Ch. 261Mu En's Death

Chapter Summary: “Mu En’s Death”

Key plot points and events

  • Lu Yi upgrades the Gate of the Undead’s casting speed, giving himself a reliable escape route before dangerous missions.
  • Zhou Sichen summons him urgently to Shrek Academy. Lu Yi realizes Mu En is near death and hurries to the Sea God Pavilion.
  • Mu En settles Shrek’s affairs, appointing leaders and addressing the Academy’s weaknesses. He reluctantly entrusts the Pavilion Master role to Xuan Zi, despite concern that Xuan Zi’s flaws and lack of discipline make him a poor choice.
  • Mu En asks Xu Sanshi and Jiang Nannan to join Bei Bei and help rebuild the Tang Sect. He also affirms Bei Bei’s stable Radiant Sacred Dragon bloodline and urges him to continue cultivating.
  • Mu En asks Lu Yi to join the Sea God Pavilion as an Elder. Lu Yi agrees, but requests to wait until he reaches Level 80. Mu En instead rules that Lu Yi may enter once he becomes a Soul Emperor, granting him an unusually early path to Elder status.
  • Mu En also decrees that Huo Yuhao will become Pavilion Master once he reaches Titled Douluo, at which point Xuan Zi should step down.
  • Mu En transforms into a white dragon and departs, sending a final wave of light over Sea God Island. Yan Shaozhe urges everyone to meditate and receive this last gift.
  • As Lu Yi absorbs the light, he wonders whether the changes caused by his presence have truly improved events. He then feels himself drawn back into the unfamiliar Sea of Consciousness.

Character developments

  • Lu Yi shows his usual caution by preparing an escape route, but Mu En’s death affects him deeply. He accepts a future role in Shrek’s leadership while remaining wary of the authority’s limits and the danger of becoming too prominent.
  • Mu En faces death with composure, using his final moments to guide the Academy, encourage the younger generation, and ensure Lu Yi’s position is secure.
  • Bei Bei is moved by Mu En’s personal affirmation and promises to uphold his family’s legacy while rebuilding the Tang Sect.
  • Xuan Zi inherits the Pavilion Master role reluctantly and is reminded, through Mu En’s reservations, that his personal shortcomings could threaten Shrek’s future.
  • Yan Shaozhe recognizes Lu Yi’s exceptional value, partly through the success of Lu Yi’s Potions, and understands why Mu En wants the Academy to accommodate him.
  • Wang Dong remains an enigma to Mu En, whose unease suggests that a hidden influence surrounds her.

Significant themes

  • Legacy and succession: Mu En’s death forces Shrek to confront the gap between its fading older generation and its still-maturing successors.
  • Power and influence: Lu Yi understands that formal status matters less than personal strength, even as Mu En grants him a powerful platform within the Academy.
  • Preparation and survival: Lu Yi’s escape plan reflects his preference for preparation over relying on improvisation.
  • Farewell and sacrifice: Mu En’s final transformation turns his death into a last act of generosity for Shrek.
  • Unintended consequences: Lu Yi questions whether his interference has improved events, hinting at the moral uncertainty of changing the course of history.

Character interactions

  • Lu Yi and Zhou Sichen: Zhou delivers the urgent summons and helps Lu Yi return to the Academy.
  • Lu Yi and Zhang Lexuan: She confirms the gravity of the situation and quietly sends him to Mu En.
  • Mu En and the Shrek Seven Monsters: He gives each guidance suited to their future, including requests for Xu Sanshi and Jiang Nannan, counsel for Bei Bei, and decisions concerning Wang Dong and Lu Yi.
  • Mu En and Lu Yi: Their respectful exchange culminates in Lu Yi accepting a future Elder position and Mu En easing his concerns about the commitment.
  • Yan Shaozhe and the gathered disciples: After Mu En’s departure, Yan Shaozhe frames the light over Sea God Island as Mu En’s final gift.

Ch. 262The Blue Silver Emperor Within the Golden Tree

Plot points and events

  • During Meditation, Lu Yi again enters the Golden Tree’s Sea of Consciousness and witnesses Mu En give himself almost entirely to the tree, leaving only a sleeping wisp of soul.
  • Lu Yi notices a dormant blue-and-silver vine cocoon—apparently Ah Yin—strengthen as Mu En merges with the tree. He suspects Ah Yin has begun taking it over and fears this is part of God King Tang’s plan. He considers opposing her but recognizes that doing so would mean challenging Tang San and his powerful allies.
  • Lu Yi wakes after three days. Yan Shaozhe tells him Mu En had arranged for him to become the youngest Elder in Sea God Pavilion history and offers future help securing Soul Beasts for his Soul Rings.
  • Lu Yi receives permission to pause practical combat training while he advances his research. He also informs Zhang Lexuan, who warns him to be careful with the Soul Spirit Ritual because it involves souls and the Sea of Consciousness.
  • Zhang Lexuan encourages Lu Yi to cultivate steadily rather than rush, using Xiao Hongchen as a cautionary example. Lu Yi privately notes that Xiao has recently become devoted to forging and has been supplying him with rare metals.
  • Back at the Ministry of Magic, Lu Yi plans the next three months: finish his Herbologist task, work on several other magical professions, and intensify his magic studies. After the herbs are ready, he intends to seek Evil Soul Masters for combat practice and to complete an Auror task.

Character developments and interactions

  • Lu Yi shows greater spiritual freedom and insight, but remains wary of the forces behind the Golden Tree. He balances ambition with practical planning and presents a confident, courteous face to Shrek’s leaders.
  • Yan Shaozhe treats Lu Yi more as an equal and recognizes Mu En’s decision as a way to secure Lu Yi’s bond with Shrek. His offer of future resources reflects the Academy’s desire to keep Lu Yi close.
  • Zhang Lexuan acts as a protective mentor, concerned about Lu Yi’s dangerous research and urging him not to sacrifice sound cultivation for speed. Her own history of opposing Xuan Zi’s reckless leadership underscores her belief that heroes should not be needlessly lost.
  • Xiao Hongchen is indirectly shown to be changing: instead of obsessing over rapid cultivation, he has immersed himself in forging, though Zhang Lexuan still fears the damage his weak foundations may cause.

Significant themes

  • Power and unequal foundations: Lu Yi doubts that anyone in the current era can realistically oppose Tang San and his long-established divine influence.
  • Loyalty and reciprocity: Yan Shaozhe realizes Lu Yi’s tendency to repay the Academy’s support could weaken his attachment to it; Mu En’s offer of an Elder’s seat may help bind them.
  • Responsible ambition: Zhang Lexuan warns that rapid gains can undermine a person’s future, while Lu Yi’s planned training and research show an effort to pursue growth methodically.
  • The cost of heroism: Zhang Lexuan’s experience informs her conviction that protecting people matters more than glorifying those who die.

