Background / History
Team Minato and the Chunin Exams
Obito belongs to Team Minato alongside Kakashi Hatake and Rin Nohara. Asami Ri knows him through the circle of friends he entered through Might Guy. Rin describes Obito’s habitual lateness even before his first direct appearance 4 9.
His examination performances contrast sharply with his confidence. He struggles through the written test and relies on a note from Rin. During the team match against Guy’s squad, he chokes on hard candy while preparing the Great Fireball Technique; Guy’s kick knocks both Obito and the candy flying. In their individual match, Obito is so distracted by Rin’s cheering that Guy strikes before he takes a fighting stance, shattering his treasured goggles 10 11 15.
During Minato’s interception mission against Kumogakure, Obito provides rear security and protects Rin on concealed high ground. Afterward, he carefully splints and bandages Kakashi’s broken arm, showing a quieter concern beneath their usual bickering 19 20 24.
On the day of his Chunin promotion, Obito waits for Rin with red roses. She instead gathers their friends to organize Kakashi’s Jonin celebration. Obito drops the bouquet and forces a smile, while Rin remains unaware of his disappointment 27.
Kannabi Bridge
After Asami joins the squad and Kakashi becomes its captain, Obito participates in the mission to destroy Kannabi Bridge. An early ambush exposes his fear and Kakashi’s recklessness; Minato admonishes Obito to prove himself through actions rather than clan prestige or boasts 28 29.
Obito begins accepting Kakashi’s leadership, addressing him as “captain.” That fragile cooperation breaks down when Taiseki abducts Rin despite Obito’s attempt to protect her. Obito insists on rescuing her, rejecting Kakashi’s argument that the bridge mission must come first. Asami proposes splitting their tasks, allowing Obito to track the kidnappers while the others continue toward the bridge 30.
Kakashi subsequently returns to help him. Fighting together, Obito uses his two-tomoe Sharingan to expose Kakkō’s defenses, and Kakashi wounds the enemy. Asami arrives before Kakkō can retaliate and kills him, but a pale underground figure possesses the corpse and triggers a cave-in 31 32.
Obito pushes Kakashi clear of a falling boulder and is crushed on his right side. Believing himself beyond saving, he gives Kakashi his Sharingan as a belated Jonin promotion gift. Rin performs the transplant, while Asami secretly takes part of the eye’s chakra and a blood sample 32.
Recovery and Rin’s Survival
Obito survives and recovers in Madara’s underground refuge, his damaged body reconstructed with White Zetsu cells. He trains painfully in the hope of returning to Kakashi and Rin. Tobi undermines that hope by claiming Asami has replaced him and that his friends are happy with the new arrangement 36.
Madara engineers a crisis involving Rin and the Three-Tails to drive Obito into despair. Obito reaches the battlefield just as an outside force makes Rin leap into Kakashi’s Chidori. Believing Kakashi has killed her, he awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan; the transplanted eye in Kakashi evolves simultaneously 36 41.
Asami’s declaration that Rin can still be saved interrupts Obito’s despair. Remaining concealed, Obito shares Kakashi’s vision and adds his eye power to Kakashi’s attempt to control the Three-Tails. Together they redirect the beast’s chakra toward Rin’s wounded heart, enabling Asami to repair it 41 42.
Obito then kills the surrounding Anbu and confirms that Rin is alive, but leaves without identifying himself. He believes Asami is a better teammate and regards his own reconstructed body and presumed death as reasons he would only burden his friends 42.
Becoming “Madara Uchiha”
Obito travels through the shinobi world and witnesses warfare, displaced civilians, and betrayal. Madara uses White Zetsu to shape what he sees through half-truths, reinforcing his belief that reality offers no lasting happiness 50.
Returning to the cave, Obito commits to the Eye of the Moon plan: a dream world where everyone’s wishes can be fulfilled, including Rin’s. Madara transfers his knowledge and White Zetsu network to him, orders him to assume the name “Madara Uchiha” until his resurrection, and dies after disconnecting from the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 50.
Under his new identity, Obito secretly observes Minato and Kushina’s wedding through a spatial rift. He focuses on Rin and dismisses the celebration as “false peace” before disappearing 50.
Appearance
- Early appearance: Untidy short hair and treasured goggles worn on his forehead; Guy’s examination kick shatters the goggles 10 15.
- Reconstructed body: A pale right hand and a right side rebuilt from White Zetsu cells, initially stiff during rehabilitation 36 42.
- Masked appearance: White spiral-patterned armor and a spiral mask with an opening exposing his remaining Mangekyō Sharingan 41 42.
- Later growth: White Zetsu tissue causes him to grow considerably taller before he adopts Madara’s identity 50.
Personality
Obito initially combines exuberance with disorganization. He boasts about becoming a Chunin, arrives late with explanations about helping others, and becomes easily distracted by Rin. His difficulty with written questions and public combat mishaps contrast with Kakashi’s discipline 9 10 15 18.
His loyalty is more substantial than his bravado. He treats Kakashi’s injuries with exceptional care, refuses to abandon Rin, and instinctively sacrifices himself to save Kakashi. His condemnation of abandoning comrades becomes a lasting influence on Kakashi’s choices 24 30 32 38.
After his reconstruction, affection becomes entangled with insecurity. Tobi’s suggestion that he has been replaced makes him anxious, and Asami’s success in saving Rin deepens his belief that he is inferior and unwanted—even though he has a chance to reunite with his friends 36 42.
By the time he accepts Madara’s name, Obito speaks coldly and regards war, loss, and broken promises as proof that reality is hopeless. His attachment to Rin persists, but he redirects it toward the promise of an artificial world rather than returning to her 50.
