Background / History
Life in Holy Soul Village
Tang Hao had previously fought Spirit Hall and Qian Xunji. His wife, Ah Yin, sacrificed herself—a loss that remains a lasting wound and later influences his treatment of Xiao Wu. While living in Holy Soul Village, he works as a blacksmith, drinks heavily, and keeps his family connections hidden from his daughter 4 31 32.
He first encounters Huo Yuhao when he finds Tang Sanmei embracing the badly injured boy in the rain. Assuming the stranger is taking liberties with her, he charges toward him with murderous intent. Sanmei intervenes, and Tang Hao agrees to carry both children home 2.
Sanmei’s growing devotion to Huo Yuhao creates immediate conflict. Tang Hao tries to expel the boy after hearing her offer to become his bedchamber maid, but she threatens to leave with him. He ultimately allows Huo Yuhao to recover at his home, ordering him to sleep in the woodshed and keep his hands off Sanmei 3 4.
Moving to Nuoding City
Unable to stop worrying about Sanmei, Tang Hao sells his village forge and follows her to Nuoding City. When Yu Xiaogang attempts to grab Huo Yuhao, Tang Hao bursts into the office, lifts Yu Xiaogang by the collar without using Soul Power, and takes his Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges belt as compensation 9 10.
He buys a blacksmith shop across from Notting Academy and houses Sanmei, Huo Yuhao, and Xiao Wu there. His attempts to control their sleeping arrangements fail: the girls share the larger bedroom, Huo Yuhao receives the other, and Tang Hao ends up guarding the household from a narrow living-room bench 11.
Tang Hao eventually recognizes Xiao Wu as a newly transformed Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast. Although he considers taking her Soul Ring and Soul Bone, he spares her, influenced by his feelings about transformed Soul Beasts and his expectation that Sanmei would object. He allows Xiao Wu to remain as his daughter’s companion 14 15.
Sanmei’s First Soul Ring
After driving off Yu Xiaogang’s attempts to recruit Sanmei, Tang Hao personally escorts the children to the Soul Hunting Forest. Asked about his strength, he invents a cover story: poor talent, cultivation only in the twenties, and an old injury that forced him back into blacksmithing. Huo Yuhao immediately points out that his physical feats do not fit this account 17 18.
Tang Hao initially rejects Huo Yuhao’s choice of a four-hundred-year mutant Blue Silver Grass for Sanmei. He nevertheless helps capture it, restraining his own strength to avoid destroying its roots. Its relentless regrowth frustrates him until Sanmei uses her matching Martial Soul and the Mysterious Heaven Skill to absorb its vitality 19 20.
He also doubts Sanmei’s resulting skill, Everlasting Life, because its grass breaks easily. After repeatedly becoming entangled in replacement blades, he recognizes the danger of combining endless regrowth, attrition, and Tang Sect Hidden Weapons 21.
Suotuo City and Shrek Academy
Following the trio’s years at Notting Academy, Tang Hao leaves a letter directing Sanmei and Huo Yuhao toward Heaven Dou City. Despite appearing to have vanished, he remains close enough to intervene when Yu Xiaogang plots to have Shrek students defeat Sanmei and pressure her into accepting him as a teacher 23 26.
During the ensuing confrontation, Huo Yuhao calls on him to stop Zhao Wuji. Tang Hao uses an ordinary battered hammer to break Zhao Wuji’s arms and send him and Flender crashing through a store. He then resumes beating Yu Xiaogang, stopping only after Sanmei joins Huo Yuhao in telling him to leave 28 29.
Heaven Dou City and the Sunset Forest
Tang Hao drives the group toward Heaven Dou City and directs them to his younger sister, Tang Yuehua, at Moonlight Pavilion. His letter requests advanced academy enrollment for Sanmei, protection for Xiao Wu through the pavilion’s Noble Ring Domain, and close supervision of Huo Yuhao 30 31 32.
Although he ostensibly leaves the children at the city gates, Tang Hao secretly follows them. At the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, he watches from a cliff crevice, ready to intervene if Dugu Bo threatens them. Huo Yuhao detects his presence and relies on it when assessing Dugu Bo’s murderous intentions 36 37.
Appearance
Tang Hao is tall and burly, with messy hair, a weathered face, and heavy facial stubble 2 5 9 18.
- Clothing: Wears faded garments and presents himself as a shabby village blacksmith 17 28.
- Scent: Frequently reeks of alcohol, iron rust, and stale sweat 9 11.
- Habits: Often carries a large smithing hammer and drinks directly from wine containers 23 28 31.
Personality
Tang Hao is fiercely protective of Sanmei but remarkably easy for her to sway. Her resemblance to his late wife softens his anger during Huo Yuhao’s rescue, and her insistence repeatedly makes him abandon threats or accept arrangements he dislikes 2 4 11.
His protectiveness can become impulsive violence. Yu Xiaogang’s awkward descriptions of Soul Ring absorption sound predatory to him, provoking a potentially lethal attack before Huo Yuhao explains the misunderstanding. Even afterward, he refuses to tolerate Yu Xiaogang’s continued pursuit of Sanmei as a disciple 16 17.
He deeply resents Sanmei’s preference for Huo Yuhao and often mocks the boy’s apparently poor talent. Nevertheless, witnessing Huo Yuhao’s unusual cultivation, perception skills, and tactical judgment unsettles his assumptions. By the journey to Heaven Dou City, he grudgingly advises Sanmei to consult Huo Yuhao when necessary while continuing to warn her against being exploited 7 8 13 18 31.