Ch. 263Soul Beast Transformation's Inspiration! A Special Trial

Plot and events

  • Lu Yi tells Ning Tian, Zhou Sichen, Xiao Xiao, and Cao Jinxuan that he will be away for three months. He plans to intensify magic classes beforehand so the four can help coordinate and tutor in his absence.
  • Ning Tian, who has reached the level-fifty bottleneck at sixteen, asks for advice on her fifth Soul Ring. Lu Yi recommends waiting until level sixty or seventy before contracting a Soul Spirit, since his current ability to seal Soul Power is insufficient to make an earlier contract worthwhile.
  • Lu Yi considers asking Virtue Hall to develop a device for measuring mental strength, which could help Soul Masters judge how many Soul Spirits they can safely contract.
  • Ning Tian tentatively asks whether she can accompany him on his trip. Lu Yi declines to bring anyone, because he intends to practice Necromancy and wants to protect his companions and conceal his purpose. Ning Tian accepts his decision and agrees to keep the Ministry of Magic running.
  • On a later full-moon night, Lu Yi harvests a mature Mandrake from the Greenhouse. Its lethal cry is dangerous even through his ear protection, so he silences it immediately.
  • Lu Yi begins a demanding month-long trial: he must keep a Mandrake leaf in his mouth until the next full moon, without swallowing or dropping it. This is the first stage of a larger, risky procedure.
  • The trial is inspired by Lu Yi’s observation that Ah Yin, a transformed Plant-type Soul Beast, returned to Blue Silver Emperor form after sacrificing herself. Her apparent reversal of transformation leads him to wonder whether the process can be reversed in other ways.

Character developments and interactions

  • Lu Yi shows caution as a mentor, advising Ning Tian against rushing into a Soul Spirit contract. He also reveals his commitment to dangerous experimentation and to keeping his companions out of harm’s way.
  • Ning Tian demonstrates both ambition and responsibility: she wants to progress and travel with Lu Yi, but accepts his advice and prioritizes the Ministry’s needs. She is its principal organizer, despite Lu Yi formally leading it.
  • Xiao Xiao supports Ning Tian, urging Lu Yi to give her a proper vacation once the Ministry is established.
  • The group’s friendly exchanges underline their trust, while Lu Yi’s hesitation about Ning Tian’s request hints at their closeness and at the limits imposed by his secret mission.

Significant themes

  • Power gained through patience: Soul Spirits and Soul Rings require careful choices, especially when mental strength and compatibility are uncertain.
  • Responsibility and sacrifice: Ning Tian keeps the Ministry functioning; Lu Yi refuses to risk a companion on his dangerous mission.
  • Experimentation and risk: Lu Yi’s Mandrake trial reflects his willingness to test an unconventional theory despite the possibility of irreversible consequences.
  • Transformation and identity: Ah Yin’s return from human form to a Soul Beast-like state challenges the accepted idea that transformation is one-way and inspires Lu Yi’s central question about reversing the process.

Ch. 264The Animagus Trial

Key plot points and events

  • Lu Yi completes the first stage of the Animagus trial: after keeping a Mandrake leaf in his mouth for a month, he combines it with moonlit saliva, rare dew, a hair, and a Death’s-head Hawkmoth pupa, then buries the bottle to mature in darkness.
  • He begins the trial’s second stage, repeating a Wand-pointed incantation over his heart at sunrise and sunset. He must continue until he feels a second heartbeat, then wait for a thunderstorm before drinking the matured potion and embracing his animal transformation.
  • Lu Yi plans to summon a storm himself using his Thunderclap Infernal Vine Soul Spirit, avoiding the trial’s unpredictable wait.
  • His goal is to test whether Animagus transformation can interact with the Soul Master system and his Soul Spirit, potentially improving his physical abilities, senses, or cultivation. The result is unknown.
  • After a month of fasting, Lu Yi eats again and returns to his work. Ning Tian reports that two Ministry of Magic members have returned from Soul Hunting, having reached the level-fifty bottleneck. Lu Yi goes to award them the promised incentive: a Ten Thousand Year Soul Bone.

Character developments and interactions

  • Lu Yi shows patience, discipline, and willingness to risk an untested experiment. He views the Animagus trial as both a useful ability in its own right and a possible bridge between magic and Soul Master cultivation.
  • Bei Bei and Tang Ya see Lu Yi practicing at dawn and briefly wonder whether he is learning the Tang Sect’s Purple Demon Eye. They conclude it is one of his own magical practices. Tang Ya’s gratitude toward him is reinforced by the Ministry’s commercial partnership, which has helped the Tang Sect prosper.
  • Lu Yi’s companions are relieved when he resumes eating, though they do not know the trial’s full purpose.
  • The Ministry’s members are driven by a mix of career ambitions, newfound confidence in their combat abilities, and Lu Yi’s rewards. Their demanding routine combines academic study, magical training, Soul cultivation, and combat practice.
  • Ning Tian brings Lu Yi news of the returning Soul Hunters, prompting him to act on his promise and use the reward to encourage further progress.

Significant themes

  • Experimentation and uncertainty: Lu Yi is pursuing a path no one has tested, weighing speculative benefits against the unknown.
  • Discipline and endurance: The trial’s prolonged fasting and precisely timed daily practice demonstrate the cost of mastery.
  • Bridging systems: The chapter explores whether Wizarding magic, Animagus transformation, Soul Spirits, and Soul Master cultivation can complement one another.
  • Ambition and incentive: The Ministry’s training culture is shaped by personal aspirations and concrete rewards, with the Soul Bone intended to strengthen its future core members.

Ch. 265Cashing In the Reward! "A Family Tradition"

Key plot points and events

  • Lu Yi privately rewards two Ministry of Magic members who have recently reached Soul King before age twenty. He verifies their new ten-thousand-year fifth Soul Rings, then gives each a suitable Soul Bone.
  • He tells them to keep the bones discreet but let trusted people know that the Ministry fulfills its promises, reinforcing loyalty and encouraging others to grow stronger.
  • Zhou Sichen, Xiao Xiao, and Cao Jinxuan react with envy. Ning Tian reassures them that Lu Yi has exceptional Soul Bones set aside for his core companions, though only two are available for the three of them.
  • The group recalls that Dai Huabin was suspected of arranging an assassination attempt against Lu Yi years earlier. Zhou and Cao offer to deal with him someday, but Lu Yi dismisses the old grievance as unimportant.
  • Before leaving, Lu Yi teases the trio with the promise of top-quality Soul Bones, withholding the conditions for earning them.
  • Prompted by the mention of Dai Huabin, Lu Yi tests his Divination Crystal Ball. It shows Dai Huabin leading a large entourage to a brothel, where he goes upstairs alone. Lu Yi concludes that Dai has become a disappointment and may have been abandoned by his father.

