Background / History
The sect’s search for evolution
Ning Fengzhi spends his life searching for a way to evolve the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Pagoda. Sect records describe it as a degraded form of the Nine Treasure Glazed Tile Pagoda, making restoration a longstanding goal for the sect’s direct descendants. Ning Rongrong’s exceptional talent makes her its most promising candidate 19 22 25.
After Rongrong reports that Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass has evolved into the Blue Silver King, Ning Fengzhi travels to Suotuo City with Bone Douluo Gu Rong. He questions his daughter, discovers that she offended Tang San’s teacher, Li Sen, and independently verifies the reports. Although he prefers a transaction, he initially considers force an acceptable fallback 22.
Confrontation with Tang San and Tang Hao
Ning Fengzhi approaches Tang San with an apology for Rongrong’s behavior and an offer to discuss business. When Tang San refuses to summon his absent teacher, Ning signals Gu Rong to test him with soul-power pressure. Gu Rong escalates the pressure until Tang San coughs blood, prompting Tang Hao to intervene 23.
Recognizing Tang Hao and the danger of antagonizing both him and Li Sen, Ning Fengzhi abandons coercion. He pays Tang San ten million Gold Soul Coins and promises that Rongrong will apologize to Tang San and his teacher 23 24.
Agreement with Li Sen
Ning Fengzhi brings Rongrong to apologize and offers one hundred million Gold Soul Coins, together with additional concessions, for the evolution theory or direct assistance. Negotiations stall when Tang San reveals Gu Rong’s attack. Ning then offers to leave Rongrong in Li Sen’s custody, despite her frightened objections 25.
Li Sen sets three further conditions, which Ning Fengzhi accepts 26:
- Accountability: Gu Rong must fight Li Sen for attacking Tang San.
- Restricted use: The evolution method may be used by Ning Fengzhi and his family, but not passed to outsiders.
- Academy support: The sect must provide money and manpower for Li Sen’s planned academy.
Gu Rong returns severely injured and estimates that recovery will take six months. His account convinces Ning Fengzhi that Li Sen is too dangerous to challenge safely. Ning nevertheless maintains the agreement, placing the sect’s prospects above Rongrong’s welfare 26 27.
Learning the method
During their next meeting, Ning Fengzhi learns that evolution requires strengthening a martial soul’s origin. His own rank and the Pagoda’s quality make the necessary resources exceptionally difficult to obtain. Realizing that Rongrong remains the sect’s best prospect, he regrets having surrendered her and begs for her return 28.
Li Sen refuses to return Rongrong, but promises to help her evolve and provide access to an Aromatic Silk Beauty for Ning Fengzhi. Ning accepts the compromise 28.
Academy investment in Heaven Dou City
Sword Douluo Jian Chenxin attacks Li Sen after seeing Rongrong’s condition. Ning Fengzhi tries to stop him and privately explain the arrangement, but Li Sen publicly holds Ning responsible for offering his daughter in the original bargain. Ning apologizes and confirms that academy funding and a construction crew are ready 39 40.
Rongrong then delivers a jade box containing the promised Aromatic Silk Beauty. After Li Sen’s duel with Jian Chenxin, Ning Fengzhi agrees to supply one Soul Douluo and four Soul Saints for the academy and mobilize the sect to locate hundred-thousand-year Thunder Dragon-type soul beasts 40 42.
Appearance
Ning Fengzhi is introduced as a middle-aged man. His noble bearing and composed speech later serve as Li Sen’s point of comparison when assessing Xue Qinghe 22 44.
- Usually maintains a kindly smile during negotiations, even when publicly rebuffed 23.
- Loses that composure when the sect’s evolution prospects appear hopeless, becoming pale and nearly collapsing 28.
Personality
Ning Fengzhi is a practiced negotiator who uses apologies, wealth, and personal rapport to create openings. His polite manner does not exclude coercion: he authorizes Gu Rong’s pressure test and initially believes the sect can seize the evolution method if negotiations fail 22 23 25.
The sect’s future consistently takes precedence over his affection for Rongrong. He acknowledges that her suffering pains him, yet refuses to withdraw from the bargain. His desperation becomes especially pronounced when he believes he has given away the sect’s only realistic chance of producing an evolved Pagoda 24 27 28.
He is also cautious about personal security. He normally travels with either Sword Douluo or Bone Douluo and keeps a Titled Douluo at the sect headquarters. Being left alone while Jian Chenxin fights Li Sen makes him anxious about assassination or theft 40 42.
Abilities & Skills
Support cultivation
- Ning Fengzhi is a rank-79 support Soul Master with the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Pagoda 28 40.
- He estimates that his support, combined with the sect’s two level-95 Douluos, would allow them to contend with a level-98 Super Douluo 22.
- His martial soul prevents him from obtaining another soul ring at his current rank; evolution is therefore essential to further advancement 28.
- He considers himself vulnerable without a powerful escort rather than a capable independent combatant 40 42.
Diplomacy and resource mobilization
- Uses the sect’s wealth to offer compensation, purchase cooperation, and fund institutional projects 24 25 40.
- Commands enough personnel to commit a Soul Douluo, four Soul Saints, and a construction crew to Li Sen’s academy 40 42.
- Can mobilize the sect to search for rare soul beasts suitable for Li Sen’s second martial soul 42.
Martial-soul evolution knowledge
Li Sen teaches Ning Fengzhi four possible approaches to evolving the Pagoda 28:
| Method | Requirements or limitations |
|---|---|
| Compatible soul rings | Treasure-seeking soul beasts with a strong metal attribute; sufficiently old rings provide greater assistance 28. |
| Compatible soul bones | Bones from those same types of beasts must contain enough power to replenish the martial soul’s origin 28. |
| Heavenly treasures | An appropriate immortal herb, such as Aromatic Silk Beauty, can provide the necessary origin power 28. |
| Divine intervention | A god can alter the rules governing the martial soul 28. |
For Ning Fengzhi specifically, Li Sen estimates that evolution requires Aromatic Silk Beauty or two highly compatible hundred-thousand-year soul bones. Ning later receives the herb, but the supplied chapters do not document his absorption of it or a resulting breakthrough 28 40 42.
Equipment / Items
- Aromatic Silk Beauty — Immortal herb supplied by Li Sen to fulfill his promise of helping Ning Fengzhi evolve his martial soul 35 40.
- Jade box — Container delivered by Rongrong for the promised herb 40.
- Storage soul tool — Holds the jade box while Ning waits for Li Sen and Jian Chenxin to return from their duel 42.
Relationships
- Ning Rongrong — Daughter and the sect’s strongest evolution prospect. He disciplines her for jeopardizing negotiations, then leaves her with Li Sen despite her pleas to return home 22 24 28.
- Gu Rong / Bone Douluo — Senior sect protector, addressed as “Uncle Bone.” Ning relies on his escort and combat strength, but overrules his objections concerning Rongrong 22 24 27.
- Jian Chenxin / Sword Douluo — Senior protector, addressed as “Uncle Jian.” Ning withholds Rongrong’s arrangement from him, contributing to his attack on Li Sen 39.
- Li Sen — Initially a target for negotiation or coercion; later an evolution adviser and academy investment partner whose strength forces Ning to respect his terms 22 26 28 42.
- Tang San — Recipient of Ning’s apology and compensation. Gu Rong’s attack leaves Tang San distrustful of Ning even after payment 23 24 25.
- Tang Hao — Forces Ning to abandon intimidation and settle the attack on Tang San through compensation 23 24.
- Xue Qinghe — Crown prince and disciple. Their connection gives the Heaven Dou Imperial Family access to the sect’s Titled Douluo backing 50.
