Background / History

Founding and Internal Divisions

The Uchiha possess a thousand-year legacy and founded Konoha alongside the Senju. By the time Jin rises to prominence, however, their influence has declined, their reputation is poor, and their internal factions compete over the clan’s direction 14 205.

Children associated with Kagami Uchiha’s former supporters suffer discrimination after his death. Jin’s parents are denied access to core lineage techniques, and Jin himself loses survivor benefits and admission to the clan orphanage. Elder Setsuna is identified as the organizer of the schemes behind his parents’ deaths and subsequent deprivation 1 5 78.

Shisui brings this mistreatment to Fugaku, who says he was unaware of it and attributes it to the former power structure under Setsuna. Fugaku subsequently promises resources and back payments to Kagami’s former followers 6 10.

Jin’s Rise to Authority

Jin initially conceals his strength because he expects the Uchiha to be exterminated and does not want their fate to become his responsibility. Shisui’s friendship gradually draws him into helping the clan, beginning with advice on building a faction among members overlooked by both the Hawks and Doves 36 40 41.

After verifying Jin’s Mangekyō Sharingan, Fugaku grants him an elder’s seat and vote, business dividends, main-branch status for his family branch, and leadership of the Military Police Force. These privileges are presented as rights under clan rules rather than rewards for joining Fugaku’s faction 59.

Jin’s police appointment later becomes substantive rather than nominal. Fugaku relinquishes operational control, Tekka persuades hesitant radicals to support Jin, and the clan accepts Jin’s demand that sensitive orders be followed without public explanations 82 83 111.

Confrontation with Konoha’s Leadership

The police headquarters becomes the center of a confrontation after Jin detains three ANBU and destroys an attacking Root force. He argues that Root’s unofficial status makes its assault on a recognized village institution impossible to justify publicly. Hiruzen withdraws, retrieves the prisoners as supposed “spies,” and leaves Jin’s authority intact 93 95 97.

Jin then challenges the village over unpaid police funding. Hiruzen offers one billion ryō in immediate payment while reducing other departments’ budgets and requiring the police to settle village disturbances within a week 101 110.

The dispute escalates when Jin proposes anti-monopoly laws and public financial disclosure. These measures win support among ordinary villagers and shinobi but threaten the economic interests of Konoha’s ruling clans. The leadership secretly prepares an attack, prompting Jin to disperse Uchiha jonin near rival compounds and threaten retaliation against their families and promising young ninja 112 113 115 116.

Alliance-Building and the Faction Purge

Shibi Aburame seeks Uchiha protection after concluding that Hiruzen will not protect his clan from Danzō. Jin accepts the alliance, offering security and access to the Uchiha trading caravan while requiring allies to follow the Uchiha’s lead 123.

The clan’s network expands to include the Inuzuka and Gekko. Might Duy and Might Guy also move into the compound, where Jin intends to support their training and develop taijutsu as an alternative path for Uchiha children who cannot mold chakra 183 188.

Shisui’s apparent rebellion is later revealed as a plan coordinated with Jin. It gathers Jin’s opponents into one faction, allows irreconcilable enemies to be eliminated, and sends surviving dissidents to the Hokage, who must support them with village resources. Setsuna is killed, while Yashiro and the opposing faction are purged from the clan 205 225 239.

Growing Influence and the Kirigakure Investigation

After the purge, Jin’s orders can be carried out without repeated debate. The clan uses controversy surrounding Hiruzen’s proposed Five Kage Summit to publicize its position, attract civilian shinobi and smaller clans, and improve its reputation without directly insulting the Hokage 239.

Reports that the Sharingan controlled the deceased Fourth Mizukage, Yagura, create a new diplomatic danger. Jin proposes a joint Konoha–Kirigakure investigation rather than allowing the Uchiha to remain merely the accused party. Kirigakure accepts and announces that it will send a special envoy to discuss Yagura’s death 242 243.

Trusted subordinate Uchiha Tekka Oversees patrols, communicates developments, and carries out Jin’s sensitive instructions 79 108 205.
Faction organizer Shisui Uchiha Recruits overlooked members and later stages an opposition movement in cooperation with Jin 41 205.

Factions

Faction Documented leadership or membership Position
Radical / Hawk / Martial faction Setsuna; Tekka and many other members later support Jin Previously controlled the Military Police Force. Most martial members eventually leave Setsuna for Jin, leaving him with a smaller group of loyalists 82 204 205.
Moderate / Dove faction Yashiro Aligns with the Hokage’s faction and strongly opposes Jin; joins Shisui’s apparent rebellion 204.
Overlooked members Members outside the two major factions Receive small stipends and lack the advantages enjoyed by prominent factions. Jin identifies them as a recruitment base for Shisui 41.
Jin–Fugaku supporters Tekka and ninja loyal to Jin and Fugaku Defend Jin’s leadership on the basis of his strength, successful resistance to village pressure, and new alliances 204 208.