Character developments and interactions

  • Lu Yi demonstrates both generosity and strategic leadership: he rewards achievement while using the gifts to build trust and motivate the Ministry. He also remains confident that Dai Huabin poses no threat.
  • The two new Soul Kings show strong loyalty, calling the Ministry their home and promising to help strengthen it.
  • Ning Tian reveals how deeply she has invested in Lu Yi’s future and connects that gamble to her sect’s painful history of backing the Tang Sect. She believes Lu Yi’s innovations could reshape the continent.
  • Zhou Sichen, Xiao Xiao, and Cao Jinxuan admire Lu Yi’s success and eagerly anticipate their own rewards. Zhou and Cao’s joking bravado also reveals their loyalty and anger over the past attack.
  • Lu Yi and Ning Tian share an easy, teasing rapport: she exposes his plans to the others, and he responds with playful resignation.

Significant themes

  • Loyalty built through fair rewards: Lu Yi’s generosity is also a deliberate way to earn confidence and commitment.
  • Investment and long-term vision: Ning Tian sees supporting Lu Yi as a strategic wager on technologies and professions that may transform the world.
  • Ambition and decline: The Ministry’s growing influence contrasts with the Tang Sect’s dependence and Dai Huabin’s apparent self-indulgence.
  • Family legacy: The chapter closes on Lu Yi’s suggestion that Dai Huabin’s behavior reflects a recurring family pattern.

Ch. 266"Box Weapon"! Ghost Nana

Key plot points and events

  • Lu Yi plans to use the Divination Crystal Ball to locate a Holy Spirit Cult branch, then destroy it while practicing Necromancy. He recalls that a Sun Moon Academy student named Nana was once controlled by the cult.
  • Using a Pensieve to examine his own memories, Lu Yi learns Nana is a seventeen-year-old sixth-year student, a Soul King with a Ghost Martial Soul, and a prospective member of the Sun Moon Team. The cult targeted her for her talent and natural affinity with souls, then used her parents’ imprisoned spirits to control her.
  • Lu Yi learns that Nana’s branch is led by a Soul Saint, with Soul Emperors as its other core members. He believes Necromancy should overwhelm their inferior soul-based methods, though his lightning-affinity spirit is also well suited to fighting them.
  • Lu Yi uses the crystal ball to view Huo Yuhao’s next encounter with Nana. He identifies her among the students they pass, but the vision ends before Huo reaches his destination. The crystal ball then becomes unusable for three months.
  • As evening falls, Lu Yi continues practicing the Animagus ritual. At the forge, he finds Xiao Hongchen celebrating his first successful Thousand Refinement, likely at the third or fourth grade. Lu Yi praises him and suggests a more advanced forging goal.

Character developments

  • Lu Yi is methodical and increasingly ambitious: he intends to hunt the cult discreetly, recruit Nana if possible, and use the mission to develop his Necromancy. He also continues pursuing his Animagus transformation and supports Xiao Hongchen’s growth as a smith.
  • Nana is presented as highly talented but deeply vulnerable to the cult’s coercion, having lost both parents and been threatened through their captive souls.
  • Xiao Hongchen has made a major breakthrough after fewer than four months of training, demonstrating both persistence and significant forging potential.
  • Huo Yuhao remains a key point of reference for Lu Yi’s plans, though the chapter shows him only in the crystal ball’s vision.

Significant themes

  • Power and moral abuse: The Holy Spirit Cult exploits people with spiritual or soul-related abilities, using threats and imprisoned souls to control them.
  • Knowledge as preparation: Lu Yi uses memory magic and divination to plan a targeted operation rather than hunt blindly.
  • Growth through discipline: Lu Yi’s repeated ritual practice and Xiao Hongchen’s forging breakthrough both reflect gradual mastery.
  • Changing events and recurring connections: Although past events have diverged from their original course, Lu Yi suspects Huo Yuhao is still destined to meet certain people.

Character interactions

  • Lu Yi studies Nana’s history and considers both rescuing her and bringing her into the Ministry of Magic.
  • Through the crystal ball, Lu Yi observes Huo Yuhao and identifies Nana by her appearance, academy badge, and frustrated reaction to him.
  • Lu Yi congratulates Xiao Hongchen on his Thousand Refinement and encourages him to attempt a higher level by bringing spiritual power, Soul Power, and vitality into harmony with the metal.

Ch. 267The Idea of Spirit Forging! Herbology and Potions Tasks Complete

Key plot points and events

  • Lu Yi tells Xiao Hongchen that forging has a realm beyond Thousand Refinement: Spirit Forging, in which metal’s faint responsiveness to Soul Power develops into stronger sentience. He advises Xiao to first become consistent at first-grade Thousand Refinement.
  • Xiao realizes that his talent for sensing metal may make him especially suited to forging. Inspired by the possibility of becoming the first to master Spirit Forging, he resolves to pursue it.
  • Xiao continues teaching Soul Tool classes at Lu Yi’s Ministry of Magic. His advanced Sun Moon Empire knowledge helps its Soul Engineers progress, though Lu Yi recognizes that the Ministry needs a permanent high-level instructor. He considers Xuan Ziwen but sees no clear way to recruit him.
  • More than two months later, Lu Yi harvests his first greenhouse crop and completes the Herbologist task with a 98% survival rate. The reward is ten portions of Special Fertilizer and its recipe. The fertilizer speeds plant growth and boosts yields, potentially helping Lu Yi expand his Potions business.
  • The recipe requires dragon dung. Lu Yi considers using dung from a dragon or a dragon-blooded Soul Beast, but is reluctant to approach a powerful dragon he knows and saves the fertilizer rather than using it casually.
  • During his nightly Animagus ritual, Lu Yi detects the irregular heartbeat indicating that his Animagus has finished forming. He waits until late night, summons his Thunderclap Infernal Vine Soul Spirit to gather storm clouds, and retrieves the potion he buried nearly three months earlier. It has turned blood-red, the desired state, and the Potion Brewer task reaches 7/7 Potent Grade Potions.

Character developments and interactions

  • Xiao Hongchen shifts from focusing mainly on Soul Engineer rankings to seeing forging as a path to an even greater achievement. Lu Yi mentors him, explaining Spirit Forging while also reminding him not to neglect his studies.
  • Lu Yi balances teaching, running the Ministry of Magic, and completing his magical tasks. He is practical about the fertilizer’s value and cautious about recruiting staff and handling powerful dragons.
  • Xiao’s daily teaching benefits the Ministry’s Soul Engineers, while Lu Yi quietly weighs longer-term staffing needs. Lu Yi also coordinates with his Thunderclap Infernal Vine before using its storm-making ability.

