Background / History

Yang Yu creates his first three Giant Mantis Beasts after a day of dangerous life-energy experiments, including a failed beetle transformation that ends in an explosion. The successful beasts feed on failed specimens under his orders. He names them “Giant Mantis Beasts” because their former identity as striped black mantises no longer suits their transformed bodies 7 8.

Their source mantises come from the Five Poisons Complete shop. Yang Yu later buys ten more for 15,000 yuan, transforms five, and reserves the other five—including a female—for breeding. Although the shopkeeper warns that captive females eat their offspring, Yang Yu domesticates the breeding stock with life energy and Insectoid taming techniques, then accelerates their reproductive development 13 16 23.

Appearance

• Original form: At least 2.5 meters tall even while feeding with all eight bladed claws on the ground, with bodies extending more than three or four meters in length 7.
• Carapace: A sturdy, metallic-colored shell; their bodies are compared to alloy steel in toughness 16 35.
• Wings: Thin, cicada-like wings unfold from the back to assist gliding attacks 36.
• Enhanced form: Over four meters long and three meters tall, with gray stone armor over thicker, pitch-black carapaces and savage metallic spikes 50.
• Primary claws: The enhanced beasts carry a pair of enormous frontal mantis blade-claws, each at least half their body length 50.
• Number One: Twice the size of an ordinary beast when first identified as the king, with noticeably thicker armor and vicious spikes 41.

Behavior

The beasts combine predatory aggression with absolute obedience. Yang Yu’s life imprint makes them regard him with affection and reverence stronger than that of children toward a father; they would obey even an order to kill themselves 7.

In battle, they show no fear of injury or death, willingly trading wounds to overwhelm opponents. Their combat instincts also support coordinated action: one beast abandons pursuit of a weaker enemy to reinforce three companions fighting a Human-tier cultivator 36.

Close-Quarters Combat

• Fight with immense physical strength, bladed claws, and innate insect combat instincts 7.
• Outmatch armed Mortal-tier fighters; one beast can kill two black-clad soldiers in less than a second 35.
• Attack in teams to overwhelm equally ranked cultivators, including the hammer-wielding Zhao Tong 36.

Armor and Resilience

• Modified pistol bullets leave only faint white marks on their original carapaces 35.
• Can survive coordinated Human-tier attacks that crack their shells without immediately disabling them 35.
• Limit: Elder Xu’s Earth-tier pressure immobilizes seriously wounded members despite their continued resistance 36.
• After genetic enhancement, most can hold their own against an ordinary Earth Rank expert for a long time, but still cannot defeat one alone in an all-out fight 50.

Speed and Mobility

• Their original mantis bodies are more agile than Yang Yu at the peak of acquired Human Rank, allowing them to catch fleeing Ghost Infant Sect disciples rapidly 19.
• Use thin wings to glide several meters above the ground and deliver sudden attacks 36.
• Later enhancements improve movement speed, neural reflexes, and dynamic vision 50.

Feeding and Evolution

• Absorb refined cosmic force from consumed cultivator bodies, increasing their strength and potentially triggering a realm breakthrough 41.
• Consumption also removes corpses and obstructs investigation of Yang Yu’s battles 19 41.

Life-Imprint Communication and Deployment

• Transmit simple thoughts accurately to Yang Yu through their life imprints 15.
• Can be stored in his Life-Soul Space and released when needed. His deployment and retrieval range expands from five meters to twenty meters after soul cultivation 8 16.
• Their controllable number and strength depend on Yang Yu’s fate soul. His first soul-tempering session increases capacity from three to at least four; completion of the first score level raises it to twenty 7 11 12.
• Obey the Blade Queen’s secondary command authority when Yang Yu is unconscious; Yang Yu later formally grants Zhao Zixuan second-level authority over his war insects 41 44.

Excavation and Support Work

• Move collapsed masonry, uncover buried treasures, and carry bundled supplies 16 41.
• Construct an underground dwelling with a hall exceeding 1,000 square meters, two bedrooms, and a laboratory. They reinforce its walls with internal energy, compressing the soil into a material resembling reinforced concrete 45.
• Assist laboratory operations by gathering surviving experimental creatures and placing them into treatment vessels 48.

Genetic Enhancement

The completed enhancement formula balances five super genes rather than maximizing any single trait 49 50:

Excessive enhancement of one attribute can burden the others and create fatal weaknesses. Yang Yu repeatedly removes unsuitable combinations with life energy until he finds the optimal formula 49.

• Yang Yu — Creator and master. His life imprint establishes their absolute loyalty, while his soul strength determines the size of the force he can command 7 8.
• Zhao Zixuan / Blade Queen — Secondary commander. Directs the beasts during Yang Yu’s incapacitation and later receives formal second-level command authority 41 44.
• Giant Mantis King Number One — Mutated king and leader of the squad. Coordinates wilderness operations and becomes Yang Yu’s principal genetic test subject because of his exceptionally robust body 41 45 49.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Immortal Spirit Ghost Market

Three beasts scout the distorted alley in a triangular formation more than a hundred meters ahead of Yang Yu. At the ruined market, they excavate buried valuables; five newly created beasts join them and accelerate the work 15 16.

Ghost Infant Sect Conflict

Eight beasts pursue Li Dahai and another fleeing disciple, then devour the bodies. During the later assault on Yang Yu’s residence, a twenty-beast squad reverses the enemy ambush: fifteen engage the Human-tier cultivators while five hunt the remaining soldiers 19 35.

After Yang Yu’s clash with Elder Xu leaves him unconscious in a lake, the beasts rush to rescue him. They subsequently consume the fallen cultivators, carry the recovered spoils, and help evacuate him; Number One is entrusted with his protection 39 41.

Wilderness Preparation

The beasts clear the area around Yang Yu’s reserve hideout and build his concealed underground base. During the ensuing months, they serve as genetic test subjects and grow into a 500-member enhanced army prepared for the return to Shangjing City. Yang Yu also plans to assign additional beasts and Number One to protect Zhao Zixuan 45 49 50.
