Background / History
Qian Zong built the Martial Soul Library during the three months following his appointment as Spirit Hall’s Young Hall Master. Its collection consisted of copies of Spirit Hall texts, which Soul Masters from across the continent could borrow for free. The library formed part of his renovation of Spirit City, alongside new shops, cafés, and food stalls 9.
Opening the library to Soul Masters across the continent was one of two central measures in Qian Zong’s “livelihood policy”; the other opened Spirit City to commoners. These reforms attracted newcomers and investigators from rival factions. Qian Zong viewed access to knowledge as a means of earning public loyalty and turning Spirit Hall’s existing resources into the foundations of an empire 10 11 12.
Layout and Collections
- Size and structure: Covers more than thirty thousand square meters, with three floors arranged in a ring beside Pope Mountain 23.
- Atrium: A large open atrium allows observers upstairs to see more than sixty percent of the Soul Masters on the ground floor. Its second-floor railing is glass 23 26.
- Private study: Qian Zong’s study lies thirty-odd meters from the atrium 23.
- Hidden passage: A bookshelf conceals a passage containing a spiral staircase connecting all three floors. A blue book activates the bookshelf entrance, and a path at the back leads directly toward Pope Mountain 11 22.
- Rear access: A concealed entrance is accessible from the small alley behind the library 20.
Floor Access
| Floor | Contents | Access |
|---|---|---|
| First | Basic Soul Master knowledge and books of common knowledge | Free consultation for any Soul Master who proves their status 23 |
| Second | Records accumulated by Spirit Hall over ten thousand years, scholarly theses, and research findings | Free reading upon proof of Spirit Hall membership 23 |
| Third | Strictly confidential texts, including Soul Tool knowledge, illustrated Immortal Herb guides, and accounts of the continent’s wonders | Restricted to Spirit Hall’s most central members 23 |
Notable Holdings
- Spirit Hall Genius Members Register: Installed along the north wall of the first floor; records basic information and Soul Ring ages for gifted Spirit Hall members throughout its history 9.
- Extensive historical collection: Holds more texts than the collections of both empires combined 11.
- Proposed Heaven Dou contribution: Qian Zong asks Xue Qinghe to bring the empire’s archived books into the library. Xue Qinghe leaves the decision to Emperor Xue Ye rather than approving it himself 27.
Rules and Security
- Loud disturbances and group fights are forbidden; notices explicitly prohibit fighting 24 25.
- Guards at the concealed entrance prevent unauthorized entry through the hidden passage 22.
- Although the interior is spacious enough for battles between Soul Kings, stronger fighters cannot fight freely without risking the building’s destruction 31.
Security Forces
All three regular security forces are drawn from the Angel Legion 34.
| Force | Organization | Duties |
|---|---|---|
| Stationary guards | Soul Ancestor rank or higher; four six-hour shifts provide full-day coverage | Hold fixed posts 34 |
| Patrol guards | Ten pairs | Make scheduled rounds of the first and second floors, handling disturbances, book theft, and minor incidents 34 |
| Law Enforcement Team | Led by Soul Kings; patrols at irregular intervals | Arrest offenders under the Library Master’s orders 34 |
- Law Enforcement equipment: Gleaming gold regulation uniforms, standard-issue longswords, rectangular belt pouches, and silver cuffs used to restrain prisoners 34.
- Documented deployment: Squads Six, Seven, Eight, and Nine report when Qian Zong summons the team after the Star Luo confrontation 34.
Titled Douluo Guardians
| Guardian | Assignment and actions |
|---|---|
| Ci Xue | Invited by Qian Zong as a trusted guardian; shields spectators and warns She Long against destroying the library with a wide-area attack 28 31 |
| She Long | Invited alongside Ci Xue; fights the Star Luo guards but abandons his Eighth Soul Skill when warned of the structural danger 28 31 |
| Qian Jun | Sent by Qian Daoliu; uses gravity pressure to subdue the intruders 28 33 |
| Jiang Mo | Sent alongside Qian Jun; traps the intruders with his domain 28 33 |
Qian Daoliu’s stated reason for assigning Qian Jun and Jiang Mo was to guard the library. Their additional purpose was to watch Ci Xue and She Long for possible leaks of the Worship Hall’s secrets 28.
Political Significance
- Attracting unaffiliated Soul Masters: Free access draws Soul Master families to Spirit City, strengthening Spirit Hall’s reputation and challenging the empires’ influence 10.
- Foreign investigation: Both empires dispatch overt and covert investigators. Dai Weisi and Dai Yan spend their first seven days in the city reading the library’s texts 11.
- Intelligence gathering: Soul Masters from other factions secretly copy books and investigate Spirit Hall’s intentions 11.
- Knowledge against privilege: Qian Zong’s proposal to expand free reading unsettles Heaven Dou guards Qin Lan and Lu Zheng, whose noble backgrounds make them resent the prospect of commoners accessing books 27.
- Undermining Yu Xiaogang: Qian Zong expects wider access to learning to expose the weakness of Yu Xiaogang’s theories and discredit his “Grandmaster” reputation 27.
- Public prestige: During the Star Luo crisis, Qian Zong seeks to strengthen both the library’s standing and his own reputation through its defense 32.
