A short while later, Li Feng led Zhang San and the other two into a maze of alleys east of Everjoy Lane.
This was Green Bamboo Gang territory, and its headquarters were presumably somewhere here.
The four arrived at one of the Green Bamboo Gang's courtyards in the alleys.
The courtyard gate stood open, and several lackeys were chatting and shooting the breeze inside.
Li Feng led the three straight in and got right to the point. "Where's your boss? I have something to discuss with him. Tell him to come out and see me."
The lackeys froze. One sharp-eyed fellow looked Li Feng and the others up and down, recognized their constable uniforms, and hurriedly put on a smile. "Oh, constables! What brings you gentlemen here? Are you looking for someone or something?"
Before Li Feng could answer, Cheng Hu stepped forward, eager to prove himself to his new superior, and barked, "How dare you! What's a bottom-rung lackey like you asking so many questions for? Do you know who's standing before you? Hurry up and tell your boss to get his ass out here!"
"..."
Li Feng said nothing. Perhaps it was his imagination, but this scene felt strangely familiar.
Caught off guard, the lackey jumped at Cheng Hu's shout. He stole a glance at Li Feng, whose face remained expressionless, and studied him carefully, but still could not recognize him.
Still, with that much confidence, he was probably a regular constable or a chief constable. Either way, he was someone the lackey could not afford to offend.
All he could do was keep smiling and nodding. "Yes, yes. Please wait a moment, constables. Right away, right away..."
With that, the lackey darted into the inner room.
The inner room was wreathed in smoke and reeked of alcohol.
