Power Progression
Historical awakenings are placed before the Black Cursed Seal’s development; their chapter references identify where they are explained.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Historical Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan | 178 188 468 | His historical ocular power incorporated abilities from both his own and Izuna’s Mangekyō. Orochimaru describes his prime as approaching Indra’s strength. |
| Historical Rinnegan | 1 224 | Awakened both eyes late in life after implanting Hashirama’s cells. The awakening also allowed him to control the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. |
| Black Cursed Seal: State One — Mangekyō Sharingan | 140 162 311 | His consciousness awakens before Naruto’s and suppresses the host. He immediately uses the Sharingan to subdue the Nine-Tails. |
| Perfect Sage Mode | 153 | Reproduces senjutsu from the bodily memory of energy absorbed from Jiraiya. |
| Four-tailed Demon Fox Cloak | 157 | Uses Kurama’s chakra after his senjutsu is exhausted, overpowering Killer B in close combat and exchanging Tailed Beast Bombs. |
| Sage Cursed Fox Chakra Mode | 157 158 | Combines Sage Mode, the Black Cursed Seal, and Kurama’s chakra. Its immense output initially causes rapid exhaustion. |
| Nine-Tails Golden Body / Chakra Mode | 162 164 167 | Gains control of the Nine-Tails’ power after the internal battle against Kurama, Minato, and Kushina. Minato’s intervention permanently reserves 30% of the seal’s power for Naruto. |
| Black Cursed Seal: State Two — Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan; Perfect Susanoo | 162 165 166 188 | When Kabuto corners him with Sage Snake Poison, his Straight Tomoe awakens and he manifests Perfect Susanoo. |
| Black Cursed Seal: State Three — Pseudo-Rinnegan | 188 190 260 311 | Itachi’s Tsukuyomi provokes a rage-driven release of seal power. State Three grants Six Paths abilities, but not Rinne Rebirth, control of the Demonic Statue, or Limbo. |
| Power increase through Nagato’s chakra and vitality | 209 260 | Absorbs Nagato’s energy and visibly transforms. The additional chakra cannot replace the missing seal power needed for State Four. |
| Refined Sage-enhanced combat power | 241 247 250 | Develops Dark Curse Yin Lightning and large-scale Susanoo attacks using natural energy. Claims to have surpassed his former prime. |
| Renewed bodily control and unleashed cursed energy | 458 459 | Re-emerges during Sasuke’s confrontation with Naruto, takes complete control of the small body, and redistributes cursed energy into vapor clusters, rings, and clouds. |
| Emerging divine technique — Causality Severance | 459 | Itachi detects the technique awakening in “Māra Madara.” It can sever or strengthen causality; Madara intends to use it to change Infinite Tsukuyomi’s consequences. |
| Partial Ten-Tails absorption — new Six Paths form | 463 | Uses Six Paths: Ten-Tails Coffin Seal to absorb the beast’s severed arm rather than risk taking in its entire body. Gains thirteen Truth-Seeking Orbs. |
Background / History
Founding Konoha and the Eye of the Moon Plan
After Izuna’s death, Madara reconciled with the Senju and helped establish Konoha. He and Hashirama attempted to build peace through cooperation, but Madara eventually judged that approach a failure. When he called on the Uchiha to leave the village with him, none followed 184 224.
Madara interpreted the Uchiha stone tablet as a directive to unite Uchiha and Senju power, awaken the Rinnegan, revive the Ten-Tails, and cast Infinite Tsukuyomi. He believed a universal dream could end the conflicts created by unequal resources, competing interests, and the inseparability of love and hatred 224.
He controlled the Nine-Tails during his battle with Hashirama at the Valley of the End. Although defeated, he survived through Izanagi, obtained Hashirama’s cells, and used Ayekashi against him. Hashirama died three months afterward 224 293.
Severely injured, Madara grafted the cells onto his wounds and spent years waiting for the Rinnegan to awaken. Already near death when it did, he secretly transplanted his eyes into the young Nagato and recruited Obito to execute the plan. He states that he did not know Obito would later help Itachi massacre the Uchiha 224.
Return Through the Black Cursed Seal
Black Zetsu concealed Madara’s remains after his death. Later, taking inspiration from Orochimaru’s White Cursed Seal, Zetsu developed a Black Cursed Seal for Naruto. Madara’s consciousness within it became unexpectedly powerful and seized control before Naruto could awaken 100 140 311.
