History

Enforcing the Main Family’s authority

Keisuke first confronts Neji over his friendship with Sasuke Uchiha. Calling the Uchiha a cursed clan, he orders Neji to stop associating with Sasuke and threatens him with the Caged Bird Seal. Neji outwardly submits while privately growing more determined to take revenge 15.

When Neji later explains that he accepted Sasuke’s challenge to defend the Hyuga’s honor, Keisuke rejects the justification: a Branch Family member, he insists, has no right to represent the clan. He also denies that Neji’s relationship to the clan head grants him special standing. Neji subsequently recalls that Keisuke activated the seal against him 20 34.

Visit to Kirigakure

Keisuke leads a sixteen-member delegation to visit the Kaguya Clan. The party includes four Jonin, counting Keisuke himself; his own squad consists of Neji and two female Branch Family attendants. Before departure, he disapproves of Hinata addressing Neji as “Big Brother,” viewing it as a breach of Main–Branch Family hierarchy 49.

In the Land of Water, Keisuke reunites warmly with Taketori Yoshiyuki after three years apart. He says he had intended to visit the previous year, but Hyuga Hiroshi had taken the opportunity instead. At the Kaguya compound, clan head Taketori Yoshisue welcomes him personally, and the two speak privately for an hour before the banquet 50 51.

Keisuke permits his Branch Family escorts to explore Kirigakure, assuring them that the authorities know about their visit. He then spends successive days with the Kaguya, sometimes traveling outside the village and returning late at night. Unknown to him, Yoshisue has instructed Yoshiyuki to keep him occupied while the clan prepares its coup 51 52 53.

Coup, encirclement, and escape

After the coup fails, Keisuke discovers that Kirigakure forces have surrounded the Kaguya compound. Yoshiyuki admits that the Kaguya deliberately drew him into their predicament, then falsely implicates both the Hyuga and Konoha in the rebellion. Keisuke angrily denies involvement and protests the betrayal of their clans’ longstanding friendship 56 57.

The Hyuga’s Byakugan reveals foreign chakra around Fourth Mizukage Yagura’s brain. Keisuke recognizes an opening in the division between Yagura’s followers and Mei Terumi’s faction. He publicly exposes the genjutsu and challenges Ao to verify it with his transplanted Byakugan. Ao confirms the claim, prompting Mei to release Yagura from the illusion 57 58 59.

When Obito arrives and attacks Kirigakure, Keisuke uses the ensuing battle and Mei’s Hidden Mist Technique to order a breakout. The delegation escapes through a Byakugan-identified weakness in the encirclement. At a heavily guarded dock the following morning, he abandons an immediate sea escape and withdraws the group to concealment 60 61.

Neji’s rebellion and death

While hiding in a minor clan’s residence, Keisuke sends Neji to buy provisions. Neji secretly poisons the food and drink after taking an antidote. Keisuke suspects poisoning and makes Neji eat a bun first, but the test fails to reveal the danger. About half an hour later, the delegation is incapacitated 62.

Keisuke condemns Neji as a traitor and attempts to activate the Caged Bird Seal. Neji stops him by kicking him away and breaking his wrist. Even afterward, Keisuke invokes the Branch Family’s duty, the seal’s supposed permanence, and Hizashi’s coerced sacrifice to insist that Neji cannot escape the hierarchy 62 63.

Neji drains Keisuke’s chakra, reducing him to a dried husk, and discovers that he can also absorb Byakugan eye power. Keisuke’s death becomes both an act of revenge and a breakthrough in Neji’s pursuit of the Tenseigan. Neji later counts him among the Main Family members he has killed 63 64 110.

Personality

Keisuke treats hereditary status as unquestionable. He denies Neji the right to speak for the Hyuga, objects to Hinata’s familial affection toward a Branch Family member, and uses the Caged Bird Seal to enforce obedience. His hostility toward Sasuke is explicitly rooted in prejudice against the Uchiha 15 20 49.

Outside the clan hierarchy, he can be warm and sociable, greeting his Kaguya friends with laughter and affection.
