In Konoha Year 24, the Second Kazekage, Shamon, died when his old injuries flared up. His battle with Tobirama had left him with wounds that could never heal. Over the years, he had sustained himself with the Secret Medicine unique to Sunagakure Ninja Village, but he finally could hold on no longer. He left this world still worried about Sunagakure Ninja Village.
Kazemori Masaki had known that the Second Kazekage did not have long to live, but he had never expected him to survive for more than nine years after the war. When he learned of the Second Kazekage's death, it was both surprising and expected. He was also curious about who would inherit the title of Kazekage. The Third Kazekage from the original history was already dead, and among the remaining Sunagakure ninja, only Chiyo and Ebizo met the qualifications, as far as he knew.
The outcome held no surprises. The Third Kazekage was indeed chosen from those two. Perhaps because Chiyo was too prone to letting her emotions rule her and thus unsuited to leadership, Shamon had named the famously wise Ebizo as his successor before his death.
On the day Ebizo succeeded him as the Third Kazekage, Kazemori Masaki sent someone with a letter congratulating him on becoming the leader of Sunagakure Ninja Village. He also expressed his hope that the two ninja villages could continue cooperating to uphold the shinobi world order.
Although Chiyo had not become Kazekage, her strength and the fact that her younger brother held the title effectively made her the second most influential person in Sunagakure Ninja Village. When she saw the letter, she nearly tore it to pieces, bluntly calling Kazemori Masaki a hypocrite.
Because of their past grievances, Chiyo had no affection whatsoever for Kazemori Masaki. Although Hatake Sakumo had
