Background / History

Madara saved Obito’s life and passed on his knowledge through the Sharingan, including Yin–Yang Release, Uchiha techniques, forbidden techniques, and instructions for Impure World Reincarnation. This inheritance also concealed a means of domination: Madara planted a cursed seal in Obito’s heart that Obito could not remove himself 146 159 168.

Rin Nohara’s death drove Obito’s revenge against Kirigakure. He blamed the village for sealing the Three-Tails inside her and deliberately left the beast within Yagura while controlling the Mizukage, using Kirigakure as an outlet for his anger rather than immediately extracting its tailed beast 59.

Under the name “Madara,” Obito helped Itachi destroy the Uchiha clan in exchange for Itachi joining his organization. During the massacre, he defeated Root operatives competing for the clan’s Sharingan and took most of the eyes. Konoha’s leadership later suspected that he was also responsible for the Nine-Tails attack and the Fourth Hokage’s death 33 46 73.

Appearance

  • Swirl Mask: Conceals his face and exposes a single Sharingan. Neji’s Byakugan cannot see through it; its material is not confirmed 59 146.
  • Akatsuki cloak: Wears a black cloak patterned with red clouds 59.
  • Modified body: Half his body is made from Hashirama cells, supporting his Wood Release and extraordinary healing 37 149.
  • Revealed face: Removes his mask publicly after admitting his identity to Minato and Kakashi 159.
  • Later eyes: Transplants a Rinnegan into his left socket while retaining his Kamui-bearing Mangekyō Sharingan 149 150.

Personality

Obito treats people as possessions and resources. He calls Yagura his “pet,” regards Kirigakure’s suffering as entertainment, and attacks its defenders without the restraint imposed on shinobi protecting their own village. His willingness to kill Isobu rather than let Neji claim the beast illustrates how readily he destroys what he cannot retain 59 60 71.

His confidence is backed by extensive preparation. He stockpiles replacement Sharingan, secretly sabotages Nagato’s transplanted limbs, and deliberately misrepresents Kamui’s absorption speed to encourage tactical mistakes. He also exaggerates his battle with Neji when describing it to Akatsuki 78 123 149.

Despite claiming to have severed his bonds, Obito loses composure when Sasuke confronts him about Rin and his past relationship with Minato’s family. His ambition to control the Infinite Tsukuyomi himself coexists with fear of Madara’s hidden influence; his final realization is that Madara manipulated him much as he manipulated Nagato 77 159 169.

Abilities & Skills

Kamui

Kamui provides access to a separate dimension, combining evasive intangibility with transportation and storage 59 149.

  • Intangibility: Allows shuriken and other attacks to pass through his body. Byakugan users still perceive him at his apparent location 59.
  • Transportation: Moves himself, allies, captives, and enormous targets—including much of the Ten-Tails—into the Kamui Dimension 95 140 141 161.
  • Combat combinations: Uses spatial distortion and pulling effects to strengthen Wood Release and feed enemies into Fire Release attacks 60 150.
  • Absorption vulnerability: Must become tangible to absorb a target, although the absorption itself is exceptionally fast 123.
  • Protection limit: Cannot extend his intangibility to another person, complicating battles while wearing Tobi 122.
  • Counters: Kakashi’s possession of the other Sharingan gives opponents a way to exploit Kamui. Konan also prepares sustained explosions around the limits of his intangibility 99 146.

Sharingan Genjutsu

Obito’s eye power can suppress both jinchūriki and their tailed beasts 59 127.

  • Controls Yagura and the Three-Tails for years, indirectly governing Kirigakure through the Mizukage 59 73.
  • Overwhelms Killer B and the Eight-Tails after binding them with Wood Release 127.
  • Subdues Kabuto for interrogation and captures Kinkaku and Ginkaku 146.
  • Places the exhausted Konan under genjutsu rather than immediately killing her and risking an emotional surge from Nagato 150.
  • Mei successfully breaks his control over Yagura. Hidden Mist also restricts his Sharingan’s visibility 59 61.

Izanagi

Izanagi erases unfavorable events and makes favorable outcomes real, letting Obito survive apparent hits and reappear in advantageous positions 124.

  • Duration: His Hashirama-cell body allows one activation to last five minutes 124.
  • Cost: Consumes the sight of the Sharingan used to activate it 27 149.
  • Offensive use: Converts Jiraiya’s apparent Rasengan hit into an opportunity to ambush Hiruzen 124.
  • Repeated use: Defeats Konan’s endurance-based trap by retreating to replace a blinded eye from his stockpile 148 149.