Zetsu presented the possession as a necessary substitute for conventional revival, citing Nagato’s inability to use Rinne Rebirth and Sasuke’s growing strength. Madara demanded submission from Zetsu, subdued Kurama, and immediately sought a worthy opponent. Zetsu concealed Sasuke’s nearby presence and directed him toward Kirigakure instead 140.
Madara attacked the Five Kage Summit, but Jiraiya prevented the confrontation from becoming a tragedy. After recovering from Jiraiya’s Toad Confrontation Chant, Madara treated the setback as encouragement and mastered Perfect Sage Mode 144 152 153.
Paradise Island Battles
Kabuto’s false report about possessing the other half of the Nine-Tails drew Madara toward Paradise Island. There he overwhelmed Cloud shinobi and fought Killer B, combining Susanoo, senjutsu, cursed power, and Kurama’s chakra. He nearly separated Gyūki from B, but Samehada concealed its chakra and rescued B underwater 153 155 158 163.
Madara then reverse-engineered Naruto’s Eight Trigrams Seal and fought Kurama alongside the chakra remnants of Minato and Kushina. He secured the Nine-Tails’ power, but Minato permanently bound 30% of the Black Cursed Seal to Naruto, limiting Madara’s future development 159 160 162.
Kabuto subsequently confronted him with Blade Reversal and Ryūchi Cave senjutsu. Near defeat, Madara awakened Perfect Susanoo. Kabuto nevertheless demonstrated a prepared spatial-cutting formation capable of shredding that defense, then arranged a duel with Itachi under a condition that Madara leave the Five Great Shinobi Villages unharmed until it ended 165 166.
Itachi, Izuna, and the Attack on Konoha
Madara reunited with the reanimated Izuna while waiting for Itachi. Their affectionate reunion was tempered by Madara’s grief at his brother’s cold, resurrected body and anger over Izuna’s defeat by Sasuke 182.
Against Itachi, Madara adapted to Kotoamatsukami by covering his eyes and relying on Sage perception. Itachi’s Blood Rahma manifestation nevertheless caught him in Tsukuyomi, inflicting what felt like three years of Amaterasu torment. The resulting mental damage left Madara unconscious for half a month and gave Naruto’s will an opportunity to recover 183 188 190.
Madara later defeated and drained Nagato, recovered his Gunbai, and turned toward Konoha to fulfill his promise to Izuna. He attacked the village through Naruto’s body, while Black Zetsu falsely broadcast that Naruto had betrayed Konoha 209 213.
His encounter with Sasuke led to a promised battle in twenty-one days and a temporary agreement not to attack anyone else. When Izuna begged him to abandon Infinite Tsukuyomi, Madara immobilized and sealed his brother underground 222 223 224.
The Tenth Battle
Asura warned Madara that Black Zetsu was not his own will and that Infinite Tsukuyomi could not bring happiness. Madara subsequently challenged Zetsu about the stone tablet and apparently burned him into black mist, but retained his commitment to the plan 225 226.
At the Valley of the End, Madara offered Sasuke equal authority over the Eye of the Moon Plan and half the revived Ten-Tails’ power. His offer combined strategic reasoning with an unusually personal admission that he did not want Sasuke as an enemy 244.
During their battle, Madara reread the stone tablet and discovered that the Infinite Tsukuyomi passages had disappeared. He recognized Black Zetsu’s manipulation, yet rationalized continuing because the plan still served his own goal 250.
Sasuke defeated him. Madara accepted Sasuke’s judgment but refused to abandon his beliefs. Obito interrupted Sasuke’s attempt to erase Madara’s will by trying to extract the Nine-Tails. After that threat receded, Madara acknowledged the strength of Sasuke’s freely loyal companions and asked him to release Izuna’s soul to the Pure Land. Black Zetsu then reappeared and took control of him 256 258.
Naruto eventually regained control of his consciousness after the shift in strength caused by Sasuke’s victory 311.
Renewed Manifestation and the Mutated Ten-Tails
Much later, Sasuke deliberately pushed Naruto into desperation to draw out Madara’s remaining will for removal. Madara re-emerged, claimed full bodily control, and declared Naruto worthy of coexisting with him 458 459.
Knowing Infinite Tsukuyomi had been a deception, he resolved to make it genuine salvation by severing the causal link between the dream and its victims’ transformation into White Zetsu. He deployed more than ten thousand shadow clones to delay Sasuke while the mutated Ten-Tails completed its revival 459.