Significant themes

  • Ambition and discovery: Xiao is drawn to forging’s unexplored potential, while Lu Yi’s tasks continually open new avenues for growth.
  • Mentorship and knowledge transfer: Lu Yi guides Xiao’s forging development, and Xiao passes his expertise on to the Ministry’s Soul Engineers.
  • Practical resource management: Lu Yi weighs the fertilizer’s scarcity, the needs of his Potions business, and the difficulty of obtaining ingredients.
  • Progress through patience: Consistent practice, careful cultivation, and waiting for the right conditions are central to both forging and Lu Yi’s Animagus preparation.

Ch. 268Animagus Form! A Second Martial Soul

  • Lu Yi receives a major reward: The potion-brewing mission grants him the recipe for the Elixir of Life, which can extend a person’s lifespan by ten years. He suspects the separate Alchemist mission may eventually provide a way to create the Philosopher’s Stone, a key ingredient. For now, he sets the discovery aside to finish his Animagus trial.
  • He completes the transformation: Lu Yi travels to an isolated wasteland and drinks the Animagus potion. The transformation is intensely painful, but he emerges as a small Three-Eyed Golden Lion, the same rare Soul Beast as the Emperor Auspicious Beast he has encountered before. His new form has extraordinary strength, stamina, speed, and night vision. He safely changes back into human form, finding no physical damage or altered meridians.
  • A second Martial Soul awakens: When Lu Yi tries to summon his Wand, a Three-Eyed Golden Lion appears instead, accompanied by an unusual green Soul Ring. The transformation has apparently awakened a powerful Second Martial Soul. He suppresses the glowing manifestation to avoid attracting attention, but is left wondering why the form and Soul Ring appeared.
  • The Seed of Nature is revealed: Lu Yi consults his Soul Spirit, Little Thunder, which now addresses him as “my lord.” Little Thunder explains that Lu Yi carries the Seed of Nature, whose aura stabilized only moments earlier. It had sensed the Golden Tree’s aura faintly before meeting him, but it strengthened more than three months ago—around the time Lu Yi encountered the Golden Tree and its Life Core. Lu Yi concludes that the Seed was planted in him then and that the new Martial Soul gave it a Soul Ring slot sooner than expected. He cannot explain why the ring is green rather than green-gold.
  • Character developments and interactions: Lu Yi’s initial excitement over the Elixir of Life gives way to caution as he faces the dangers of transforming into a Soul Beast. After surviving, he tests his new abilities methodically and begins connecting the transformation to his earlier experiences. Little Thunder’s changed form of address confirms Lu Yi’s new status, while its explanation deepens the mystery. Lu Yi turns to Elder Yi for further insight, but Elder Yi immediately notices that the Gold of Life within Lu Yi is losing Life Force.
  • Themes: The chapter focuses on transformation and unexpected power, the risks of crossing boundaries between human, Magical Creature, and Soul Beast, and the way past encounters can shape hidden changes. It also emphasizes mystery and foreshadowing: Lu Yi’s new form, Second Martial Soul, green Soul Ring, Seed of Nature, and draining Gold of Life raise questions the chapter leaves unresolved.

Ch. 269A Method for Awakening Twin Martial Souls

Key plot points and events

  • Elder Yi warns Lu Yi that the Seed of Nature is drawing Life Force from the Gold of Life inside him. At the current rate, it could be depleted in ten years. He suspects the Seed needs heavy nourishment while young, but may eventually return energy to Lu Yi.
  • Lu Yi tells Elder Yi about his Animagus form, newly awakened Second Martial Soul, and green Soul Ring. He privately considers obtaining the Gold of Life held by the Golden Hawksbill Turtle, possibly making it a Soul Spirit.
  • Lu Yi keeps his Second Martial Soul secret and suspects it may be an Ultimate Attribute Martial Soul, since his cultivation seems to require more Soul Power than before.
  • Elder Yi explains that Lu Yi’s transformation became a Martial Soul because of an unlikely chain of events: he first gained a dormant Martial Soul slot through his Blazing Flame Spirit Fox Soul Spirit, then Attribute Guidance helped solidify his Animagus form. Changing or omitting either step could have produced a different result.
  • Lu Yi theorizes that Animagus forms may reflect a person’s bloodline, and that combining Animagus Transformation with the Martial Soul system might let some Soul Masters awaken a Second Martial Soul later in life.
  • He recognizes the potential value—and risks—of this discovery: it could help Soul Masters overcome cultivation limits and attract talented recruits to the Ministry of Magic, but might also increase pressure on Soul Beast populations. He resolves that the idea needs careful study and experimentation.

Character developments

  • Lu Yi shifts from processing an unexpected transformation to thinking like a researcher and strategist. He sees the possibility of a major breakthrough, but also recognizes his limited evidence and growing responsibilities.
  • Elder Yi (Electrolux) investigates the awakening and offers a measured explanation, while reassuring Lu Yi about the Seed of Nature. He acknowledges the danger of the Gold of Life draining away but expects the demand to ease.
  • Lu Yi becomes more cautious about revealing his Second Martial Soul and more ambitious about understanding how it arose.

Significant themes

  • Discovery and uncertainty: Lu Yi’s explanations are promising theories, not proven facts; further experiments are essential.
  • Power and responsibility: A method for awakening Second Martial Souls could transform people’s prospects, but may carry ecological costs.
  • Identity and belonging: Lu Yi’s outsider nature helps explain why his transformation differs from that of native Soul Masters.
  • Opportunity versus burden: A potentially world-changing discovery leaves Lu Yi with more obligations and too little time.

Character interactions

  • Lu Yi confides in Elder Yi about his transformation and concerns over the Gold of Life; Elder Yi responds with reassurance and analysis.
  • Lu Yi urges Elder Yi not to sacrifice himself by becoming a Martial Soul, underscoring their mutual trust and concern.
  • Lu Yi considers how the discovery might benefit companions such as Xiao Xiao and Ning Tian, as well as the wider Ministry of Magic.

Ch. 270Departure

Key plot points and events

  • Having completed his Herbologist task and Animagus trial, Lu Yi prepares for a long journey to pursue several goals: test himself against Holy Spirit Cult Evil Soul Masters, recruit talent for the Ministry of Magic, and investigate the Sun Moon Empire and its Soul Tools.
  • Before leaving, he gives the team four veterans a magically animated, speaking textbook and a Storage Bracelet containing additional study materials. They will take turns teaching in his absence.
  • Lu Yi reflects on his experiments with enchanted recording and printing devices. Though the panel does not count them as qualifying magical items, they can support his teaching—and he hopes eventually to develop portraits that can teach and converse like their subjects.
  • He considers ways to expand the Ministry of Magic, including establishing an academy for young Soul Masters. He also wants to find a way to measure and cultivate mental power, and asks Ning Tian to investigate whether Spirit-Essence Sea Urchins can be farmed.
  • The next morning, Lu Yi’s companions gather to see him off. He gives them a password—“Hogwarts”—to identify anyone he may send back to them, then leaves Shrek City on his Flying Soul Tool for Mingdu.