Clan Rules and Discipline

  • Mangekyō privileges: Awakening the Mangekyō entitles a member to elder status, a police position, and a share of trading profits 59 111.
  • Protection from conscription: Fugaku states that the founding agreement prevents Konoha from forcibly conscripting a clan elder 59.
  • Operational secrecy: Jin restricts explanations of sensitive orders because internal discussions could reach village leadership 83.
  • Enforcement: Fugaku publicly promises to punish members who ignore or undermine Jin’s police orders 83.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

  • The Sharingan is the clan’s characteristic ocular ability; three-tomoe users form part of its elite fighting strength 1.
  • Its exclusive secret techniques include Izanagi and Izanami, access to which can be restricted within the clan 1 14.
  • Jin argues that Sharingan development is fundamentally tied to Yin Release, but his claimed Visualization Method initially serves as a fabricated explanation for system-driven growth 56.
  • He later teaches visualization as an experiment, explicitly admitting that its effectiveness remains uncertain 84.

Mangekyō Sharingan

  • Grants exceptional ocular techniques and access to Susanoo; its power is treated as a major military deterrent 208 220.
  • Can suppress tailed beasts through genjutsu, making its users dangerous opponents for jinchūriki 183 220.
  • The clan traditionally believes ocular power is finite and that exhausting it causes blindness. Jin questions that assumption and investigates whether it can be trained 73 84.
  • Jin, Shisui, and Fugaku are confirmed Mangekyō users by the time Jin plans the faction purge 205.

Fire Release and Swordsmanship

  • The clan preserves Fire Release techniques, including the Great Fireball Technique and Great Fire Annihilation 3 16.
  • Great Fire Annihilation’s output depends heavily on the user’s strength rather than its B-rank classification alone 50.
  • Its inherited swordsmanship is described as comparable to Hatake Swordsmanship, although the clan has relatively few accomplished swordsmen 14.

Taijutsu Development

  • Jin teaches the Six Powers to Itachi and offers the style to Might Duy as a sustainable everyday alternative to the Eight Gates 84 182 183.
  • His instruction emphasizes foundational conditioning, adequate nutrition, sleep, and avoiding premature physical exhaustion 83 84.
  • Bringing Duy into the compound is intended to broaden the clan’s training options, particularly for children unable to mold chakra 188.

Holdings and Resources

Resource Documented extent
Military Police Force Official village institution managed by the Uchiha; Jin uses its legal authority to propose changes to village law 82 112.
Gambling and brewing Controls these industries across the Land of Fire 112.
Ninja-tool trade Controls half of the trade 112.
Trading caravan Provides business opportunities to clans allied with the Uchiha 123.
Elder’s business share Jin’s allotted share is valued at roughly 400–500 million ryō annually 59.
Inherited techniques and weapons Includes closely guarded Sharingan techniques, ancestral swords, and clan swordsmanship 14.
Orphanage Exists within the clan, although Jin is denied admission under Setsuna’s influence 5 78.
  • Jin’s compensation package includes basic supplies worth approximately five million ryō. The ancestral sword, swordsmanship, and forbidden ocular scrolls are additions supplied privately by Shisui, not ordinary compensation 14.
  • Wealth does not guarantee immediate cash access: Jin’s salary and dividends are paid annually, while battlefield rewards are deferred until the war ends 133.

Relationships

  • Aburame Clan — Open ally. Shibi seeks protection from Root, and Jin offers security and trading access without treating Aburame members as expendable fighters 123.
  • Inuzuka Clan — Publicly pledges support to the Uchiha and becomes part of its allied faction 188 210.
  • Gekko Clan — Expresses willingness to join and is subsequently named among the Uchiha’s allies 188 208.
  • Hyuga Clan — Cooperates during the Yagura investigation. Tokuma supports a thorough inquiry, while Aya offers help monitoring Root near the Uchiha compound 242.
  • Nara Clan — Maintains cautious, divided connections. Kazama works with Jin, Koji assists discreetly, and Shikaku advises him without committing the entire clan openly 24 151 188 242.
  • Might Duy and Might Guy — Reside in the compound under Jin’s patronage; Fugaku agrees to treat Duy as an important guest 183 188.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi and the Hokage’s faction — Principal political opponents. Their conflict involves police funding, economic reform, covert attacks, and attempted elimination of Jin 95 101 113 162.
  • Danzō and Root — Hostile force. Danzō seeks Jin’s eyes, orders attacks against the clan, and later investigates the Yagura affair for possible leverage 54 101 242.
  • Kirigakure — Former wartime enemy and prospective investigative partner concerning Yagura’s death and suspected Sharingan control 17 242 243.

Culture and Reputation

  • Pride and isolation: Clan members commonly display arrogance and rely on strength and lineage pride. Jin argues that their refusal to engage with Konoha’s political practices contributes to their isolation 108 110.
  • Poor police reputation: Before Jin’s reforms, the Police Force relies heavily on confident verdicts and clan prestige, even when evidence is inconclusive 84.
  • Internal inequality: Prominent factions enjoy advantages unavailable to sidelined members, despite the clan’s substantial inherited wealth 41.
  • Changing public image: Corroboration from civilian-born jonin and organized publicity substantially improve the clan’s standing under Jin 239.
  • Unity after the purge: Removing Yashiro, Setsuna, and their faction ends repeated internal obstruction and increases the clan’s effective strength 239.
