Ning Shile hadn't expected Han Jin to turn and run. He froze for a moment, then hurried after him.
[Huh???]
[What's he doing?]
Zheng Ye turned at the sound and immediately spotted a bewildered Ning Shile.
Confused, but still capable of running.
"President Zheng!" Han Jin called as he strode over.
Ning Shile slammed on the brakes and nearly fell. His momentum sent him stumbling a few steps before he hurried behind a pillar.
Zheng Ye slowly shifted his gaze to Han Jin. "What is it?"
Han Jin chuckled. "The one you mentioned just now really won!"
Zheng Ye gave an indifferent hum.
"I want to bet more on the next race." Han Jin glanced at Zheng Ye, seemingly embarrassed, but spoke anyway. "It's just that I don't have that much on hand right now. Could you lend me some? I'll pay you back with interest!"
[...What??]
Ning Shile was stunned.
[He's actually borrowing money! What happened to the promise he made Bai Qiongyu earlier? How long has it even been?]
[Just as I thought! Trust anything but a man!...Wait, aren't I a man too?]
Ning Shile clicked his tongue. [Damn it! Revoke his man card!]
Listening to Ning Shile's complaints, Zheng Ye found them amusing. He looked up at Ning Shile behind the pillar.
Ning Shile stood sideways on tiptoe, hiding so carefully that only a small tuft of hair at the back of his head showed.
That little tuft swayed with its owner's movements. Zheng Ye could even picture the indignant expression on Ning Shile's face behind the pillar.
Cute.
Zheng Ye's lips curved. "Sure."
"Really?" Delighted, Han Jin hurriedly took out his phone and opened the link, looking eagerly at Zheng Ye. "This is my account. You can deposit it straight in."
"This time, twenty-eighty." Zheng Ye spoke flatly, without so much as a flicker of his eyelids.
"Sure!" Han Jin agreed readily. "When we win this race, you get eighty! I get twenty!"
Zheng Ye hummed and glanced at his phone screen. "I'll have someone make the deposit."
"Great, great." Han Jin nodded repeatedly. "I'll leave you to it, then. Thank you, President Zheng!"
Han Jin had it all worked out. The stake was Zheng Ye's this time, so even if he lost, it would be Zheng Ye's money.
With the money deposited straight into an online account, Zheng Ye couldn't even go to the police.
Was he going to tell the police it was for gambling? Of course not. Even if Han Jin refused to pay him back, Zheng Ye would have to swallow the loss in silence.
If he won, it would be free money. Even after paying Zheng Ye back with interest, he would still pocket twenty percent. Why wouldn't he do it?
As he was thinking, his phone vibrated.
The deposit had arrived!
Without even checking, Han Jin bet his entire account balance! He didn't leave a single cent!
The event was drawing to a close. Most of the guests had left, and those who remained were mostly close relatives.
Han's parents came out of the dining room.
They hadn't known their son gambled and had been shocked to find out during the wedding. Fortunately, Bai Qiongyu hadn't rejected their son. Otherwise, how long would it take to repay such an enormous sum?
Han's mother exchanged a look with his father, then drew Bai Qiongyu over. "Dear, we're truly sorry about what Han Jin did to you."
Bai Qiongyu shook her head. "It's fine, as long as he stops gambling from now on."
"Mm." Han's mother paused, then ventured, "Then, do you think you could bring back the bride price our family gave you?"
Bai Qiongyu thought she must have misheard. She frowned. "What did you say?"
"Bring back the bride price," Han's mother repeated.
Bai Qiongyu couldn't believe Han's mother had actually said that. Return the bride price too? What on earth was she thinking?
She forced herself not to curse and merely asked, "Didn't my family already provide a dowry?"
"Yes, a dowry is what you bring with you when you marry into our family." Han's mother took Bai Qiongyu's hand. "But the bride price was given to you. Isn't it only reasonable for you to bring it back?"
Bai Qiongyu was so angry she almost laughed.
So she had to provide a dowry and return the bride price? What kind of logic was that?
"Auntie." No longer in the mood to keep up a polite front, Bai Qiongyu pulled her hand away. "My family isn't short of money. The bride price was just for good luck, so we only asked for eighty-eight thousand. You want even that eighty-eight thousand back?"
She sneered. "Then are you planning to pay off the thirty million your son owes?"
Bai Qiongyu finally understood. Love was the most useless thing of all. For Han Jin, she had fallen out with her parents and resigned from the Bai Corporation. She had thrown away a bright future and her family, insisting on marrying beneath her.
She had thought the Han family would cherish her. Instead, with no one left to back her up, they only pushed their luck!
"Just look at you." Han's mother's expression changed instantly. She had been the one to make an unreasonable demand, yet now she acted like the victim. Frowning, she scolded, "I was only asking. Do you have to be so rude?"
"Rude?" Bai Qiongyu had never seen anyone twist the blame around like this. "How was I rude?"
"You don't call that tone rude?" Han's mother said. "Whatever else, I'm your mother-in-law!"
"Bai Qiongyu." Hearing them, Han's father approached with a stern face and loudly rebuked her. "You've only just joined this family, and this is how you speak to your mother-in-law?"
"No, how did I speak to her?" Bai Qiongyu couldn't understand.
Had she said a single offensive word?
"The wedding is over. You'll follow the rules of the Han family now!" Han's father was blunt, not even giving Bai Qiongyu a chance to argue. He ordered, "Bring the bride-price money back tonight!"
Ning Shile almost laughed in anger when he heard that.
[A whole family of lunatics. Not much of a family business, but plenty of family rules.]
Then he looked at Bai Qiongyu beside him. [Your sister's being bullied like this. Aren't you going to help?]
Bai Qiongyu stood motionless beside Ning Shile.
It wasn't that he didn't want to help. He couldn't. Only by letting his sister see the Han family's true colors would she come to her senses.
Seeing what was happening, Han Jin finally tore himself away from his phone and walked over. "What's wrong?"
Bai Qiongyu was about to explain when Han's father snapped, "It's all because of this wonderful daughter-in-law you found us! The wedding's barely over, and she's already talking back to your mother!"
"What?" Bai Qiongyu hurriedly grabbed Han Jin and shook her head repeatedly. "I didn't!"
Han Jin patted Bai Qiongyu's hand as if to soothe her.
Bai Qiongyu calmed down a little. At least Han Jin believed her. Otherwise, she really would have been angry.
But then Han Jin said, "Just apologize to my mom."
"No." Bai Qiongyu looked at Han Jin, a little angry. "I told you I didn't do it. Why should I apologize for something I didn't do?"
"Why are you making such a big deal out of this?" Han Jin didn't understand why Bai Qiongyu was so angry. "It's just an apology. Wouldn't it be better to let it go?"
The impatience on his face was already obvious. The wedding was over, their marriage was registered, and he had even confessed to the online gambling. At this point, he couldn't be bothered to cater to this rich young lady anymore. Han Jin didn't believe Bai Qiongyu would leave him over this.
Bzzz—
His phone vibrated.
Han Jin opened it. The second race had already begun.
Unlike the previous race, Number Eight had taken the lead this time, pulling dozens of meters ahead of the other horses right from the start!
A sure win!
Han Jin couldn't stop the corners of his mouth from lifting, and he clenched his fist hard.
Before you continue