Character developments and interactions

  • Lu Yi shows his growing ambition as a teacher, inventor, and organizer. He is planning beyond his own tasks, seeking to build a larger magical community and secure resources for its development.
  • Ning Tian readily agrees to investigate sea-urchin farming and promises to manage things while Lu Yi is away. She takes pride in being useful to him and admires what she sees as his business sense, though Lu Yi is largely unaware of her personal feelings.
  • Xiao Xiao, Zhou Sichen, and Cao Jinxuan marvel at the new textbook and confidently wish Lu Yi a safe journey. The group accepts its teaching duties and his instructions.
  • Lu Yi’s delegation of lessons and responsibilities reflects the trust between him and the team, especially Ning Tian’s reliability.

Significant themes

  • Knowledge and institutional growth: Lu Yi wants magic to become a lasting discipline taught to future generations, not merely a skill practiced by a few.
  • Innovation and practical magic: Enchantment lets Lu Yi create tools far beyond the era’s usual capabilities, even when the panel does not recognize them as formal achievements.
  • Mental cultivation and resources: The chapter emphasizes mental power as crucial to spellcasting and Soul Spirit fusion, while highlighting the difficulty of securing valuable ingredients.
  • Ambition and the future: Lu Yi’s journey combines personal advancement with recruitment, research, and preparation for coming changes in technology and warfare.

Ch. 271The Sword Fanatic Ji Juechen

Key plot points and events

  • Lu Yi travels rapidly from the Mingdou Mountains toward Mingdu using his continually improved Flying Soul Tool, which reaches speeds beyond standard Level 7 models despite his being only a Soul King.
  • He reflects on the mountains’ lawless character, Mingdu’s Soul Power–driven modernization, and how dependence on rare Soul Power users slows technological progress.
  • After landing outside the city, Lu Yi enters Mingdu openly and goes to the Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy to find Nana.
  • Rather than search aimlessly, he rents a hotel room overlooking the Academy, disguises himself as a fourth- or fifth-year student, and sneaks onto campus.
  • Lu Yi waits near the black Teaching Building, expecting to spot Nana among the senior students. Instead, Ji Juechen approaches and immediately challenges him to spar.
  • Ji recognizes that Lu Yi is an outsider—not from his disguise, but because Lu Yi neither avoids nor fears him as Academy students usually do. Sensing something unusual about Lu Yi, Ji insists on a match and promises not to interrupt his wait afterward.

Character developments

  • Lu Yi demonstrates confidence, ingenuity, and technical skill through his fast, upgraded Soul Tool and precise magical disguise. He admires Ji Juechen’s self-made rise but is focused on finding Nana, not fighting.
  • Ji Juechen is presented as intensely devoted to swordsmanship, socially intimidating, and direct. His unusual sensitivity to Lu Yi’s presence strengthens his resolve to challenge him.

Significant themes

  • Technology and development: Soul Power offers clean energy, but its high costs and reliance on a gifted minority constrain progress.
  • Self-made achievement: Ji Juechen’s determination and sword obsession have carried him far despite modest innate talent and no special advantages.
  • Perception and identity: Lu Yi’s disguise fools others, but his behavior betrays him to Ji, showing that manner and instinct can reveal what appearance conceals.

Character interactions

  • Lu Yi tries to politely decline Ji’s challenge, explaining that he is waiting for someone. Ji counters that he knows Lu Yi is not a student and offers to keep quiet if Lu Yi agrees to spar. The chapter ends with Ji’s renewed appeal and Lu Yi’s decision still unresolved.

Ch. 272A Battle of Minds

Key events

  • Ji Juechen challenges Lu Yi after noticing that Lu Yi’s spiritual presence is unusually subdued. He attacks with concentrated Sword Intent, turning the spar into a contest of wills rather than a physical fight.
  • Lu Yi avoids matching Ji Juechen’s force directly. He first uses the Confundus Charm as a distraction, then plants a vivid false memory of a legendary swordsman’s final battle in Ji Juechen’s mind. Ji Juechen becomes absorbed in it for over ten seconds before recovering.
  • Ji Juechen realizes Lu Yi could have left him helpless and asks what technique he used and who the swordsman was. Lu Yi conceals the details, saying only that the swordsman is dead and that he prefers to end fights quickly.
  • Their exchange helps Lu Yi recognize that his spiritual power is too inwardly focused. He considers learning to project it more directly.
  • Ji Juechen explains that Lu Yi’s unnaturally calm spiritual fluctuations and failure to act like a wary Sun Moon Academy student made him suspicious. Lu Yi realizes effective disguises require convincing behavior, not just altered appearance.
  • Lu Yi considers recruiting Ji Juechen to the Ministry of Magic but concludes that its culture would not suit Ji’s single-minded pursuit of strong sparring partners. He chooses not to pressure him.
  • The chapter ends as Lu Yi spots the female student he came to meet.

Character development and interactions

  • Lu Yi proves resourceful and formidable despite being disadvantaged in a direct spiritual contest. His use of mental manipulation is controlled but unsettling, and the encounter prompts him to reassess his fighting methods and disguise.
  • Ji Juechen shows sharp perception, discipline, and an intense devotion to swordsmanship. The false memory deeply affects him, but he honors his promise to leave Lu Yi alone after the spar. He is intrigued by both Lu Yi’s technique and the swordsman he seemed to experience.
  • Their interaction is respectful but cautious: Ji seeks a worthy opponent, while Lu Yi prefers to avoid fighting and keeps his abilities and identity concealed.

Significant themes

  • Different forms of power: Ji relies on focused force, while Lu Yi wins through misdirection and psychological precision.
  • Perception and concealment: Lu Yi’s disguise fails not because of its appearance, but because his behavior and spiritual presence seem unnatural.
  • Identity and memory: Lu Yi’s fabricated recollection feels real enough to momentarily take control of Ji’s experience.
  • Belonging and personal priorities: Ji’s need for powerful peers contrasts with the Ministry of Magic’s goals, showing that talent alone does not guarantee a good fit.

