island raises questions about whom he truly serves.
  • Trust versus appearances: His public oath reassures the islanders, but his private intent undermines its sincerity.
  • Power and entitlement: Tang San’s imagined future status makes him feel entitled to respect, even as his conduct damages his standing.
  • The consequences of prophecy: The Sky Screen’s revelations reshape relationships before the predicted events occur, making Tang San’s trials more difficult.

Ch. 23The Entire Enshrinement Hall Died as Loyal Martyrs

  • Key events: Xiao Ran describes Spirit Hall’s defeat at Jialing Pass after Tang San becomes the Sea God. Tang San’s greater accumulated power, divine allies, and the Shrek Six Monsters turn the tide. He recounts the Worship Hall’s deaths: Jiang Mo and Qian Jun fall to the Hell White Tiger; Guang Ling and Lion die protecting Qian Renxue; Azure Luan is wounded by Xiao Wu and killed by her; Golden Crocodile sacrifices himself to save Qian Renxue; and Qian Daoliu’s fate is already known to her. Xiao Ran also reveals that Dugu Bo’s poison killed half a million Spirit Hall soldiers, devastating its army.
  • Character development: Qian Renxue is overwhelmed by grief and guilt, blaming herself for failing to kill Tang San sooner and believing her mistakes caused her elders’ deaths. In the future-facing events shown on the Sky Screen, the Worship Hall members respond to their predicted deaths with pride rather than fear. Qian Daoliu sees the revelations as a chance to change the future, while the others resolve to grow stronger.
  • Character interactions: Xiao Ran bluntly recounts the deaths to Qian Renxue, prompting her emotional collapse. At Spirit Hall, Golden Crocodile praises his brothers’ courage, while Azure Luan, Qian Jun, and Jiang Mo protest that their own predicted deaths were not sufficiently glorious. Qian Daoliu commends them, then orders the Soul Bones seized from the Clear Sky Sect distributed among them so they can prepare to fight Tang San.
  • Significant themes: The chapter emphasizes loyalty and sacrifice, the heavy cost of pride and failure, and the possibility of changing a foreseen fate. It also contrasts Qian Renxue’s remorse with the Worship Hall’s defiant solidarity, while stressing how preparation and accumulated strength can determine the outcome of war.

Ch. 24Ning Fengzhi’s Despair

  • Yu Xiaogang instead celebrates the poisoning as justified, dehumanizing Spirit Hall’s soldiers and urging Dugu Bo to view the mass killing as righteous. Dugu Bo is disturbed by Yu’s fanaticism and considers withdrawing from the world with Dugu Yan.

  • In the present, Ning Fengzhi is overwhelmed by these revelations, fears for the two elders who are currently with Tang San, and collapses after spitting blood.

Character developments

  • Qian Renxue shifts from horror and despair over the massacre to fierce satisfaction at Tang San’s eventual defeat, though Xiao Ran’s account of her allies’ losses darkens the conversation.
  • Dugu Bo confronts the future consequences of his actions and shows genuine moral distress, rejecting Yu Xiaogang’s attempt to excuse mass murder.
  • Yu Xiaogang reveals a fanatical hatred of Spirit Hall: he treats its soldiers as disposable and frames slaughter as righteous.

  • Bibi Dong is presented as both a formidable rival to Dugu Bo and the one who ultimately helps defeat Tang San.

Significant themes

  • Justification and dehumanization: Yu Xiaogang’s rhetoric shows how hatred can make cruelty seem virtuous.
  • Consequences and sacrifice: Dugu Bo’s future act destroys his lineage, while Tang San’s victory comes at an enormous cost to his supposed allies.
  • Betrayal and misplaced loyalty: Ning Fengzhi’s faith in Tang San is portrayed as a disastrous gamble that weakens his sect.

  • Xiao Ran explains the future to Qian Renxue, first frightening her with Dugu Bo’s massacre and then reassuring her with the news of Tang San’s defeat.
  • Yu Xiaogang pressures Dugu Bo to embrace the poisoning; Dugu Bo resists and is appalled by Yu’s willingness to deny the victims’ humanity.
  • Spirit Hall’s elders react collectively against Dugu Bo, while Bibi Dong asserts her superiority and threatens him.
