When he returned to Paradise Island, the place was already devastated. The tentacle the Eight-Tails had lost at the start lay motionless in the rubble beneath the stone steps.

Rustle! Black Zetsu rose from the ground. "They say a jinchūriki must pass through the Waterfall of Truth and purge the darkness within before confronting a tailed beast mentally, or the beast's dark consciousness will devour them!"
Madara smiled. "Do you think I need that?"
Black Zetsu said, "The Nine-Tails' darkness is nothing compared to yours. If anyone is going to be devoured, you will be the one devouring him. However..."
Madara asked, "However what?"
Black Zetsu said, "Good and evil are two sides of the same coin. If your malice is so powerful that it has no weaknesses, even a trace of goodwill could become an opening."

Madara considered it briefly. "Who do you think I am? How could someone like me be measured by such shallow definitions as good and evil? Evil never triumphs over justice because the victor is justice! Good or evil, I will redefine them through power!"
