Ch. 1Holy Shit, I'm Lorgar?
Key plot points and events
- A Warp Storm scatters the Emperor’s twenty-one Primarch embryos across the galaxy. The one marked XVII lands on Colchis, where Kor Phaeron kills the people who find it and takes the child to raise.
- Much later, a modern Warhammer player suddenly awakens in Lorgar’s body in 30,856, shortly before the Emperor’s arrival and the Great Crusade.
- Recognizing Kor Phaeron as a Chaos agent, the newcomer kills him with a single punch. The guards assume Kor tried to assassinate Lorgar and dispose of the body without question.
- Lorgar reviews his memories: he has recently united Colchis after the six-year Schism War, taking the capital, Vhaladesh, and finally capturing Gahvalah when its protective storm inexplicably parted.
- Deciding to use his foreknowledge to oppose Chaos, he resolves to find and kill Erebus.
Character developments
- Lorgar / the newcomer: Shocked to discover he is a Primarch, he quickly shifts from panic to action. He rejects the Chaos influence surrounding his upbringing and intends to lead a “true” Word Bearers against the Chaos Gods.
- Kor Phaeron: Revealed as a Chaos-corrupted figure who helped raise Lorgar. He recognizes that Lorgar’s soul has changed and attempts to attack, but is killed before he can explain further.
- The guards: They show pragmatic loyalty, quickly inventing a harmless explanation for Kor Phaeron’s death and carrying out Lorgar’s order.
Significant themes
- Fate versus agency: Lorgar knows the grim path his life is supposed to take, but believes he can change it.
- Corruption and resistance: The chapter establishes Chaos’s early influence on Colchis while positioning the new Lorgar against it.
- Identity and foreknowledge: A modern fan’s knowledge of the setting collides with the reality of inhabiting a Primarch’s body.
Character interactions
- Lorgar’s confrontation with Kor Phaeron ends abruptly in violence, as Kor senses the change in him and makes a failed attempt on his life.
- The guards protect Lorgar politically as well as physically, treating Kor’s death as an attempted assassination rather than questioning their leader.
- Alone afterward, Lorgar weighs his new circumstances and turns his attention to Erebus as his next target.