Madara overpowered Black Zetsu but briefly accepted his proposed method for mastering the Ten-Tails gradually. He later absorbed an arm Sasuke severed from the beast, gained a new Six Paths form, and sealed Zetsu inside Iron Coffin Mountain 460 463.
After witnessing Sasuke and Obito suppress the Ten-Tails, Madara concluded he could not defeat them and chose retreat. Before he could leave, the beast’s power inside him activated: a Rinne Sharingan and a small fanged mouth appeared on his cheek, revealing Yachihoko 478.
Appearance
Madara’s documented active appearances largely use Naruto’s body, altered by the Black Cursed Seal and successive chakra transformations 140 459.
- Initial possession: Half of Naruto’s hair becomes black, along with one eye 140.
- Sage Cursed Fox Mode: Mangekyō pupils change into cross-shaped pupils; fox chakra can be reinforced with Susanoo armor 157 158.
- Combined battle cloak: A golden Nine-Tails cloak becomes crimson when synchronized with Vortex power, surrounded by ribbon-like black Curse Mist 247.
- Later manifestation: Hair and both Rinnegan turn completely black. Vapor clusters surround his divine robe, black vapor rings encircle his neck, and black clouds gather beneath his feet 459.
- Yachihoko activation: A Rinne Sharingan and small fanged mouth emerge on his cheek 478.
Personality
Madara is intensely battle-hungry, treating formidable resistance as a source of pleasure rather than discouragement. He welcomes Jiraiya’s senjutsu, praises Kabuto’s strength, and becomes exhilarated by Sasuke’s innovations. He even allows Guy to carry the injured Kakashi away because fighting an encumbered opponent would spoil the contest 149 165 213 247.
His pride does not prevent tactical caution. He avoids Itachi’s gaze, uses hidden clones to restore senjutsu, and later chooses to absorb only part of the Ten-Tails. When Sasuke and Obito clearly outclass him, he attempts retreat rather than a hopeless confrontation 183 187 463 478.
His deepest rigidity concerns his identity as a savior. He views conventional morality as something defined by the victor and believes the world’s contradictions can only be ended through imposed dreams. Even direct proof that Black Zetsu falsified the stone tablet cannot initially make him abandon Infinite Tsukuyomi 159 224 250.
Madara’s love for Izuna exposes a tenderness absent from most of his interactions. Nevertheless, he chooses his mission over his brother’s plea and seals him away. His attachment to Sasuke also unsettles his usual isolation: after defeat, he recognizes that Sasuke’s willing companions provide a strength his own approach lacks 182 224 244 258.
Abilities & Skills
Black Cursed Seal and Possession
Madara’s consciousness survives inside the seal as an external power capable of dominating Naruto’s body 140 152.
- Emotion-driven release: Strong emotion can force additional power to emerge even when the body cannot withstand it 152.
- Host growth: Unlike the White Cursed Seal, its released power stimulates the host’s own accelerated growth rather than simply becoming absorbed power 152.
- Control struggle: Damage to Madara’s will allows Naruto’s consciousness to recover; the two repeatedly contend for dominance 190 311.
- State Four restriction: True Rinnegan requires the seal’s complete power and destruction of Madara’s original physical eyes. Absorbing additional chakra does not replace the missing 30% 162 260.
- Later coexistence claim: On returning, Madara acknowledges Naruto as qualified to coexist with him, despite asserting complete bodily control 459.
Sharingan and Dōjutsu
Madara uses ocular perception for combat analysis, genjutsu, tailed-beast control, and the study of sealing formulas 140 155 159.
- Mangekyō genjutsu: Overwhelms Omoi, Karui, and C, leaving Samui conscious but helpless 155.
- Reflection: Turns Kabuto’s Blade Reversal against him and splits his body in two 165.
- Izanagi: Enables survival after defeat at the Valley of the End 224.
- Ayekashi: Uses the lifespan-sacrificing death curse inherited through Izuna’s ocular power against Hashirama 172 224 293.
- Historical ocular inheritance: His Rinnegan conceals Eternal Mangekyō power, including Ohototono Earth God and abilities originating from both brothers’ Mangekyō 468.
Susanoo
Madara progresses from smaller manifestations to Perfect/Complete Body Susanoo, using it for defense, sword attacks, flight, and combination with other chakra forms 156 165 250.
- Concealed deployment: Manifests Susanoo underground to impale Killer B unexpectedly 156.
- Yasaka Magatama and Fourfold Slash: Provides powerful ranged attacks 156 183.
- Destructive reach: Perfect Susanoo splits an island and carves a trench through the sea 166.
