Background / History

Hidden inheritance

Before Tang Wulin’s birth, the Golden Dragon King’s destructive power threatens to break through its restraints and kill him. Tang San saves his son by transforming both inherited Martial Souls into seals: the Blue Silver Emperor binds the dragon’s will from within, while the Clear Sky Hammer suppresses its physical power 1.

The protection costs Wulin the complete expression of his twin inheritance. Only a plain black hammer can manifest outwardly; the Blue Silver Emperor survives within his bloodline but cannot manifest, acquire Soul Rings, or produce Soul Skills. Wulin grows up unaware of the purpose of these restraints 1.

Awakening and apprenticeship

Raised in Aolai City by Tang Ziran and Lang Yue, Wulin awakens his hammer at six and enters Red Mountain Academy’s Soul Master Class with level-five innate soul power. Its unimpressive appearance draws teasing, while internal heat and heaviness initially make meditation difficult 3 4 5.

He rescues Na’er from would-be traffickers despite being kicked down and threatened with a dagger. After bringing her home, he declares himself her big brother; the family eventually allows her to stay 6 7 12. Tang Ziran subsequently teaches him that courage must be accompanied by judgment rather than reckless confrontation 8.

When Wulin learns that his family cannot easily afford a Soul Spirit, he agrees to study forging. Mang Tian accepts him after a grueling hammering test reveals exceptional endurance and determination. Over three years, workshop labor develops his craft, strength, and savings, although it reduces the time available for Soul Power cultivation 9 10 11 13.

Becoming a Soul Master

Wulin refuses to purchase an unsuitable random Soul Spirit merely to advance quickly. By nine, he has saved 50,000 Federation Credits; his parents contribute another 20,000, completing the amount needed for targeted selection 13 15.

At the Spirit Pagoda, an inconspicuous ant spirit approaches him independently. Its qualities of endurance, weight, and burden-bearing suit his hammer unusually well. Their fusion gives him his first white Soul Ring, followed by Thousand-Weight Fall and a painful transformation that leaves him securely at level eleven 19 20 21 22. He later names the spirit Golden Jun 24.

Na’er’s departure and forging breakthroughs

Na’er leaves after recovering her memories and learning that she has duties elsewhere. Wulin searches their shared haunts throughout Aolai City, then spends a week withdrawn and distracted. Her absence affects both school and forging; he later vows to find her 25 30.

A sparring victory over Wan Yunchao helps ease his grief. Mang Tian also assures him that moving to Eastsea City will not end their apprenticeship, then challenges him to achieve Thousand Refinement 26. Wulin succeeds with heavy silver and subsequently binds it to his Martial Soul through Blood Sacrifice, gaining the stacked hammer effect 30 31 32.

Eastsea Academy

Wulin travels alone to Eastsea City and enrolls in first-year Class Five, sharing dormitory room 205 with Yun Xiao, Zhou Changxi, and Xie Xie. Zhou’s trampling of a quilt embroidered by Na’er provokes Wulin into punching him through a window. Still enraged, Wulin misinterprets Xie Xie’s movement of his belongings and attacks him as well 34 35 36 37 38.

Seeking income for his expenses and compensation payments, Wulin passes both the rank-one and rank-two blacksmith assessments. The association buys his finished component for 10,000 Federation Credits, which he gives Xie Xie toward repayment 40 44 45.

Their rematch in Eastsea Park exposes Wulin’s lack of formal combat training. Xie Xie gains the upper hand and wounds his shoulder, but the injury triggers Wulin’s first golden-scaled transformation. Wulin wins with a powerful punch and later carries Xie Xie back to the academy. Neither boy understands the transformation, and Wulin cannot reproduce it through meditation or a minor self-inflicted prick 48 49 50.

Appearance

By nine, Wulin has grown a head taller than children his age. His refined features, straight posture, and sturdy build reflect three years of workshop training rather than conspicuously bulky muscles 13.

  • Eyes: Bright black eyes, compared to freshly washed black jade 13.
  • Hands: Slender hands with calluses across the palms and knuckles 13.
  • Hidden markings: Fine golden patterns appear beneath his temples and along his spine during his post-fusion ordeal 22.
  • Transformed right arm: Closely packed golden scales, harder and longer nails, and slightly sharpened fingertips appear during the Eastsea Park fight 49.

