At that moment, many children rushed into the hall from the courtyard at the other end. They screamed as they swept past like the wind. Victoria shouted, "Don't make a racket in public!" Only then did the children restrain themselves somewhat, though they had already run far away.
When the children and Sophie had both gone, Mei Sinan faced the enormous living room alone.
He was not actually the only person there, but when the male servants stood by in silence, they could almost perfectly blend into the background. He felt utterly out of place here. He wanted to get up and take a walk outside, yet it was as though some force pinned him to his chair.
His gaze searched everything beyond the window, yearning to catch a glimpse of Hesta's red hair or the hem of her clothes at any given moment. Though he felt that sitting here was merely a waste of time, he did not act rashly. Being forced to sit still somewhere for a while seemed like an opportunity too... So he quieted down and tried to adapt to this prolonged feeling of yearning without result.
Sophie's question—"Why did you have to follow us?"—swung through his heart like a pendulum. Sophie had merely been asking why he had insisted on coming to the farm, but what he truly ought to ask himself was why he had followed Hesta all the way to District 12.