Ch. 273Talking with Nana

Key plot points and events

  • Lu Yi approaches Nana, hoping to learn the location and layout of the local Holy Spirit Cult branch—and to recruit her rather than simply use her information.
  • Nana mistakes him for a cult member at first. When he mentions the Holy Spirit Cult in public, she quickly pretends they are discussing something intimate and takes him to her dorm room.
  • Once there, Nana explains her fear and distrust: the Cult controls her and holds her parents’ souls captive. Lu Yi clarifies that he intends to destroy the branch, then magically seals the room so she can speak freely.
  • Convinced by the light-aligned aura of Lu Yi’s Wand Martial Soul, Nana shares what she knows: the branch’s location, its members, and their roles. She offers to guide Lu Yi during the required gathering of Holy Servants two days later.
  • Nana warns that the branch is defended by an Elder at Soul Saint level and two Holy Spirits at Soul Emperor level. Lu Yi reveals he plans to go alone and is already level fifty-five. He also claims he can free her parents’ souls.

Character developments

  • Lu Yi shows confidence and calculation. He conceals how much he already knows, reassures Nana without resenting her suspicion, and reveals his strength only when she doubts his plan.
  • Nana shifts from guarded and wary to cooperative and hopeful once she believes Lu Yi is not a Cult agent. Her willingness to share information—and offer to guide him—shows how strongly she wants the Cult destroyed and her parents rescued.
  • Ji Juechen briefly appears, assumes Lu Yi’s meeting with Nana may be romantic, and leaves after learning Lu Yi’s name.

Character interactions

  • Nana initially treats Lu Yi as a potential threat, while Lu Yi calmly earns her trust by explaining his purpose and displaying his Wand.
  • Nana provides intelligence and offers practical help; Lu Yi responds with a promise that he can rescue her parents’ souls.
  • Lu Yi’s claim that he can face the branch alone shocks Nana, who doubts his age and ability.

Significant themes

  • Trust under coercion: Nana’s secrecy and suspicion stem from the Cult’s control and the danger of confiding in outsiders.
  • Hope and liberation: The prospect of destroying the branch and freeing her parents gives Nana a reason to act.
  • Power and underestimated ability: Lu Yi’s youthful appearance leads Nana to doubt him, while his level and confidence challenge her assumptions.

Ch. 274Testing

Key plot points and events

  • Nana challenges Lu Yi to prove his strength by attacking him in her cramped dormitory. Though they share the same cultivation level, Lu Yi anticipates her moves, blocks her blade with Protego, and defeats her with a Disarming Charm.
  • Lu Yi uses Nana’s own blades to pin her clothes and body outline to the table without injuring her. He then restores the weapons, furniture, and room with Reparo.
  • Convinced by the overwhelming demonstration, Nana accepts that Lu Yi may be capable of helping destroy a branch of the Holy Spirit Cult and rescue her parents. Lu Yi gives her the codename Gellert and discusses the operation with her.
  • Lu Yi asks whether the Academy can measure mental strength. Nana knows of tests for physical fitness and Soul Power, but not mental strength.
  • Curious about his own transformed body, Lu Yi visits the Academy’s Physical Testing Area. The device reports extraordinary results: physical strength at level 78, resilience at 72, and Soul Power fluctuations at 55—ratings equivalent to a Soul Saint’s physique and Soul King-level cultivation. The staff member assumes the device is faulty, and Lu Yi plays along, asking for his fee back.

Character developments

  • Lu Yi demonstrates both formidable combat skill and restraint, carefully avoiding magic that could seriously harm Nana. His physical transformation proves far greater than he expected.
  • Nana shifts from skepticism to belief in Lu Yi’s ability. Her defeat initially humbles her, but it also gives her hope that he can save her parents. She is quick to see the favorable side of the outcome.
  • The testing-room attendant dismisses Lu Yi’s results as a malfunction, unaware of how unusual his abilities truly are.

Significant themes

  • Power balanced by restraint: Lu Yi wins decisively but controls his force to avoid harming Nana.
  • Hope through strength: Nana’s belief in Lu Yi grows because his power makes her long-awaited rescue seem possible.
  • Hidden potential and transformation: Lu Yi’s physical test reveals that his body has changed far beyond his expectations.
  • Deception and identity: Lu Yi operates under the codename “Gellert” and lets others misinterpret his abilities and test results.

Character interactions

  • Nana and Lu Yi’s fight turns a challenge into a demonstration of trust: she tests him, and he proves his strength without causing serious injury.
  • Afterward, Lu Yi answers Nana’s questions, gives her a codename for him to use, and consults her about Academy testing equipment.
  • At the testing station, Lu Yi and the attendant interpret the anomalous results differently: Lu Yi recognizes their significance, while the attendant blames faulty equipment.

Ch. 275Soul Power Testing Device

Key plot points and events

  • Lu Yi asks for a refund after the Physical Testing Device’s initial result seems impossible, but the attendant refuses. Lu Yi controls his scores on the remaining tests, concealing his true ability.
  • Recently transformed through Animagus, Lu Yi feels dramatically stronger than before. He recognizes that this new strength gives his usual evasive, cautious fighting style more options.
  • Lu Yi disguises himself and listens as the device’s maker returns to inspect it. The machine works correctly, confirming that Lu Yi’s extraordinary physical measurements were genuine. The maker concludes that the Academy may have an unknown genius among its students.
  • Lu Yi follows the maker to his workshop, where he discovers a small Soul Tool business producing testing devices and other nonmilitary equipment.
  • Disguised as a merchant, Lu Yi visits the workshop and claims a connection to Teacher Xuan Ziwen to establish credibility. The maker quotes a high price for a Physical Testing Device, then shows him the workshop’s products.
  • The maker explains that he developed the device to help predict what Soul Ring ages people could safely absorb, but demand has been limited. Lu Yi points out that physical fitness alone is not enough: spiritual power also helps someone withstand the Soul Shock of absorbing a Ten Thousand Year Soul Ring.
  • Lu Yi suggests that combining physical and spiritual-power testing could make the products useful to mid- and high-level Soul Masters and Soul Engineers. The maker is thrilled by the insight and calls Lu Yi a kindred spirit.

Character developments

  • Lu Yi remains cautious and resourceful, masking his identity while investigating the device and its maker. He also shows technical insight, recognizing a more valuable application for the testing equipment.
  • The middle-aged Soul Engineer shifts from anger at being summoned unnecessarily to curiosity and enthusiasm. His frustration with the limited market for his inventions gives way to renewed hope when Lu Yi identifies a broader use.
  • The testing attendant is exposed as careless: he never checked whether the device was malfunctioning before calling its maker, and he accepts a scolding and payment for the mistake.

Significant themes

  • Measurement and personal limits: The chapter explores how better testing might replace guesswork when choosing Soul Rings.
  • Knowledge as opportunity: Lu Yi connects physical capacity with spiritual power to reveal a market the inventor had overlooked.
  • Risk and privilege: Wealthy or powerful families can afford safer Soul Ring choices, while people of humble birth may have to take greater risks. Wang Dong is an exceptional case because her Soul Rings are apparently god-bestowed.
  • Disguise and misrecognition: Lu Yi’s altered appearance and ordinary-looking cover let him move unnoticed, while others mistake his remarkable ability for evidence of an unknown Academy student.

