Ch. 101New Material
Plot points and events
- Tao Ying enthusiastically recommends romantic storybooks to Ji Anxian, including tales about divine healers, and embarrasses her son, Mao Zhonglin, by revealing his childhood taste for stories about scholars and fox spirits. Ji and Jiang Nuan find the exchange entertaining.
- After visiting the General’s Residence, Jiang Nuan and Yun Shining decide to go to a teahouse the next day to hear a storyteller. An Yan can join them, but the others are occupied; Jiang Yehua must rest, and Jiang Zixuan is sewing her wedding dress.
- An Yan’s absent “husband” at the shop privately sulks about being left behind, but is quickly appeased when she returns with ingredients to cook him a special meal.
- The following day, Jiang Nuan and her companions find the teahouse crowded with scholars preparing for the Spring Examination. A storyteller is performing one of Jiang Nuan’s melodramatic romances, which has helped draw customers.
- Guagua points out two examination candidates, Wu Hongcai and Shi Yongfu, as new story material. It reveals that although the men appear close, Shi secretly resents Wu. The disclosure unsettles Wu, who wonders whether he alone can hear it.
Character developments and interactions
- Tao Ying comes across as playful, candid, and unusually easy for Ji Anxian to get along with; Ji’s initial concern about her is replaced by amusement and approval. Mao Zhonglin is embarrassed by his mother’s openness.
- Yun Shining’s enjoyment of Jiang Nuan’s gossip makes her eager to accompany her everywhere.
- An Yan’s caring gesture toward the sulking man quickly resolves his imagined grievance.
- Wu Hongcai is shown as cautious and perceptive, while Shi Yongfu masks his resentment with the outward manner of a close friend. Jiang Nuan tries to infer the source of that resentment.
Significant themes
- Appearances versus reality: Shi and Wu seem like brothers, but their relationship conceals envy.
- Jealousy and comparison: Wu’s prodigious talent has long overshadowed Shi, creating the conditions for resentment—though Guagua stresses that Shi has not yet acted against him.
- Storytelling and entertainment: Jiang Nuan’s fiction has become popular enough to improve teahouse business, and everyday gossip offers her fresh material.
- Affection and humor: Family teasing, friendly companionship, and small acts of care shape the chapter’s lighter scenes.