- Combined armor: Reinforces fox chakra tails with Susanoo 158.
- Sword Slash • Sage Wave Wind Festival: Charges Sahibochi with natural energy for a vast destructive slash 250 251.
- Counters: Kabuto’s prepared Blade Reversal web shreds it; Itachi’s Totsuka Blade seals a manifestation into its gourd 166 183.
Sage Mode and Natural Energy
Madara masters Perfect Sage Mode through Naruto’s body and develops increasingly refined attacks based on Mount Myōboku’s control of natural energy 153 250.
- Frog Sniper Fist: Delivers invisible natural-energy strikes against opponents including Killer B, Gyūki, Kushina, and Itachi 156 158 160 184.
- Shadow-clone reserves: Stationary clones gather senjutsu chakra and return it when dispersed 157 187.
- Curse Mist: Absorbs natural energy and can interfere with an opponent’s vision and natural-energy perception 183 184.
- Heart-Piercing Wound: Refines Frog Sniper Fist into an attack that penetrates a gap in Itachi’s Yata Mirror. It cannot be used without Nine-Tails chakra 184 187.
- Sage lightning: Uses Yin Release Lightning Dispatch and later Dark Curse Yin Lightning 157 241 247.
- Light Fang: A Sage Art: Storm Release beam cuts through Sasuke’s Susanoo and other large constructs 248.
- Limits: Lightning Dispatch initially exhausts his senjutsu supply; his early combined fox transformation also drains strength rapidly 157 158.
Six Paths Techniques
The Pseudo-Rinnegan supplies Six Paths abilities without all the powers of Madara’s historical true Rinnegan 162 260.
| Ability | Documented use |
|---|---|
| Preta Path | Absorbs ninjutsu, Kirin’s lightning, flames, and poisonous pollen 213 247 248. |
| Shinra Tensei | Repels attacks; Sasuke exploits its cooldown with staggered shuriken waves 248. |
| Chibaku Tensei | Makes Sasuke himself the gravity core rather than relying on a separate core 248. |
| Naraka Path | Prepares to finish the drained Nagato before Kabuto rescues him 209. |
| Asura Path | Converts an arm into machinery to prepare a senjutsu-infused Tailed Beast Bomb 248. |
| Tengai Shinsei | Used during the attack on Konoha; the village forces survive inside the Four Red Yang Formation 222. |
Tailed-Beast Control and Sealing
Madara treats tailed beasts as powers to suppress, extract, and wield 140 158.
- Kurama control: Subdues the Nine-Tails with the Sharingan and later wins control of its chakra through an internal tug-of-war 140 159 162.
- Chakra shaping: Creates chakra arms, fox tails, and Tailed Beast Bombs, including attacks launched simultaneously from ten arms 157 165.
- Suppression techniques: Southern Jambudvipa and Noblesse Oblige implant black rods in Gyūki; Black Cursed Wood adds physical restraint 158.
- Seal analysis: Copies the reverse formula of the Eight Trigrams Seal into the Black Cursed Seal to create an unlocking key 159.
- Partial Ten-Tails sealing: Uses Six Paths: Ten-Tails Coffin Seal to absorb a severed arm and gain thirteen Truth-Seeking Orbs 463.
Elemental Ninjutsu, Regeneration, and Combat
Madara combines broad ninjutsu knowledge with close-range skill and rapid analysis 155 156 160.
- Elemental coordination: Ten shadow clones launch a coordinated barrage of five elemental techniques 160.
- Fire Release: Uses large-scale fire attacks, Majestic Destroyer Flame, and Sage Art: Yasaka Dragon Flame Song 155 160 248.
- Black Rasengan: Yin Release disrupts the chakra balance of Kurama’s Tailed Beast Bomb, preventing detonation 160.
- Hashirama-cell regeneration: A transplanted White Zetsu arm heals during the fight with Killer B 153 156.
- Defensive adaptation: Stops Kabuto’s petrification from spreading by sealing his chakra points, then breaks away the stone 165.
- Later Yin Release mastery: Ultimate Yin Ghost Karma physically removes light rather than producing a darkness illusion 459.
- Space-time escape: Teleports to a kunai hidden in the sand to evade a Ten-Tails Tailed Beast Bomb 462.
Causality Severance
Itachi detects this divine technique emerging in Madara and identifies its capacity to either sever or strengthen causality 459.
- Madara intends to sever the connection between Infinite Tsukuyomi and transformation into White Zetsu 459.
- Its successful application to that objective is not documented in the provided appearances.
