Background / History
Mu En has governed Shrek Academy for two hundred years. His authority is such that its senior leaders trust and carry out his decisions without questioning his ability to lead 22.
A century before the Body Sect invasion, he fought and killed Du Bisou, Du Busi’s elder brother and the sect’s previous master. Although the battle injured him, it did not cause the lasting damage to his vital essence that others believed it had 22 31.
His paralysis actually resulted from attempting to refine a Dragon Core to advance further. Vicious energy concealed within the core damaged his vital essence. Embarrassed that refining a treasure had incapacitated a Limit Douluo, he publicly attributed his condition to the battle with Du Bisou 22.
An earlier experience of deception at Ye Xishui’s hands also shaped his later caution. He began investigating women who approached valued juniors and students, discovering spies sent to steal intelligence, obtain their bloodlines, or conduct assassinations 24.
During Zhang Lexuan’s youth, Mu En avenged her murdered family by wiping out the nobles responsible. She had secured his intervention by pledging lifelong service to Shrek and agreeing to become Bei Bei’s child bride. Mu En later told her not to take those conditions seriously and acknowledged that she and Bei Bei were unsuitable for each other 10.
Appearance
- Usual condition: A deeply wrinkled, stooped old man in gray cloth robes, with drooping eyelids and dim eyes; generally rests in a reclining chair 20.
- When asserting his power: His golden eyes become majestic, and his presence evokes a great white dragon looking down upon the world 22.
- Restored prime: Appears to be a handsome man in his forties, tall and powerfully built, with defined muscles and an upright bearing 35.
- Battle transformation: His body turns golden and becomes covered in golden dragon scales 35.
- After the invasion: Half of his graying hair turns lifeless ash-gray, and his golden pupils dim as he returns to his stooped condition 36.
Personality
Mu En combines a gentle manner with overwhelming authority. Even Xuan Zi, normally occupied with food and drink, sits upright and behaves seriously in his presence. His restraint is deliberate rather than timid: he avoids needless escalation while remaining capable of decisive violence 20 31 36.
Shrek’s survival governs his decisions. He conceals his continued existence and limits his activity to preserve his dwindling vitality, fearing that the academy’s departments will fracture after his death. His ideal successor must be strong enough to unite Shrek internally and defend it against the Sun Moon Empire 32 35.
His protection is also calculating. He approves allowing Chen An to choose his eventual educational path, but simultaneously investigates the boy’s background and seeks to shape his loyalties through companionship and ideological guidance. For Mu En, nurturing talent must produce a future defender of Shrek, not merely a powerful graduate 21 22 24.
He remains proud of his reputation. Rather than admit the true cause of his paralysis, he allows others to believe Du Bisou inflicted it. Beneath his years of caution, he identifies with the uncompromising ideal of Ruler of the World—openly subduing enemies through absolute power 22 35.

- Yan Shaozhe — Eldest disciple and Martial Soul Department dean. Entrusted with developing Chen An’s attachment to Shrek; Mu En considers him somewhat narrow-minded but resourceful in smaller matters 20 24.

- Xuan Zi — Shrek’s second-strongest expert and a senior subordinate. Receives responsibility for chairing Sea God Pavilion meetings during Mu En’s seclusion 20 36.
- Elder Song — Senior Pavilion elder assigned to guard Chen An. Later appointed to assist Xuan Zi alongside Lin Huiqun 34 36.
- Bei Bei — Great-great-grandson. Mu En believes his partial inheritance of the family bloodline permits Super Douluo cultivation but not Limit Douluo, making him unsuitable for the succession Mu En envisions 32.
- Zhang Lexuan — Beneficiary of his intervention and an earlier succession candidate. Mu En values her temperament but ultimately considers her chances of reaching Limit Douluo too slim 9 10 32.
- Ma Xiaotao — Grand-disciple through Yan Shaozhe. Her Evil Fire Phoenix’s flaw makes her another unlikely Limit Douluo successor 26 32.

- Du Bisou — Former Body Sect master whom Mu En killed a century earlier; Mu En uses their battle as the public explanation for his paralysis 22 31.

- Ren Xue / Qian Renxue — Initially an unidentified companion of Chen An. Mu En accepts Wang Tao’s report and approves her enrollment, unaware that Electrolux fabricated the memories used to establish her background 23 24.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Planning Shrek’s Succession
Mu En convenes an emergency Sea God Pavilion meeting over Chen An’s discovery. When the Martial Soul and Soul Tool departments compete to claim the boy, he rules that Chen An should concentrate on cultivation first and choose his own path later 20 21.
He supports a development plan emphasizing nutritious food, foundational training, and Titled Douluo instruction rather than medicines that could damage Chen An’s foundation. Wang Tao’s investigation covers all 138 residents of Qinghe Village and confirms the boy’s gratitude toward those who helped him 22.
Ren Xue’s unexplained origins prompt a covert memory search. Electrolux supplies a false history, which Wang Tao believes. Mu En consequently approves her place in the planned Monster Class, both for her sacred martial soul’s usefulness against Evil Soul Masters and to give Chen An a familiar companion 22 23 24.
The Body Sect Invasion
Mu En intervenes after Du Busi defeats Xuan Zi, striking the invader with the Golden Tree’s power. He argues that Shrek accepted Chen An first and offers Du Busi opportunities to withdraw 30 31 32.
When the Body Sect storms the academy, Mu En fights Du Busi while directing Xuan Zi to stop the other attackers. Elder Song, positioned in advance, protects Chen An on Sea God Island 33 34.
Du Busi’s threat to detonate his Soul Core and destroy Shrek City forces Mu En to restore his true body to its prime. With that threat neutralized, they agree to let their followers decide the contest and rescue endangered fighters on the condition that those rescued cannot rejoin the battle 35 36.
Elder Song’s defeat of Du Weiming secures Shrek’s victory, leaving Chen An at the academy. The cost is severe: Shrek loses two Titled Douluos, numerous students and teachers are killed or injured, and Mu En spends a substantial portion of his remaining vitality 36.
Seclusion and the Failure of His Plans
Mu En retreats to the chamber beneath the Golden Tree, delegating Pavilion leadership to Xuan Zi and academy administration to Yan Shaozhe and Xian Lin’er 36.
The Youth Class he established to strengthen Chen An’s attachment instead exposes the boy to hostility from classmates who blame him for the invasion’s losses. Mu En remains unaware of this reversal while stabilizing his vitality 38.
Chen An later disappears, provoking a desperate response from elders conscious of Mu En’s investment in him. The boy has actually escaped with the Sky Dream Ice Silkworm’s help and intends to seek the Body Sect, undermining Mu En’s succession plan 48 50.