Wood Release

Hashirama cells give Obito powerful Wood Release, further amplified by Tobi’s biological armor 37 66 70.

  • Wood Thorn Technique: Produces branching spikes that impale defenders; used to kill Hiruzen and Rasa 59 124 125.
  • Super Wood Thorn Technique: Pierces Isobu’s shell and multiplies through his body, killing the Three-Tails 71.
  • Hōbi Technique: Creates a demon-faced shield that withstands Neji’s crimson Rasenshuriken 70.
  • Wood Golem Technique: Produces an enormous Senju Buddha Statue, taller than a tailed beast, with numerous arms and Five Elements attacks 70.
  • Wood Dragon: Binds the Eight-Tails before Obito subjects beast and jinchūriki to genjutsu 127.
  • Limitations: His wooden giant requires active direction and is overpowered by Neji’s independently fighting, regenerative Hamura Stone Statue 71.

Fire Release

Obito uses large-scale fire attacks, including Fire Release: Blast Wave Wild Dance, with Kamui’s spatial distortion strengthening their reach 60 70 150.

  • Engulfs streets and draws nearby shinobi toward the flames 60.
  • Burns away Hidden Mist, though Kirigakure’s Water Release users repeatedly restore it 60.
  • Incinerates Konan’s bladed paper attacks 150.
  • Can be countered by powerful Water Release or Neji’s Divine Vacuum Strike 60 70.

Hashirama-Cell Healing and Yin–Yang Release

His modified body provides powerful healing and supports biological manipulation 149.

  • Replaces a blinded Sharingan on the spot, with Hashirama-cell regeneration completing the transplant 149.
  • Uses Yin–Yang Release, the Demonic Statue, and Hashirama cells to create a special White Zetsu superior to a Hashirama clone as a reincarnation sacrifice 147.
  • Secretly alters Nagato’s transplanted limbs, later activating black growths and spikes that immobilize him 149.

Impure World Reincarnation

Obito inherits a crude version from Madara, then copies the improved technique when Kabuto reincarnates Madara 146 150.

  • Uses a specially cultivated White Zetsu sacrifice to restore Madara at his physical peak 147.
  • Reanimates Nagato and forces him to direct Akatsuki operations 150.
  • Commands Madara and Nagato during the invasion of Konoha 151.
  • Critical flaw: A reincarnated shinobi who knows the reverse seals can release the summoning contract. Madara exploits this to escape Obito’s control 168.

Rinnegan

Obito acquires his Rinnegan through transplantation, not a documented natural awakening 150.

  • Shinra Tensei: Repels Jiraiya and the toad sages’ combined fire attack 152.
  • Preta Path: Absorbs Naruto’s senjutsu-powered Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan without apparent difficulty 152.
  • Demonic Statue control: Directs the statue’s revival using Kinkaku and Ginkaku’s Nine-Tails chakra 150.
  • Ten-Tails sealing potential: Believes one Rinnegan is sufficient to perform Six Paths: Ten-Tails Coffin Seal, but never completes his intended transformation 150 169.
  • Rinne Rebirth: Forced to resurrect Madara at the cost of his own life 168 169.
  • Mental burden: The transplanted eye’s chakra and will nearly corrupt his sense of self, preventing him from safely taking both eyes 150.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Replacement Sharingan stockpile — Stores at least several dozen eyes in individual glass containers inside the Kamui Dimension, enabling repeated Izanagi use 148 149.
  • Tobi biological armor — A special White Zetsu that wraps around his body and amplifies Wood Release 66 70 122.
  • Six Paths Tools — Uses them to seal Kinkaku and Ginkaku, then feeds the tools and their captives to the Demonic Statue 146 150.
  • Wood Release and Uzumaki technique scroll — Gives Nagato a large scroll to develop the abilities enabled by his transplanted limbs 77.
  • Kunai — Uses one to kill Konan after defeating her 150.

