Ch. 201The Dragon Vein's Reward
Plot points and events
- Queen Lina’s small neutral nation of Rōran has prospered as a stop on the growing trade route between the Lands of Fire and Wind. She wants security and peace for her people, not power.
- Konoha ninja Kazemori Masaki requests a private meeting. Lina recognizes him as an annotator of the Ninshu Classics and is reassured by his respectful, open manner.
- Masaki explains that a newly discovered record led him to Rōran and its underground Dragon Vein, a vast source of chakra. Lina confirms its existence but warns that her family’s tradition forbids exploiting it, both because it is dangerous and because Rōran cannot defend itself if others covet it.
- Masaki proposes a mutually beneficial partnership: Konoha will help protect Rōran and connect it to the village’s commercial network in exchange for access to study the Dragon Vein. Lina agrees, provided Rōran will not be drawn into war.
- Lina takes Masaki beneath the palace and activates the Dragon Vein. He absorbs some of its energy, gains a new insight into the relationship between natural energy and chakra, and stops Lina from releasing more.
- Back home, Masaki reflects on the experience and advances his sage training. Tobirama offers to test his improved strength.
Character developments and interactions
- Lina moves from cautious uncertainty to trust, judging Masaki by his courtesy, his published work, and Konoha’s reputation. She remains protective of Rōran and sets peace as the condition for cooperation.
- Masaki presents himself as respectful and cooperative, but also thinks strategically: he wants the Dragon Vein as a future energy source for chakra technology and hopes to strengthen Konoha’s position. He views partnership—not coercion—as the better way to secure both goals.
- Their conversation contrasts Masaki’s approach with Lina’s past experience of Sunagakure’s more intimidating conduct. Lina’s trust leads her to reveal Rōran’s secret and show him the Dragon Vein.
- Tobirama, briefly appearing at the end, recognizes Masaki’s progress and invites him to demonstrate it.
Significant themes
- Cooperation versus domination: Masaki argues that respectful exchange can benefit both a powerful village and a vulnerable nation.
- Power and vulnerability: The Dragon Vein could bring great advantage, but its value could also make Rōran a target.
- Peace and prosperity: Lina’s priority is her people’s safety and improving lives; Konoha’s trade and protection offer a route toward both.
- Innovation and tradition: Masaki seeks new uses for chakra and new ways for shinobi to operate, while Lina’s royal tradition cautions against exploiting the Dragon Vein.
