Background / History

Early life

Hesta was given her surname because of her fiery red hair. Though others associated the name with the Hesta Tribe, she initially did not know whether she was Hesta herself. She nevertheless knew details of the tribe’s traditions, having learned about them when red hair became highly sought after in Duanming Alley. Her mother also had naturally flame-red hair and concealed it by dyeing it dark brown. 2 6 47

She lived in Duanming Alley before entering Saint Anne Abbey. There, she formed a close bond with Boheng, with whom she shared food, information, and a desire to find someone important in her future. 2

A fire caused by a Chelated Being destroyed the abbey. Hesta survived, but Boheng disappeared during the incident. Chiba Masaki later offered her a place among the Quicksilver Needles after discovering Hesta’s natural resistance to Chelation Disease. 7

Reserve training and service

At the Reserve Training Base, Hesta was initially too small and underweight for intensive training; at 1.31 meters and 24 kilograms, she was instructed to improve her health before undertaking the standard regimen. 39

Her combat aptitude emerged before a completed Secondary Awakening. During specialized training, she held off two Chelated Beings bare-handed for nearly half an hour. Analysts concluded that her physiology allowed her to re-enter a smooth combat state whenever danger returned, without the usual Bullet Time restrictions. 72

Hesta later became an active Quicksilver Needle. She gained a reputation for high-risk operations, avoided ceremonies and promotions, and preferred to remain out of public attention despite her record. 109 116

Hesta identity and District 14

Hesta eventually encountered other Hesta people in District 14, including Eucali. Their meeting prompted Hesta to confront both her lack of a homeland and the dangers faced by visibly Hesta women. She helped Eucali escape exploitation and continued to support her afterward. 644 672 681 870

Hesta identifies herself as a Hesta person, but her relationship to the tribe is complicated by displacement. She has stated that she has never felt rooted in any particular place and can live anywhere without fully belonging there. 643 857