Character interactions

  • Lu Yi challenges the attendant over the refund, then later overhears him being reprimanded by the device’s maker.
  • The maker confronts the attendant, verifies the machine, and realizes the results may reveal a hidden prodigy.
  • Lu Yi approaches the maker under a false identity, earns his confidence through a fabricated connection to Xuan Ziwen, and turns a sales conversation into a productive exchange of ideas.

Ch. 276The Contract! Scouting the Ground

Chapter Summary

Key plot points and events

  • Lu Yi visits a Soul Engineer whose main project is a device for measuring spirit power. The researcher explains that spirit power is difficult to measure because it varies with a Soul Master’s Martial Soul, training, and other factors.
  • Lu Yi suggests using people who have just awakened their Martial Souls as a shared baseline, recording measurements across different levels of Innate Soul Power. The researcher accepts that a useful standard must be established by common agreement, not just technical design.
  • Lu Yi proposes financing the research in exchange for access to the resulting technology. The researcher chooses this arrangement over becoming Lu Yi’s employee, preserving his independence. They sign a contract: Lu Yi pays two million Gold Soul Coins and buys three Physical Testing Devices; thirty percent is paid in advance, with the rest due when results are delivered. The project has a three-year deadline, with yearly progress checks.
  • Before the Holy Spirit Cult branch’s gathering, Lu Yi scouts the area around its hidden base. He memorizes concealed locations that could help him escape using Apparition, rather than relying on Elder Yi to rescue him.
  • Lu Yi visits Sun Moon Academy and finds Huo Yuhao still motionless in meditation, as he has been since his duel with Ji Juechen nearly half a year earlier. Lu Yi anticipates that Huo Yuhao may soon awaken and wonders how he will respond to Mu En’s death.
  • On the evening of the third day, Lu Yi arrives at Nana’s room. She worries that the academy records students leaving at night; Lu Yi assures her he will handle the risk and takes her by the arm.

Character developments and interactions

  • Lu Yi shows respect for research and scientific standards, offering practical advice without claiming authority over a field he does not fully understand. He is willing to spend heavily to make useful technology possible, even without expecting a large financial return.
  • The Soul Engineer gains a clearer approach to measuring spirit power and chooses funding that lets him continue pursuing his own research interests. His bargaining shows that he recognizes the deal’s value to himself.
  • Lu Yi and the Soul Engineer move from enthusiastic intellectual rapport to a negotiated business partnership, balancing the researcher’s independence with Lu Yi’s need for progress updates and eventual access to the technology.
  • Lu Yi and Nana prepare to leave together despite the risk of detection. Nana is cautious; Lu Yi is confident he can manage the academy’s records.
  • Lu Yi and Huo Yuhao do not interact directly, but Lu Yi compares their approaches to combining spirit power and Soul Power and reflects on Huo Yuhao’s impending awakening.

Significant themes

  • Measurement and shared standards: Spirit power is difficult to quantify, and dependable units require both a workable method and broad agreement.
  • Investment in innovation: Lu Yi values the creation of new knowledge over immediate profit, while the researcher values the freedom to follow his own ideas.
  • Preparation and self-reliance: Lu Yi maps escape routes before approaching danger and refuses to treat past rescues as proof of his own strength.
  • Potential and insight: Huo Yuhao’s prolonged meditation represents the possibility of breakthrough, while Lu Yi’s reflections reveal his own ongoing search for understanding.

Ch. 277Operation Begins! Three Evil Soul Masters

Plot points and events

  • Lu Yi uses Instantaneous Movement to take Nana from her dorm to a hotel outside the Academy. Nana is shaken by the journey and amazed that he can transport her so far, despite claiming to be only a Soul King.
  • Lu Yi explains that his abilities are secret arts he treats as Self-Created Soul Skills. Nana realizes he defeated her in their earlier spar without using conventional Soul Skills.
  • After a long walk, Lu Yi tells Nana to enter the Holy Spirit Cult branch as usual while he follows invisibly. She reaches a hidden courtyard, gives the proper knock and password, and uses a concealed mechanism to access an underground chamber.
  • Lu Yi notices that the guards have been brainwashed and stripped of their memories. Inside, he finds more than a dozen controlled Holy Servants, most of them at least Soul Ancestor level.
  • Nana greets three senior cultists: the Elder, the Great Holy Spirit, and the Second Holy Spirit. The Great Holy Spirit says she may become the Third Holy Spirit after completing the Spirit Ascension Ritual.
  • Lu Yi suspects the Second Holy Spirit can sense him and decides to strike first. Under the Imperius Curse, the Second Holy Spirit suddenly attacks the Elder, wounding him.
  • As the Elder and Great Holy Spirit react, Lu Yi hits the Great Holy Spirit with a soul-targeting attack, dropping him in agony. The Elder realizes an unseen enemy is present and demands that the attacker reveal himself.

Character developments and interactions

  • Nana remains deeply committed to rescuing her parents’ souls; she is willing to serve Lu Yi—or die—if he can accomplish it. Her awe at Lu Yi’s skills also leads her to wonder what powerful faction trained him.
  • Lu Yi shows confidence, caution, and tactical resourcefulness. He keeps Nana safe, infiltrates the branch unseen, and chooses an ambush when he thinks he may have been detected.
  • The cult leaders are caught off guard by the sudden attack. The Second Holy Spirit becomes Lu Yi’s unwilling weapon, while the Great Holy Spirit tries to respond but is incapacitated.
  • Nana interacts respectfully with the cult hierarchy to maintain her cover, while Lu Yi’s covert actions turn the ceremony into a chaotic confrontation.

Significant themes

  • Freedom versus coercion: The brainwashed guards and controlled Holy Servants reveal the cult’s exploitation of people, while Nana’s hope of freeing her parents drives her choices.
  • Hidden power and deception: Lu Yi’s unusual abilities, Nana’s disguise, and the secret entrance all emphasize concealment and misdirection.
  • Loyalty and desperation: Nana’s willingness to give up her future for her parents shows how strongly family bonds shape her decisions.

Ch. 278Purifying the Vengeful Spirits! "Get Up, All of You! No Kneeling!"