Personality

Wulin’s ambition begins with protecting his parents and earning enough to feed his family well, rather than pursuing prestige. He accepts forging as a means of supporting his cultivation and takes pride in money earned through his own work 5 9 45.

He is persistent without being indiscriminately impatient. Although he pushes through painful training, he waits for a compatible Soul Spirit and spends hours understanding metal before applying his full strength. Forging becomes both a source of enjoyment and a refuge from the uncertainty of his new life in Eastsea City 10 13 28 43.

His protectiveness can override his judgment. He confronts armed adults to save Na’er, and grief over her departure contributes to his violent misreading of Xie Xie’s intentions. Nevertheless, he checks Xie Xie’s condition after knocking him unconscious and feels guilty about injuring him 6 37 49 50.

Wulin treats Golden Jun as a partner rather than merely a source of power. After fusion, his private worry is whether he can live up to the spirit’s trust; Na’er’s reassurance helps him accept that their choice was mutual 21.

Abilities & Skills

Star-Sinking Hammer

  • True origin: A restrained form of the Clear Sky Hammer, created to suppress the Golden Dragon King’s physical power 1.
  • Manifestation: Small, pitch-black, short, thick, and blunt, with weight far exceeding its appearance 3 4.
  • Development: Dark-gold markings become clearer after Soul Spirit fusion; silver-gray tidal patterns appear after the Blood Sacrifice 22 31.
  • Applications: Serves as both his combat weapon and forging hammer. Mang Tian recommends direct, weight-bearing strikes rather than elaborate maneuvering 11 24.
  • Limits: Its tremendous weight requires control. Wulin’s increased strength initially causes forging mistakes, while poor recovery between combat movements leaves openings for faster opponents 26 48.

Thousand-Weight Fall

  • Source: First Soul Skill, associated with his white Soul Ring and ant Soul Spirit 20 23.
  • Effect: Concentrates the hammer’s downward pressure into a compact impact rather than simply increasing arm strength 23.
  • Demonstrated power: Dents heavy iron, disrupts Wan Yunchao’s saber and balance, and briefly slows Xie Xie under its oppressive pressure 23 26 37.
  • Ground-strike application: Sends a shock through the ground to interfere with an approaching opponent 48 49.
  • Limits: Does not eliminate Wulin’s speed disadvantage; Xie Xie draws out a ground strike and attacks from the side 49.

Stacked Hammer

  • Origin: The “tide” property of his first Thousand-Refined heavy silver resonates with the hammer after their integration 30 31 32.
  • Effect: A primary strike produces two additional blows at the same point, accompanied by rapid afterimages and three distinct impact notes 32.
  • Permanence: The effect belongs to his Martial Soul rather than a separate tool and cannot be taken from him 32.
  • Limit: He must practice controlling the layered force before using it deliberately 32.

Physical Strength, Endurance, and Recovery

  • Completes Mang Tian’s initial 1,000-strike test at six, then continues hammering despite severe exhaustion 10 11.
  • Records striking-force readings of 483 kilograms left-handed and 543 kilograms right-handed after Soul Spirit fusion 27.
  • Recovers from raw, swollen hands overnight without the prescribed ointment; sleep repeatedly restores him after demanding workshop sessions 12 13.
  • Sustains ordinary blows unusually well and defeats Zhou Changxi with a punch without summoning his Martial Soul 37.
  • Has an enormous appetite, especially after exertion. Eating after the golden-scaled transformation eases his hunger and the tightness in his shoulder and arm 5 30 50.

Golden-Scaled Transformation

  • First trigger: A shoulder wound from Xie Xie’s Light Dragon Dagger, followed by a surge of internal heat 49.
  • Effects: His skin forces out the dagger; his right arm becomes scaled, intensely heavy, and powerful enough to knock Xie Xie unconscious with one punch 49.
  • Cost: The transformation quickly recedes, leaving Wulin weak enough to collapse 49.
  • Unresolved control: He recognizes that it is neither his Martial Soul nor Golden Jun, but cannot identify or reliably trigger it. Minor injury and meditation produce no response 49 50.
  • Safety concern: He agrees to Xie Xie’s warning not to use an uncontrolled ability on others 50.