Relationships

  • Rin Nohara — Her death motivates his revenge against Kirigakure. His final conscious thought returns to her 59 169.
  • Madara Uchiha — Savior, teacher, and hidden controller. Obito tries to take over Madara’s plan and later dismiss his reanimation; Madara answers by forcing him to perform Rinne Rebirth 77 146 168 169.
  • Minato Namikaze — Former teacher. Sasuke’s accusations about Obito’s treatment of Minato and his wife provoke the public confession of his identity 159.
  • Kakashi Hatake — A figure from his past who possesses his other Mangekyō Sharingan. Kakashi is stunned by his unmasking and later gives the eye to Naruto as partial atonement for Obito’s actions 99 159 179.
  • Nagato / Pain — Strategic partner turned intended victim. Obito restores his body while planting a hidden failsafe, kills him for the Rinnegan, and reanimates him as a subordinate 74 77 149 150.
  • Konan — Distrustful opponent who prepares an enormous explosive trap to protect Nagato. Obito defeats and kills her 74 146 148 150.
  • Yagura Karatachi — Controlled Mizukage whom Obito treats as a “pet” and uses to punish Kirigakure 59.
  • Neji Hyuga — Rival who obstructs his tailed-beast captures and eventually forces him and Madara to retreat together 70 71 161.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Hostile clansman who identifies him publicly as a traitor and prevents him from recovering all the Ten-Tails’ severed portions 159 161.
  • Itachi Uchiha — Massacre accomplice and contractual ally. Obito later refuses to assist him against Sasuke, considering their agreement complete 33 141.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Captive technical expert used to improve reincarnation preparations. Kabuto’s knowledge of the Rinnegan makes Obito privately resolve to kill him once his work is finished 146 147.
  • Zetsu — Intelligence and logistical support. White Zetsu track targets and attempt impersonation-based provocations; Black Zetsu supports progress toward the Infinite Tsukuyomi regardless of who leads it 61 77 84.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Kirigakure and the Three-Tails

  • After Mei breaks Yagura’s genjutsu, Obito attacks Kirigakure to reclaim him and the Three-Tails. The defenders use Water Release and Hidden Mist to delay him while Yagura retreats 59 60.
  • Withdraws unnoticed through Kamui and orders White Zetsu to locate the Mizukage. He returns wearing biological armor 61 65 66.
  • Neji interrupts his capture of Isobu and defeats his wooden giant. Obito kills the Three-Tails to deny Neji a complete capture, takes a severed tail, and escapes 70 71.

Exposure and the Feigned-Death Strategy

  • Reports Neji’s Rinnegan-like powers to Nagato and recommends accelerating the tailed-beast hunt 74.
  • Once the Five Great Nations learn of Akatsuki’s plans, attempts to provoke war using White Zetsu impersonations. The villages’ restraint prevents the scheme from succeeding 84 86.
  • Proposes faking Akatsuki’s destruction to lower the nations’ guard. During the allied offensive, uses Izanagi to kill Hiruzen, Rasa, and numerous jōnin 100 124 125.
  • Later resumes capture operations, personally binding and sealing the reborn Three-Tails 140.

Break with Nagato

  • With only the Nine-Tails left to capture, judges a direct attack on Konoha too dangerous and considers Kinkaku and Ginkaku’s chakra as a substitute 145.
  • Captures Kabuto and prepares a peak-strength reincarnation of Madara before confronting Nagato for the Rinnegan 146 147 148.
  • Survives Konan’s explosive ocean through Kamui, Izanagi, and replacement eyes. Activates his sabotage of Nagato’s body, kills both opponents, and takes one Rinnegan 148 149 150.

Konoha Invasion and Unmasking

  • Invades with controlled reanimations of Madara and Nagato. Assigns Madara to occupy Hashirama while he pursues the Nine-Tails 150 151.
  • Sasuke publicly names him, and Obito admits his identity before Minato and Kakashi 159.
  • After Neji dismembers the revived Ten-Tails, transports its main portion into Kamui. Sasuke prevents him from collecting the rest, and he escapes with Madara under cover of a dust cloud 161.

Death and the Fate of His Eyes

  • Tries to dismiss Madara once the Ten-Tails begins recovering. Madara releases the reincarnation contract, activates Obito’s cursed seal, and forces him to resurrect him 168.
  • Dies from Rinne Rebirth, recognizing the parallel between Madara’s treatment of him and his own treatment of Nagato 169.
  • Madara takes his remaining Mangekyō Sharingan and assigns Tobi to use it. Kakashi later transfers Obito’s left eye to Naruto; Neji also uses an eye derived from Obito’s power and develops it further during the battle against Kaguya 169 179 185.
