Background / History

Zhao Wuji previously earned a widespread reputation as the Immovable Wisdom King. Snake Granny Chao Tianxiang recognizes that title when they meet in the Star Dou Great Forest. By then, he teaches at Shrek Academy and accompanies its students to hunt soul rings 25.

At Shrek, he exercises authority when Flender is absent, setting the final entrance assessment himself despite Dai Mubai’s concern about its difficulty 10.

Appearance

Zhao Wuji is blunt, easily irritated, and confident in his authority. He initially treats Lin Ye’s challenge as boastful recklessness, but recognizes the boy’s exceptional talent after seeing his cultivation and soul rings. He participates in the staff decision to grant Lin Ye special admission, showing that he can acknowledge ability despite personal friction 10 14.

He values academy unity more than individual objections to the group’s conduct. After the Canghui Academy confrontation, he insists that Shrek students should fight together even if their own side started the dispute. Lin Ye’s refusal to accept that reasoning leaves him frustrated and judging the boy selfish 23.

His protectiveness is genuine in dangerous situations. Against the Titan Giant Ape, he places himself between the beast and his students and tells them to flee without him. After Xiao Wu is taken, he openly blames himself for failing to protect her 28 29.

His resentment toward Lin Ye nevertheless escalates into violence. During the dispute over Yu Xiaogang’s theories, he demands submission, applies Soul Saint pressure to Lin Ye and his companions, and attacks Lin Ye’s head with his bear claws 33.

Shrek Entrance Assessment

Zhao sets a teamwork test requiring applicants to withstand his attacks for one incense stick. Lin Ye instead requests an immediate challenge alongside Ning Rongrong. Their unusual cultivation and rings impress Zhao enough that he considers Lin Ye a rare talent worth nurturing 10.

With Rongrong’s support, Lin Ye unleashes seven devastating flaming sword strikes. Zhao’s defense fails, and he stops the fight by declaring Lin Ye has passed. Scorched and bald, he reduces the remaining applicants’ requirement to half an incense stick; Tang San’s group subsequently passes while he holds back considerably 11 12.

That night, Zhao considers seeking compensation for his injuries from Flender. Tang Hao interrupts him and proposes a “spar,” reducing Zhao’s bluster to frightened deference 12.

Star Dou Great Forest Expedition

Zhao leads the students toward the forest to obtain Oscar’s third ring. Along the way, he defeats Ye Zhiqiu but clashes with Lin Ye over the latter’s refusal to support a fight provoked by other Shrek students 19 21 23.

In the forest, he captures Oscar’s prospective ring beast and negotiates its disputed ownership with Snake Granny. After Lin Ye wins the deciding duel against Meng Yiran, Oscar absorbs the ring. Zhao then extends the expedition for Tang San’s third ring and Lin Ye’s fourth 24 25 26 27.

When the Titan Giant Ape appears, Zhao first attempts a respectful withdrawal. Mistaking its reach toward Xiao Wu for an attack, he strikes and provokes it. The beast overpowers him and carries her away. Unable to catch it, he later authorizes Lin Ye to follow Tang San, who has departed alone in pursuit 28 29.

Confrontation at Shrek

After the expedition, Zhao is present when Yu Xiaogang challenges the authenticity of Lin Ye’s ten-thousand-year fourth ring. As the argument escalates, Zhao’s accumulated grievances erupt: he demands apologies to himself, Flender, Yu Xiaogang, and the academy, then attempts to strike Lin Ye’s head 32 33.

Lin Ye answers by releasing his fourth divine seal and summoning Taixu Sword God over Shrek. The confrontation leads directly into the attack that destroys the academy 33 34.