Forging

  • Controls heating temperature, hammer rhythm, strike placement, and the alignment of a metal’s grain 14 42 43.
  • Produces precise Soul Guidance Mecha ankle joints and a functional heavy-silver knee-joint component 14 44.
  • Achieves Thousand Refinement by listening to the metal’s response and drawing out its inherent properties rather than merely repeating blows 27 28 30.
  • Uses whole-body coordination to channel strength from his legs, waist, and back into the hammer 28.
  • Holds official rank-two certification, allowing him to accept independent work 41 44.

Spiritual Focus and Combat Adaptation

  • Daily meditation and sustained forging concentration contribute to his spiritual-power reading of 38 18.
  • Studies opponents’ stance, weapon position, and footing before countering 26 48.
  • Adjusts against Xie Xie by watching footwork, reducing unnecessary movement, and conserving strikes for better openings 48.
  • Lacks formal combat training; his timing, follow-through, and ability to pin down agile opponents remain underdeveloped 45 48 49.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Star-Sinking Hammer — Summoned Martial Soul used for combat and forging; incorporates his first Thousand-Refined heavy silver 31.
  • Thousand-Refined Tungsten Steel Hammers — A pair weighing 40 kilograms each. Used during his association assessment instead of exposing his unusual Martial Soul hammer 42 43.
  • Heavy silver storage rings — Two gifts from Mang Tian. Store and retrieve objects through Wulin’s Soul Power and intent; their retained weight also supports daily training 33.
  • Na’er’s silver pendant — Left behind when she departs and passed to Wulin by Tang Ziran; its monetary value offers him little consolation 25.
  • Embroidered quilt — Features a small flower sewn by Na’er. Zhou Changxi’s deliberate trampling of it triggers the dormitory confrontation 36 37.
  • Soul Guidance Camera — Entrusted to him by Liu Yuxin to secretly photograph Wu Changkong; safely put away before his rematch with Xie Xie 47 48.

Relationships

  • Tang San — Biological father; sacrifices the complete expression of Wulin’s inherited Martial Souls to keep him alive 1.
  • Xiao Wu — Biological mother; witnesses the prenatal danger and grieves the cost of Tang San’s sealing plan 1.
  • Tang Ziran — Father who raises him; teaches self-reliance and caution, arranges his forging apprenticeship, and supports his first Soul Spirit purchase 8 9 15.
  • Lang Yue — Mother who raises him; supports his ambitions but fears the injuries and dangerous transformations they bring. Briefly begs him to abandon the Soul Master path after his collapse 11 22.
  • Na’er — Rescued child and younger sister within his household. Their bond includes his protection and her care during his injuries; her departure devastates him 6 11 25.
  • Mang Tian — Forging master and mentor. Provides demanding instruction, continued access to an Eastsea workshop, and practical equipment; refuses Cen Yue’s attempt to recruit Wulin 11 26 33 45.
  • Golden Jun — Soul Spirit and trusted partner. Approaches Wulin independently, fuses with his hammer, and becomes the recipient of his gratitude and concern 19 21 24.
  • Lin Ximeng — Red Mountain Academy teacher. Helps him overcome early meditation difficulties and provides his intermediate-academy recommendation 5 16 25.
  • Wan Yunchao — Competitive childhood classmate. Repeatedly challenges Wulin, but reluctantly acknowledges his ability after losing their Soul Master spar 13 26.
  • Xie Xie — Eastsea roommate and combat rival. Their hostility develops into grudging concern after Wulin carries him home and Xie warns him about the uncontrolled scales 45 49 50.
  • Yun Xiao — Quiet roommate who objects to Zhou’s bullying and later gives an account of the dormitory fight 36 38.
  • Zhou Changxi — Bullying roommate defeated by Wulin’s unpowered punch; subsequent victories and forging achievements make him reconsider Wulin’s strength 37 45 50.
  • Liu Yuxin — Helpful senior student who guides his registration and defends him against dismissive judgments 35 36.
  • Cen Yue — Blacksmith Association grandmaster who oversees his assessment, recognizes his talent, and unsuccessfully seeks to recruit him 41 44 45.
  • Wu Changkong — Class Five teacher whose severe warning about harsh training introduces Wulin to the academy’s demanding instruction 47.
