Jiraiya looked up. Atop one of Amegakure's steel buildings stood a man with long orange hair, the Rinnegan, and metal rods piercing his face.
"Your hair color has changed, and you look very different, but those eyes haven't changed. Nagato, are you the leader of the Akatsuki? It seems you haven't followed the right path. What happened?"
Whatever else had happened, Nagato and Konan were still Jiraiya's students. Though they had gone astray, he still felt some compassion for them. He simply couldn't understand how the three children he had once seen as a source of hope had become members of the Akatsuki.

Pain didn't answer Jiraiya's questions. He pressed his palms together and immediately used the Summoning Technique.
An enormous summoning seal appeared behind Pain, and a lobster emerged from it. As the lobster spewed foam, Jiraiya had no choice but to retreat, while the oil coating Konan was washed away.

"Konan, stand back. I'll take it from here."
Just as Pain finished speaking to Konan, a hand suddenly pierced through him from behind. A black Samurai Sword followed, cutting his head clean off.
"Lord Hokage..."
Jiraiya, who had just dodged the foam, looked up and saw Madara's faintly smiling face after he had severed Pain's head.
"What an interesting experiment. Jiraiya, there's no need to grieve. I haven't killed your student. All I destroyed was a Puppet."
As Madara spoke, he tossed Pain's corpse in front of Jiraiya. Puzzled by his words, Jiraiya examined Pain's body and realized that it should already have been dead for quite some time.
"What is going on?"
Seeing no blood flowing from Pain's headless corpse, Jiraiya
