Ch. 281Four Ways to Win Kaguya Ōtsutsuki Over?
Plot points and events
- Black Zetsu tells Obito that Shinji Uchiha has awakened the Rinnegan and has reached—or possibly surpassed—Indra’s level despite not being a reincarnation. Both are unsettled by how far Shinji has advanced.
- Zetsu urges Obito to revive Kaguya and restore the world by reclaiming its chakra. To regain Obito’s trust, he claims he acted out of concern when he revived Madara and says Madara later abandoned and tried to kill him.
- Obito accepts Zetsu’s explanation but remains suspicious of Shinji’s motives. Zetsu suggests Shinji may be watching them, prompting Obito to look toward Kabuto’s laboratory and wonder what Shinji is waiting for.
- The chapter reveals that Shinji is simply waiting for Obito to act. His new missions are to defeat Six Paths Obito and release Kaguya, then defeat Kaguya; he also receives strange challenges involving Naruto, Sasuke, the Sage of Six Paths, and even winning Kaguya over.
- At Orochimaru’s laboratory, Shinji waits while Orochimaru examines Nobihi, who has swallowed the Chakra Fruit. Shinji casually asks whether Hikari has grown; a brief, awkward exchange with Hikari and Kurotsuchi ends on Hikari’s puzzlement over what Shinji means by “six.”
Character developments
- Obito is shaken by Shinji’s power and torn between distrust of Zetsu and uncertainty about Shinji’s intentions. He ultimately believes Zetsu, at least for now.
- Black Zetsu presents himself as wounded and loyal to Obito, manipulating Obito’s doubts to keep him focused on the plan to revive Kaguya.
- Shinji is confident and untroubled: he has no elaborate scheme and is content to wait, though his system’s missions give him unusual goals.
- Hikari remains composed and absorbed in her book, while Kurotsuchi is quick to answer Shinji’s question for herself.
Themes
- Manipulation and trust: Zetsu uses emotional appeals and suspicion to influence Obito, while Obito struggles to decide whom to trust.
- Destiny disrupted: Shinji’s rise defies the established pattern of Indra and Asura’s reincarnations, unsettling even Zetsu.
- Power and control: The looming plans to revive Kaguya contrast with Shinji’s ability to wait confidently and let others make the next move.
- Comic tonal contrast: Grand plans involving the world’s chakra and Kaguya sit alongside Shinji’s irreverent thoughts and mundane banter in the laboratory.
Character interactions
- Zetsu appeals to Obito’s memories and feelings, portraying himself as a betrayed companion and casting doubt on Kabuto.
- Obito challenges Zetsu about his loyalty to Madara, then turns the conversation toward Shinji’s unexplained inaction.
- Shinji’s casual question to Hikari—and Kurotsuchi’s mistaken assumption that it was directed at her—provides a light comic interlude amid the chapter’s larger conflict.
