Chapter 1258: Mask
A faint tremor came from deep within the building. Both Silei and Klar turned toward the main road at the same time, because the vibration felt like a heavily loaded truck passing beside the building.
But the main road was completely silent.
Then came a muffled blast.
Silei and Klar drew their guns almost simultaneously. Moving in perfect sync, they quickly leaped toward nearby cover and rolled into the building's shadow.
The explosion had come from directly beneath them, followed by the sounds of close combat and the sharp clangor of metal striking metal.
Klar's expression turned grave. "What's going on..."
"This doesn't sound like something ordinary people could cause." Silei quickly scanned the surroundings. "Maybe Zoe and the others are—who goes there!"
Silei suddenly raised her gun at a corner some distance away.
"Come out!" she barked. "Stop skulking around!"
Following Silei's gaze, Klar indeed spotted a vague black silhouette in the distance. It stood on the shadowed side of the building, almost blending into the darkness.
The figure stepped unhurriedly into the moonlight. The instant its face crossed the boundary between light and dark, Silei saw that the person wore a mask.
The patterns on the mask were especially clear beneath the moonlight. A five-petaled forget-me-not nearly covered its entire surface. Each petal had a hard texture that did not belong to a flower. On closer inspection, the two outermost petals seemed to have evolved from split crab claws.
At the flower's center, a sharp black anchorhead pierced upward through the heart of the bloom. There were many crescent-shaped gaps between the petals, as though five or six eyes had been scattered across it—and the person wearing the mask looked out through those gaps.
