Genin faced little danger in peacetime. At least, that was the case for Team 3 under Might Guy.
They completed a D-rank mission every morning. In the afternoon, Might Guy decided whether to take another mission or train, depending on the circumstances.
When it came to training, he focused on teaching Rock Lee taijutsu. There was little he could do for Neji and Tenten.
He could only spar with Neji from time to time and put Tenten through some physical conditioning.
As the days passed, Neji noticed clear changes. Most obvious was the explosive increase in his Byakugan's eye power, while his chakra rose along with it.
The increase in eye power and chakra brought a corresponding surge in Neji's strength.
"Twenty kilometers!" Neji was very pleased with the result of his test.
Twenty kilometers was not the radius of his full 360-degree field of vision, of course, but the straight-line distance he could see in one direction.
This was how his Byakugan had changed three months after the Cloned Limb transplant.
That distance was several times what Neji had been capable of before the transplant.
How much further... until the Tenseigan? Neji silently asked himself at the Training Ground.
As a member of the Ōtsutsuki Clan, Otsutsuki Toneri had evolved his eyes directly into the Tenseigan after transplanting the Byakugan.
Neji's bloodline was nowhere near comparable to Otsutsuki Toneri's, so he felt he would need quite some time for his eyes to transform gradually.
"This feeling is incredible!" The corners of Neji's mouth rose. Words could not express his joy.
Perhaps as my eye power grows, I can turn some of my ideas for the Gentle Fist into reality, Neji thought.
Neji had already worked out a more advanced form of the Gentle Fist in his mind, but the limitations of his Byakugan's eye power and his own chakra kept him from putting it into practice.
Kaguya Otsutsuki was an excellent example of a more advanced Gentle Fist. Neji simply had to work toward her level.
"You really are here." Just as Neji was basking in his delight, a familiar voice rang out.
"What brings you here?" Neji asked curiously.
While testing his Byakugan earlier, Neji had seen Sasuke two training grounds over, using his Sharingan to watch other people train.
There was an entire training ground between them.
"Hmph!" Sasuke snorted. "Weren't you the one who told me to visit the village's training grounds more often and learn a few things while I was at it?"
"Heh, wasn't that more or less your own idea?" Neji refused to take the blame.
"That doesn't matter. Anyway, you've noticed the changes in your eyes, haven't you?" Sasuke got to the point.
"You noticed them?" Neji asked in return.
Sasuke activated his Sharingan. "It's still in its two-tomoe form, but its eye power has increased a lot, improving its insight and copying ability along with it. My chakra has also increased by the same proportion as my eye power."
Sasuke looked very pleased with his changes. His strength had been increasing rapidly lately.
"What about you? How does it feel?" Sasuke asked.
"Of course. My situation is much the same as yours." Neji nodded.
Seeing that no one else was around, Sasuke asked curiously, "Then do you know how much longer it will take to reach that Tenseigan you mentioned?"
Neji shook his head. "Not yet. My Byakugan's eye power hasn't peaked. I might only know once it reaches the point where it can't increase any further."
Sasuke nodded and brought up another matter. "Yesterday, I went to look at the Stone Tablet passed down through our Uchiha Clan."
"What did it say?" Neji only knew the general contents of the Stone Tablet.
What he knew was a summarized version, not the precise wording of its records.
"Much like your Hyuga Clan's Stone Tablet, all I could read was the origin and history of our Uchiha Clan. There's still a considerable portion I can't see," Sasuke answered.
After seeing the Stone Tablet in the Shrine's basement the night before, Sasuke had become utterly convinced by what Neji had told him.
"Come to think of it, your eye power seems to far surpass mine. At least, that's how it looks when it comes to deciphering the Stone Tablets." Confusion showed on Sasuke's face.
He asked, "Can the other members of your Hyuga Clan also read the later sections about the Rinnegan and Tenseigan?"
Neji shook his head. "You're overthinking it. Our Hyuga Stone Tablet is the same as your Uchiha Clan's. The stronger your eye power, the more you can decipher. I'm the only one who can read the later sections."
"Doesn't that mean your eye power rivals the Mangekyō Sharingan?" Sasuke looked at him in surprise.
"Heh, my eye power isn't weak, but all it really does is let me see farther. In terms of usefulness, that's nowhere near the Mangekyō Sharingan," Neji said.
"You know something about the Mangekyō Sharingan too?" Sasuke felt that Neji knew a little too much.
"I'm not an ordinary member of the Hyuga Clan. My father was the current clan head's younger brother. Isn't it only natural for me to know a little more?" Neji made up an excuse on the spot.
Seeing the obvious eagerness in Sasuke's eyes, Neji said, "Since you want to know so badly, I'll tell you. Legend has it that when members of the Uchiha Clan awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan, they gain two special dōjutsu."
"Special dōjutsu?" Sasuke frowned. "Do you know what they are?"
Neji snorted. "How would I know? Only the person who awakens those eyes knows what their dōjutsu are. It's like drawing a lottery ticket. You could get anything."
Sasuke's expression darkened. "Then when I face Uchiha Itachi in the future, I'll have to watch out for his two dōjutsu at all times?"
"What do you think?" Neji asked in return.
Sasuke had never hated the Uchiha as much as he did that day. The ability to copy all sorts of ninjutsu was already absurdly powerful. He did not dare imagine how many techniques Uchiha Itachi had copied over the years, let alone the two mysterious dōjutsu Itachi possessed as a wielder of the Mangekyō Sharingan.
"And that's not all. Legend has it that after awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan, members of the Uchiha Clan also awaken the clan's true power—Susanoo!" Seeing Sasuke's dark expression, Neji twisted the knife.
"What's that?" Sasuke's face remained grim. The name alone told him instinctively that it would not be easy to deal with.
"It's a powerful dōjutsu said to possess absolute defense and the might of a god of destruction!" Neji said.
Sasuke remained silent for a long time after hearing that, his face dark, his thoughts unreadable.
"If I finish that S-rank Wind Release technique you mentioned, could it break through Susanoo?" Sasuke asked.
Neji gave it some serious thought. "I doubt it. According to the Hyuga Clan's records, Susanoo is extremely difficult to deal with. An ordinary Rasenshuriken could probably only handle one of its more basic forms. Once Susanoo changes into its later forms, the Rasenshuriken won't be enough."
"Susanoo can even change forms?!" Sasuke lost his composure. His face was thunderous.
"That's right." Neji was delighted by Sasuke's grim expression. "As eye power increases, Susanoo's form changes along with it. At first, it's just ribs and a skeleton. Later, it gradually grows flesh and develops armor, wielding chakra weapons over ten meters long, or even dozens or hundreds of meters long."
Seeing the smile on Neji's face, Sasuke grew suspicious. "You're not lying to me, are you? Chakra weapons dozens or hundreds of meters long? Wouldn't that make Susanoo over a hundred meters tall? That's bigger than an ordinary hill."