Plot and key events

  • The elder of a Holy Spirit Cult branch prepares to use his Myriad Souls Banner against a hidden intruder, mistakenly assuming the intruder is another Evil Soul Master and offering to introduce him to the cult’s leadership.
  • Lu Yi recognizes that the elder may have useful information, but remains ready to fight. He sends slow-moving white flames toward the banner, revealing his power over light.
  • When the elder activates the banner and releases hundreds of souls, Nana attacks to distract him. The elder knocks her aside and opens the branch’s altar, releasing more souls—including the Holy Servants’ deceased relatives—to be transformed into vengeful spirits.
  • Once all the available souls are gathered, Lu Yi reveals himself. He accelerates and enlarges the light, then detonates it within the spirits’ formation. The blast badly injures the elder and the Great Holy Spirit, while purifying more than five hundred souls and freeing them from the cult’s corruption.
  • Lu Yi restrains the three Evil Soul Masters. His mission progress updates to 3/10.
  • He tells the freed souls they may say goodbye to family or pass on. After many express their gratitude, the souls fade away.
  • The Holy Servants kneel to thank Lu Yi. He angrily tells them to stand and rejects the gesture, asking them instead to put their Soul Tool skills to good use. After Nana explains that he leads an organization, the former captives ask to join it.

Character developments and interactions

  • Lu Yi shows both tactical restraint and compassion: he delays killing the elder in hopes of gaining intelligence, then uses the Purifying Flame to free the souls rather than destroy them. He also rejects deference and asks to be called “Boss,” not “Master.”
  • Nana risks herself to create an opening when Lu Yi’s initial attack seems ineffective. Once freed, she is eager to join Lu Yi’s organization.
  • The branch elder underestimates Lu Yi, mistaking his youth and concealed presence for weakness. His confidence collapses when the Purifying Flame overwhelms his forces.
  • The Holy Servants move from terror and grief to relief and gratitude. Though conditioned to submit, they hope to escape the cult’s control by joining Lu Yi.

Significant themes

  • Purification and release: The souls are freed from corruption, imprisonment, and the cult’s control, allowing them to reunite briefly with loved ones or move on.
  • Resistance to exploitation: The Holy Spirit Cult uses both the dead and the living as weapons and leverage; its victims’ release exposes the cruelty of that system.
  • Compassion over power: Lu Yi’s victory is measured not just by defeating enemies but by restoring the souls’ freedom.
  • Rejecting hierarchy: Lu Yi refuses ritualized submission and favors practical contribution and mutual respect over kneeling and titles.

Ch. 279Vampire Boy

Plot points and events

  • Lu Yi examines the rescued students and discovers one boy has been burned by the Purifying Flame. The boy reveals a Vampire Martial Soul, an Evil Martial Soul, and is accused by the others of being an Evil Soul Master.
  • Though the group demands his execution, Lu Yi sends them outside and later emerges alone, leaving them to believe the matter is settled.
  • Lu Yi destroys the Holy Spirit Cult branch with Fiendfyre, containing the flames behind a sealed stone door.
  • He erases the gatekeepers’ memories, gives them money, and releases them. Then he sends Nana and the other eight rescued youths toward the Ministry of Magic in Shrek City, providing brooms to those without flying equipment and making Nana responsible for the group.
  • After they leave, Lu Yi returns to his hotel and enters his Undead Demiplane, where the branch’s three leaders and the Vampire boy are imprisoned. He frees the boy and tells him that most Soul Masters would have killed him on sight, but that he is fortunate to have met Lu Yi.

Character developments and interactions

  • Lu Yi acts as both a decisive leader and a discerning judge: he refuses to let the group condemn the boy without hearing him, while still destroying the Cult’s base and holding its leaders captive. He shows mercy to the brainwashed gatekeepers and trusts Nana with responsibility.
  • Nana grows into Lu Yi’s chosen deputy. She accepts his orders eagerly and promises to guide the group safely to headquarters.
  • The rescued youths are freed from the Cult’s control but retain deep hatred for Evil Soul Masters, leading them to demand the Vampire boy’s death. Their awe at the brooms—and their curiosity about Lu Yi’s organization—grow during the journey.
  • The Vampire boy is frightened and resigned, insisting he has only drunk animal blood and never harmed anyone. His fate remains uncertain, but Lu Yi’s decision to spare and free him signals a possible chance for him.

Significant themes

  • Judgment versus prejudice: The group equates an Evil Martial Soul with guilt, while Lu Yi distinguishes the boy’s nature from his actions.
  • Mercy and responsibility: Lu Yi protects the rescued youths while also showing restraint toward innocents and the accused boy.
  • Liberation and new beginnings: The survivors are released from the Cult and sent toward a new home and unfamiliar possibilities.
  • Power and moral cleansing: Lu Yi uses overwhelming magical force to eradicate the Cult’s base, but contains the destruction to avoid harming the wider city.

Ch. 280Transformation

Plot points and events

  • Lu Yi explains why he spared the vampire boy: using Legilimency, he saw that the boy, now nicknamed Little Ding, is fifteen and has resisted his Evil Vampire Martial Soul’s craving for human blood for nearly ten years. He has survived on animal blood and harmed no one.
  • Though impressed by Little Ding’s self-control, Lu Yi considers the boy’s Martial Soul inherently dangerous. Rather than kill or release him, he keeps him under observation and stores him in an air-equipped magical suitcase.
  • Lu Yi turns to interrogate three captured Evil Soul Masters. Legilimency on their badly wounded Elder exposes disturbing memories but yields no useful information; the Elder has deliberately poisoned his thoughts to frustrate mind-reading.
  • Lu Yi responds with the Wither and Blood Curse spells, draining the Elder’s life and Soul Power, then kills him with Death Lash.
  • Anticipating that the Elder might preserve his soul after death, Lu Yi extracts it and uses Time Rewind to force its memories open. He obtains the information he needs, while the soul begins to disintegrate.
  • The Elder’s corpse rises as an Undead Creature in the Undead Demiplane. Lu Yi notes that it is currently much weaker than it was alive, but could be strengthened through later modification.

Character developments and interactions

  • Little Ding is revealed as a frail, disciplined boy whose restraint comes from his mother’s guidance and his determination to resist his nature. He accepts Lu Yi’s decision to keep him close.
  • Lu Yi shows both caution and curiosity: he refuses to judge Little Ding by his Martial Soul alone, but treats him as a potential danger and research subject. With the Elder, he shifts from attempted mind-reading to ruthless magical interrogation.
  • The Elder initially tries to protect himself by manipulating his thoughts and threatening Lu Yi, but loses control as Lu Yi overwhelms him. His planned postmortem counterattack fails, and his soul is forced to yield its memories.

Significant themes

  • Nature versus self-control: Little Ding’s evil power does not determine his choices, though it remains a real risk.
  • Prejudice and its consequences: Hostility toward people with dark or Evil Martial Souls can drive even the innocent toward the very evil society fears.
  • Power and moral boundaries: Lu Yi acts mercifully toward a victim who has resisted harming others, yet uses extreme force against an irredeemably cruel enemy.
  • Death and utility: Necromancy lets Lu Yi extract information and turn a defeated enemy into an undead servant, making use of both the soul and body.
