Background / History
Awakening and Academy Enrollment
Tang San awakens Blue Silver Grass under Su Yuntao’s supervision. After observing Lin Yuan’s unusual Fishing Rod, Tang Hao tells him to stay away from its owner. Tang San nevertheless approaches Lin Yuan at the riverbank and questions whether the rod is really an ordinary Martial Soul; the sight of its hook gives him an instinctive sense of danger 1.
By the following morning, Tang Hao has changed his instructions: Tang San is to stay close to Lin Yuan, watch him get into trouble, and learn from it. Tang San travels to the academy with Lin Yuan and Grandmaster. Flender welcomes him after confirming that his Blue Silver Grass is accompanied by Innate Full Soul Power 3.
Fishing with Lin Yuan
Tang San becomes a regular companion on Lin Yuan’s fishing trips. He helps prevent Lin Yuan from being pulled into Back Mountain Lake while landing a Thousand-Year Thunder-Patterned Silver Carp and warns him when lightning travels up the line 3.
His contributions extend beyond physical assistance. When Lin Yuan questions the rarity of the Ten-Year Seven-Colored Glazed Fish, Tang San suggests that species and bloodline purity matter more than age alone, drawing on Grandmaster’s lessons 5.
After several rare fish appear together, Tang San reasons that something in the lake’s depths may have driven them upward—or raised them. He proposes that an ancient creature could be surrounded by descendants with rare bloodlines. This prompts Lin Yuan to investigate the lake more seriously 6.
Tang San remains beside him during the prolonged attempt to catch the unknown creature, fetching a large bucket and grilling Crucian Carp while they wait. He later accompanies Lin Yuan to Mirror Image River and witnesses his bargain with the Thousand-Year Mirror Image Perch 7 10.
Elite Tournament
Flender selects Tang San for Shrek’s seven-member Elite Tournament team alongside Dai Mubai, Lin Yuan, Xiao Wu, Zhu Zhuqing, Oscar, and Ning Rongrong. Lin Yuan assigns him battlefield control, coordinating his Blue Silver Grass with Dai Mubai’s attacks and the Fishing Rod’s support 11.
Against Skywater Academy, Tang San spreads a Vine Net across the arena floor to resist the advancing ice. Once Shui Bing’er’s Soul Power dwindles, he expands his grass into a giant net as Shrek presses its attack 12.
In the final against Spirit Hall Academy, Demon Charm’s red mist corrodes his Blue Silver Grass and forces him onto the defensive. After Lin Yuan breaks Hu Liena and Xie Yue’s fusion, Tang San immediately binds Xie Yue’s feet, creating an opening for Dai Mubai. Shrek wins when Spirit Hall Academy concedes 13.
Xiao Wu’s Exposure and Escape
Before the awards ceremony, Lin Yuan warns Tang San that someone is preparing to act. Tang San follows his gaze toward Bibi Dong and becomes alert to the danger 13.
When Bibi Dong exposes Xiao Wu as a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soft Bone Rabbit and orders her capture, Tang San is the first to intervene. He raises a Blue Silver Grass barrier in front of her and refuses to let the Titled Douluo pass 14.
Lin Yuan’s prepared fishing-line formation delays Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo, allowing Tang San to wrap Xiao Wu in Blue Silver Grass and pull her back. Tang Hao then arrives, forces Bibi Dong to defend Pope’s Palace, and carries both Tang San and Xiao Wu away 14.
Personality
Tang San is inquisitive and analytical. He repeatedly questions how Lin Yuan’s Fishing Rod works, why he releases valuable catches, and how much Soul Power his techniques consume. His observations also produce useful deductions, particularly concerning rare fish bloodlines and the hidden creature beneath Back Mountain Lake 1 3 4 5 6.
He is more cautious than Lin Yuan, warning him about electrical attacks and asking what will happen if he catches something he cannot defeat. His patience is less developed: he grows restless during long waits and becomes impatient when Lin Yuan repeatedly releases apparent Mirror Image Perch catches 3 6 7 10.
Despite his reservations, Tang San continues helping Lin Yuan and eventually asks to learn fishing himself. Lin Yuan tells him that he must first learn to wait 12.
His protectiveness is clearest when Xiao Wu is threatened. Although the attackers are Titled Douluo, he immediately places himself between them and her 14.
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass
Tang San manifests Blue Silver Grass from his palm and directs it into vines, nets, and barriers 1 9 11 14.
- Binding: Sends dozens of vines along the ground to restrain an opponent’s legs 9.
- Net formation: Weaves grass into a net that catches Zhao Wuji during a coordinated training exercise 11.
- Area control: Spreads a Vine Net across the arena floor against Skywater Academy’s ice, then forms a larger net extending into the air 12.
- Protection and retrieval: Creates a barrier before Xiao Wu and later wraps her in grass to pull her away from danger 14.
- Limits: Zhao Wuji tears through his initial binding attempt. Demon Charm’s red mist withers and corrodes the grass, forcing him to withdraw it 9 13.
Coordinated Battlefield Control
Tang San uses restraints to create openings for teammates rather than relying solely on direct attacks 11 13.
- Follows Lin Yuan’s timing to bind Zhao Wuji’s left leg, then catches him in a grass net after Lin Yuan redirects his jump 11.
- Binds Xie Yue immediately after Demon Charm dissolves, enabling Dai Mubai to land a direct blow 13.
Soul Beast Knowledge and Observation
Tang San applies Grandmaster’s teachings when evaluating unfamiliar Soul Beasts 5.
- Distinguishes a creature’s age from the value of its species and bloodline 5.
- Infers that the concentration of rare fish in Back Mountain Lake may indicate a powerful, long-lived creature below 6.
- Notices that the fishing line hangs straight downward during Lin Yuan’s encounter with the unknown lake creature 7.
Relationships
- Tang Hao — Father. Initially tells Tang San to avoid Lin Yuan, then instructs him to follow and learn from him. Rescues Tang San and Xiao Wu from the arena 1 3 14.
- Lin Yuan — Fishing companion and combat teammate. Tang San helps land catches, questions his methods, and supports his investigations. Lin Yuan calls him “the dragon I’m trying to catch,” distinguishing him from the other people he compares to fish 3 5 6 11.
- Yu Xiaogang / Grandmaster — First teacher. Teaches him about Soul Beast value and bloodline purity, accompanies him to the academy, and prepares Shrek for the tournament final 2 3 5 13.
- Xiao Wu — Shrek teammate whom he protects after her Soul Beast identity is exposed. Tang Hao carries them both to safety 11 14.
- Dai Mubai — Teammate whose offensive role complements Tang San’s field control, particularly during training and the tournament final 11 13.
